Hello Donna, It would be nice to know that too. However, here’s what I did that worked but I don’t know exactly how it worked.
Go mail prefs, view and tick classic view. Go to system prefs, accessibility options and enable mouse keys. You should be able to press option quickly 5 times. That later method doesn’t work on my Yosemite system. Now VO right arrow or left arrow, until you hear “Horizontal splitter“. Press VO command F5. Now attempt to click on that horizontal splitter. Using the keyboard, trackpad, cursing it and nearly beating up the machine I could not drag and drop the thing. I really don’t know what I tried and it seemed nothing worked . Now go back to mail prefs and take the classic view tick out of the checkbox. Upon closing mail prefs, the pest had vanished. How where, why and when it was triggered I don’t know.
