Here it happens on my iMac in Mountain Lion with an older Skype version as

Re: Compatible Scanning Alternative

2012-09-06 Thread Emilio
Hello,

First, this may be somewhat lengthy because I want to be thorough in
my explanation so as to minimize confusion. Furthermore, know this is
my limited experience after using the Scan Snap software and scanner
after only one day. With this said, my experience so far has been
wonderful. This is not predicated on the excellent reviews I have
investigated, nor is it hinged on the desire for efficiency; however,
these factors are highly attractive incentives.

Upon opening the box, I was amazed at the compact size of the actual
scanner. (Roughly estimated, the actual size is about 3 inches high
and 9 inches long; enough to accomodate a standard length of paper).
The box contains several cords and adaptors. One is a power cord that
is optional, and two are a USB cables. One USB cable is used to power
the scanner, while the second USB cable is necessary regardless of
either power supply option because it is what the scaner uses to
receive data. Once I read the manual (relevant portions only), I got
started scanning.

Scanning would have taken less time, but the critical piece of the
puzzle, is the software. Unbeknownst to the user, upon launching the
software, it appears inaccessible, but have no fear. One is able to
access the menu options by pressing VO-M, and interact with the
settings, but on a minimal bases. Really once the software is
installed, the scanner is plugged into the computer, one can just
position their paper in the feed tray, insuring the top of the paper
is face down, hit the scan button on the machine, and within 7
seconds, the paper shoots out from the bottom as it is being scanned,
and a image appears on the screen, which is an exact copy of the paper
scanned. (This was verified through sighted assistance).

This is where it took some time to figure-out the unlabled buttons
because in order for the unlabled button options to appear I had to
intitiate a new scan, so this took a while, but well worth the effort.
After each new scan, I relabled the buttons, as follows, delete, file,
mail, print, drop box, and EverNote. I only labled these because these
are the only relevant buttons for me. Pressing VO-space on each button
after a new scan opens a option window where you can interact with
said option accordingly. E-mail is nice because if you just need to
send a scanned image to a sighted person, you hit the e-mail button,
and it automatically inserts the file as an attachment - leaving you
with the (laborious task) of inserting the sender and subject
information. Drop box will save the image into your drop box, and
EverNote imports the file into the EverNote application if installed.

Once you have a scanned image saved in the folder of your choice, you
need to launch ABBYY Fine Reader for Scan Snap. Internet posts
recommend placing an icon in the doc, which is what I did. Once I
select the file I want to convert, the AFR converts the file and
places it into the designated folder assigned to the original scan.
Please note this will have the same file name, but it will be followed
with "processed by fine reader). This will also continue to be a PDF,
but accessible when using Preview.

Furthermore, please know this has only been performed on simple
documents, excluding forms. My particular scanner can scan ten pages
consecutively, and are automatically loaded after reach page has
finished scanning. This is because my scanner only holds ten pages at
a time. I will scan completed forms by hand, and not convert these, as
the images wil suffice for sending to sighted individuals. I will
report back for those who are interested.

If anyone wants to walk through this on Skype to get a virtual feel
for the way I use the scanner and software so far, please add me to
Skype using this e-mail address as a point of reference.

Hope this has answered some questions for the curious. :)

Re: Caps Lock to VO keys and more

Yes, I agree! The developer is awesome, and he's very quick!
While back, I asked him to implement function+space as left mouse click
because I would need control mouse click or option mouse click. You
can't do it with voiceover because VO steals control and option key when
it simulates mouse click.

Re: Compatible Scanning Alternative

2012-09-06 Thread Emilio
Hello again,

Again, I stress this is only an alternative and for those who already
use hardware & software suited to their individual needs that is
great. Books in this case will need to be unbound because this not a
flatbed scanner. I know this may be a detraction for some, but having
this when scanning my graduate textbooks would have saved hours on the
preparation side of things. Never-the-less, I graduated, so all is
well with that.

Re: Bard download Question

2012-09-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I'm not sure but I think you can rename the folders. I found this out by
accident when I downloaded a book twice, and the Mac automatically renamed one
of them a little bit, I think with a number on the end of the folder name. I
have not had a problem downloading books by the same author, so I'm not sure
what's going on with that.

 Greetings,
One of the nice things about downloading books from the National Library
Service (NLS) on the Mac is that if you have the check box in Safari
preferences that says "open safe files after download" checked, Safari
will extract the archived files you download from NLS and place them in
their own folders. This makes it very convenient so when you want to copy
these books to a device that can read them, all you have to do is copy the
folder for each book and you're good to go.
Now, here is the problem I had. I admit from the outset that I'm weird. I
decided on September first that I wanted to download all of the Harry
Potter novels, because I could, and because I could then read them
whenever I wanted. Well, what the Mac did, was give each Bard book the
same folder name, almost. It named each folder DB-JK and DB-JK2 and so on.
So, I couldn't tell which book was which. So, I deleted the 3 books I
downloaded, and started over. This time, I downloaded one book at a time,
and renamed each folder with the correct name for each book.
Now, finally, for my question. Is there an easier way I could have
 accomplished this?
Thanks for reading this long message.

can't find anyone in contacts?

Hi all,
I suddenly can't find anyone in my contacts app. I did searches for people I

auto-fill addresses, and my iPod still has everyone in its contacts (it and the
mac sync contacts over iCloud). Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hi again all,
When creating a new email, is there a way to send it to several addresses? When

Strange Problem with Importing Audible Book

2012-09-06 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

My wife (Christine) just downloaded a book from audible, for the first time on
her new computer. On my computer this works just fine, but when she opens it in
iTunes (just by opening it in finder in the usual way), it doesn't go into the
books category under the sources sidebar. Under books, it just says "Books
introduction" but no books are listed. It's not in the music library either, as
I have searched i there. It is only found in Recently Added.
Any idea of why this is happening? I'm asking instead of her since I'm helping
her to figure this out since I've been using a Mac for longer, but I'm stumped
on this one.

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: sending an email to multiple people?

2012-09-06 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

Once the first address is completed, you should just be able to start typing
the second. Make sure it doesn't say "selected" when reading the first address,
or you will just overwrite it as you say. So if it does, then hit right arrow
so it deselects it.

I just tried it. I entered a name, it auto-filled, I arrowed to the end and
typed an email address. I tabbed away from and then back to the "to" field, and
it said it was sending only to the first person I entered. I brought up the
context menu and that first address was the only one there; the second seems to
have disappeared. I am using Mountain Lion with mail in standard view.

Thanks all, enter seems to do the trick. I don't know why others are taken to
the next field, but what if you shift-tab back to the "to" field and try typing
again? Also, are you in standard or classic view? Do you have ML or another

Re: app backups with Carbonite?

2012-09-06 Thread Chris Blouch
I don't know anything about carbonite, but the shared apps folder is a
common way to avoid storing large binary files multiple times for
multiple users. Sure you might only have one login on your box but the
architecture is designed to handle multiple users. Some people even set
up multiple accounts for projects so that stuff from one account/project
doesn't interfere with another. Assuming OSX is like most Unix OSes,
under the hood there is even shared memory for apps so if you have
Safari loaded up under on account, then switch to another account and
launch Safari, it is only loaded in memory once. This was how old unix
boxes could handle dozens or hundreds of concurrent users without
melting because each user only stored their unique data and all the app
memory was shared.

I am almost ready to switch my backup to my mac instead of windows. When I do,
I assume carbonite will back up my apps (in the applications folder). My
question, though, is: will it also back up app data? For instance, if I
restored from a carbonite backup, would my app preferences, bookmarks, and
other app-related data be restored? I'm stil not clear on how apps work on the
mac (actually, I'm still lost as to why apps are stored in a global folder
instead of in the user's home folder) so this may not even be a sensible
question. Thanks for any explanations.

Re: Safari question:

2012-09-06 Thread Chris Blouch
You can check the mail archives under my name for more details but the
short answer is that Adobe has chosen not to support using Flash with
voiceover. Flash has been problematic on all platforms but it is pretty
much unusable on OSX. Some flash widgets provide external HTML controls
such as video players but if you are being presented curriculum inside a
flash box then you're not going to get very far. Flash also fails on
most mobile devices as well and is entirely proprietary (as opposed to
web standards) so it's slowly going away, but apparently this vendor has
not noticed yet.

Drag and Drop in Mail Mailboxes

2012-09-06 Thread Timothy Hornik
Greetings,

Not sure if the following issue has been discussed, but can anyone successfully
drag and drop mailboxes onto another mailbox while in Mail?

Two things I have noticed. First, I have had no luck with either dropping the
mailbox on or after the desired mailbox. On the positive side, VO simply tells
me that the drag and drop operation was unsuccessful, so at least VO is
trying...

Secondly, whenever I attempt to drag and drop, VO immediately switches over to
the messages window after hitting the desired VO Drag and Drop keys.

2012-09-06 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
I have had a lot more luck using the "start moving item" command, you can
find it in the VO h-h command list, and then use the drop before or drop
after voiceover cursor commands, I think the VO period key tries to drop the
item on the voiceover cursor, and since there's already something there it
can't drop it there. Let me know iff this helps.

Yes, that works. But here's what threw me. I'm using Mountain Lion and when I

opening folders in finder?

2012-09-06 Thread Christina C.
Hi all,

I skipped lion and went from SL to ML. I used to be able to VO spacebar on a
folder in Finder and the folder would open and I could see it's contents. I
cannot get this to work in ML. What am I doing wrong. I can press the right
arrow to expand the folder but I do not like this approach because I am not as
sure if I am pasting in the correct place. Plus, I hate the really long list I
am presented with sometimes. I am using list view and I always have preferred
list view. It's the only one I really know how to use.

Thanks so much,

Gmail All Mail Label

2012-09-06 Thread Tim Hornik
I need help removing the All Mails label from Gmail. I attempted to
follow the various how to guides posted here and on the web, but run
into an issue involving the Google Labs tab in the settings menus. Can
anyone help me out with a step by step guide?

Here is my knowledge on the situation. I need to find a method to
enter into Gmail Settings. Once there, I need to find Labs and click
on advance IMAP settings. After this, I need to head back to Labels in
the settings menus and delete All Mails.

Thank you Tim

Re: Gmail All Mail Label

2012-09-06 Thread Christina C.
Hi,

I don't think you can remove the all mail label. I believe you can sort of
"unsubscribe" from that label so you don't end up with duplicates and such
while using imap. I will do a horrible job of explaining so I will send you
the link that helped me. When I went through this process I did find that I
could not find this labs unless I was using the standard view in gmail rather
than the basic html. I actually ended up having my ten year old give me
sighted assistance with setting this up. I don't know if that's necessary but
I was having a lot of trouble getting vO and gmail standard view to play nice.
There is a bit of old instructions in this article but if you understand what
the instructions are about then you should have no problems.

Re: AIFF files

2012-09-06 Thread Esther
Hi Stacey,

AIFF files are uncompressed audio files. The acronym stands for "Audio
Interchange File Format", and they are the Mac equivalent of WAV
files. The sound quality is equivalent, but the internal formatting
and header structure differs between AIFF and WAV files. All your
system sound files on the Mac are some form of AIFF or compressed AIFF
(with ".caf" extension name) file. Any simple, real-time streaming
audio recorder on your Mac or iOS device, including Voice Memos,
records to AIFF format. Producing a compressed format such as MP3 or
AAC requires that an app store or buffer the audio contents in some
way, and then perform a conversion in an intermediate step with an
encoding CODEC to transform the uncompressed recording as the app is
running.

Your Mac will see the sound files from commercial audio CDs as AIFF
files. On a Windows system, these would be seen as WAV files. There
are some differences in the kind and level of metadata in the headers
of these two formats when used by third-party apps, if you were
broadcasting, for example, but as far as audio content, just think of
AIFF files as the standard for Macs, and the counterpart to WAV files
on Windows.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Built in apple scripts

2012-09-06 Thread Esther
Hi Dan,

You can find a number of system AppleScripts in the /Library/Scripts
folder. Use the Command-Shift-G "go to folder" shortcut in Finder,
then type or paste in:
/Library/Scripts
Into the dialog box and press return. Note the slash character before
"Library" that indicates this is a system level folder, and not one
under your user account. That's slash, "Library", slash, "Scripts".
On older versions of the operating system (e.g., Leopard and Tiger),
there were more examples under the AppleScript Editor. In fact, a
quick way to find the above examples is to launch the AppleScript
Editor (Command-Shift-U in Finder to move to the Utilities folder,
quickly press "a p" to move to the AppleScript Editor, then use
Command-Down arrow to open it.). Once you've opened the AppleScript
editor, simply go to the help menu on the menu bar and arrow down.
There are options for "Show AppleScript Language Guide" and "Open
Example Scripts Folder". If you just want to go to the example scripts
without reading any of the other options, use either Control-F2 or VO-
M to move to the menu bar in AppleScrript Editor, Left arrow to
"Help"' arrow down into the menu, then press Command-Down arrow to
move to the last menu entry, which will be for opening the example
scripts folder, and press return to go there in Finder.

By the way, your "From:" name on this list now shows up as a hyphen. I
had a hard time finding this post to reply to it, since I've been
travelling and went "no mail", and read this on the web when I didn't
have time to reply. I only recognized you from your "XB" signature.
You might want to edit your Google Group account settings and change
your "nickname" from the hyphen character if this setting wasn't
deliberate.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Working with Flash

2012-09-06 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi, guys,

I am taking an online course which uses several videos which load onto a web
page and depend on flash. Does anyone have suggestions for how I might get
around this? Neither JAWS and Internet Explorer nor VoiceOver and Safari are
able to read them -- they simply load as blank pages in both browsers.

The instructor told me they are flash-based, with controls so the user can
stop, fast forward, pause, etc. at will.

Thanks for any help or work-around ideas.

Harry

Re: access admin account

2012-09-06 Thread Esther
Hi Max,

Brandon is correct; you should have administrator privileges.
However, even with admin privileges, you'll need to VO-space on "Click
the lock to make changes" and supply your password in order to delete
accounts. This is under System Preferences > Users & Groups on the
password tab. Use item chooser menu (VO-I) and type in "lock", then
arrow down to the "click the lock to make changes unchecked", and
press return or VO-space to go there. Then VO-space again to unlock
the control, and type your password into the authorizing dialog
window. Once you done this you can select the account you created and
delete it.

However, I usually keep at least one other guest or test account on my
system in order to check whether problem behaviors are system-wide or
specific to my account set-up. Once you've made changes to the user
account settings, you might want to VO-space on the lock again, to
prevent further changes to these settings.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: American HQ voice not working

2012-09-06 Thread Shen
Hi,
When you said even though it is not enabled, do you actually have the checkbox
under VoiceOver that says "use compact voice"?
Any iOS device needs to connect to iTunes once in order to get the high quality
voice. Not sure why that is. But you did say you reset your phone. So I would
connect it to iTunes, probably need to perform a sync. After that, you will not
have the high quality voice right away, but it will appear shortly.
Now if you do have the checkbox and it is unchecked, and you still don't have
the high quality voice, you might need to do a restore or perhaps another reset.
Generally, an iPhone with factory default settings do not have the "use compact
voice" checkbox. Only after performing a sync with iTunes, the checkbox will
appear.
I remember doing this with a brand new iPad. After sync, the high quality voice
did not appear. I left it and went to sleep. Some time during the night, it
appeared.

Try to do it in terminal
follow this - just copy and paste.

There are 4 commands you have to run. So copy the complete lines.

4 commands - each line starts with sudo

it will ask you to enter the password after the first command - when you type
your password no characters will show.
