Vo Support for Brailliant 40?
Hi all, I recently acquired a Brailliant 40 BI display. My distributor told me that this product would pair with IOS devices and my MacBook, however this does not appear to be the case. I have no problems using the Brailliant with a Windows machine, but so far have had absolutely no luck with anything Apple. I have done my own research, and it seems that this particular display is not yet supported with VO, but I thought I’d check on this list. Has anyone had luck with one of these things. I really hope so, because I absolutely fell in love with the display, and I’d love to keep it. Hi, I have the BI32, and no, as of yet, no support for IOS or mac. Apparently, apple still hasn't given humanware the go ahead. Did you go to settings, general, accessibility, VoiceOver, Braille? This is the place to pair Braille displays, and not via settings, general, bluetooth. A possible workaround that works for me sometimes. So have you removed dropbox in the Users & Groups Login Items list? That would at least solve the immediate problem. Then whenever I start the Dropbox module by hand, I get the same issues. this confirms further that some how, Dropbox and the finder go nuts in my environment. Also, if I start Dropbox, I could merely avoid the finder alltogether and just use shell commands to move/copy files to/from the Dropbox folder and then kill the app after Dropbox is caught up. Re: Captcha Solving on the Mac
Hi Scott. I'm not entirely sure what's going on with solona either but I might be able to help with Google's captchas. There should be a link for playing an audio captcha during the signup process. My advise to you would be to open a text edit document and then play back the audio [assuming it's actually there] back as many times as you need to here the challenge text and writing it down. Then when you are sure you've got it, write or copy and paste it in to the field where the captcha is typed. Google's audio captcha isn't the easiest to here but it is easier than some so just keep trying. HTH Matthew Campbell. Bluetooth Braille Display Randomly Getting Stuck with Most Recent Lion?
Hi, all, Is anyone else experiencing this one? Ever since I upgraded to the current version of Lion, I have occasional unresponsiveness of my Focus 40. Bluetooth status menu says it's connected, but it takes a reboot of my Mac mini to resolve the issue. Re: Mounting a network drive
Hi. This is a very annoying known issue in Lion. I don't remember what Apple scrued up but they broke some of the protocols which cause this issue. The easiest thing you can do is press command k in Finder, and type the following: smb:// and then the name on your network drive. Here is an example: smp://server and then press enter. If you have more than one network drive, you can store these as your favorit drives. Otherwise you just have to write this once, and then the address to your network drive won't be deleted next time you press command k. Growl preference issue question
Hi, I downloaded growl and it's in my applications but I am trying to get to the preferences and it just beeps at me and say that growl has no window. RE: Growl preference issue question
Hi there! I have no idea if these will help you or not, but I did a couple of very informal growl demos. For other list users, these also demonstrate the lion startup issues I'm having, so if anyone has time to listen, maybe they can tell me how to make Lion behave itself just a bit better. Anyway, I'm thinking that maybe if you hear them, it will help you understand how to use Growl a libble better. The quality isn't professional by any means, but just in case you're interested, here are links for downloading them. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1770137/Growl%20demo.mp3 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1770137/Troubleshooting%20Growl.mp3 Good luck, and I hope you find these useful. Yes, you can do this in the login items tab in your account settings in Users and Groups and System preferences. Make sure you mount the desired volumes first and then add them as you would if you wanted an application to startup with the system. I have done this and it works like a charm. Vo and Citrix?
Hello So I am very new to all things mac and Voiceover, having been a windows/jaws user for a while now. I am pursuing a job that would require me to use a mac and also at times make use of citrix... So I was wondering if Voiceover works with citrix? From what I know about jaws and citrix, Jaws requires a remote access license and that a copy of jaws be installed on the server. Are the same things required with voiceover? I'd really appreciate any help with this, like I said, it's all very new to me. Thank you for any help/explanations, Ashley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Super frustrated trying to read table
Hi Steve, I can't actually check what happens with an outstanding delivery, because I don't have an account or order with the Tassimo site. You may be correct that this, rather than shopping cart behavior, is the key issue. So it's possible that my comments are not relevant to Christine's buying experience, but this was the only way I could help assess possible accessibility issues in making purchases -- I've never used that web site before. Glad to hear that you found the discussion in the post useful, anyway. Item chooser menu is a really useful tool that has been around since the earliest versions of VoiceOver. When you quickly type the letters of word or part of a word, that's used to filter the results that show up. You can use the delete key to start again, if you want to try out typing a different search combination. And you can type search terms for "link" or "button" to further refine your search results. That's what I did by first quickly typing the letters for "just" and then quickly typing the letters for "but" -- which was a short way of further filtering the item chooser matched results for "buttons". Once you navigate to an item chooser menu item with your arrow keys, you select it with either VO-Space or by pressing "Return". It's important to realize that using item chooser menu only lets you navigate within an application, web page, etc. If there's a link or button you still have to issue a VO-Space or click to activate it. Also, in web pages most people will be using QuickNav for easier navigation with arrow keys and rotor, so the equivalent of VO-Space to activate will be simultaneously pressing the up and down arrow keys. However, the other corresponding issue for very new VoiceOver users is remembering whether QuickNav is turned on or off. The most common answers to new user questions, when VoiceOver doesn't appear to be behaving as you expect, are: (1) did you remember to interact? (operations and contextual menu content depend on context of usage -- so if you're in a table and you didn't interact, you won't be able to sort columns, for instance) and (2) do you still have QuickNav turned on? (when a "classic" VoiceOver command doesn't appear to be working as expected). Hope you're enjoying your Mac. Google, FB, Twitter, all have audio captchas. for people with hearing loss, these prove abysmally challenging, but even I have managed to solve them. Question on RipIt
First for the record I own these DVDs. So, for the question. I am using RipIt to pull a DVD in and compressing it to play on our APple TV. THe process is rip first and use HandBreak to perform the compression, but RipIt does all of this for you. THe problem is I have encountered a couple of movies where RipIt has ripped the DVD, but then seemingly cannot compress it and it chucks the entire project out. So, I have ripped the DVD and then tried to run HandBreak by hand, but still trying to sort out how to open the DVD file so HandBreak can see it. In any case has anyone any clue how to get these DVDs ripped? ANy thoughts? Thanks, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Vo and Citrix?
Based on my experience, you'd need be facing the same challenges with VO as you do with Windows and JAWS. If you're logging into a windows virtual environment, you'd need to be using a fusion like product to run windows and JAWS on your mac. I'm not aware of any Mac virtual environments being setup using that configuration but in my opinion, you'd need to run VO on the virtual machine to get the access. I know this isn't a true yes or no answer but its the best I have with my limited experience. It does sound like fun though. Re: Mounting a network drive
Yes, you have to press the, VO-space, on the, add button. When the dialog opens, go to the sidebar and select your network drive. Then, from the file list, select the actual volume or volumes you want to mount at start up. It's just like adding an application to your startup items. YOu don't need command-k once you set this up. appleScript help needed
Hi, Ok, so either appleScript or bash will suffice here. Here is my scenario: I have a textfile with a number of quotes in it. I want one of these quotes to be spoken and also to be shown on screen when mac OS is started, and I want this to happen independent of VoiceOver for it will not be running on the mac this is being made for. Now, after some digging I found out the easiest way to do this is by a nifty little terminal program called Fortune. This program allows quotes to be sent to the terminal from a specified file. I made the necessary files and I can send them to the Say command with a shell script. The info can therefore be spoken. But now I get stuck. I also want the same quote to be visible on screen, most preferably by means of a messageBox. My first idea was to use osascript -e display dialog. But this didn't work. Also thought of somehow sharing the info sent to Say by sending it to a variable and then sending that variable to Say. This works, but I don't know how to tell appleScript about this variable. Does anyone have an idea to get me out of this? I am running out of ideas pretty fast. Florian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Paul, OK, this is in System preferences. Start there. 1. Choose, Users and Groups 2. Choose your account. 3. Choose the login tab 4. Navigate to the table of applications that will run at startup. 5. Navigate to the, Add, button, and VO-space on it. 6. When the dialog opens, navigate to the sidebar as you would in any application dialog. Choose the network drive and then navigate to the volume list. 7. Navigate to the, open, button, and after you vo-space on it, the volume should be added to the table of applications. A Question About Facebook Apps and The Mac
Hello Everyone, I am going to cross-post this because I don't know which group will be more likely to know the answer. I have finally capitulated and begun using FaceBook. I am using Facebook on both my iPhone and my MacBook. I have joined a Facebook group. When I comment on someone's post to the group, I do not see my comment on my own wall. Can someone please tell me if this can be done and, if so, what must I do to make it happen. Again, I want any comments I make to someone else's post to show up on my wall. Also, I remember someone posting, somewhere, that using the FaceBook mobile site as the best place to interact with FaceBook. Is this still true? If you prefer to reply off-list, my email address is: mk...@ucla.edu Thank you all in advance. Shared Drive
I have both a Mac Mini and a separate Windows machine. I would like to be able to create a shared drive so that I do not need to send files back and forth with email or transfer with a thumb drive. For example, I might start working on a document on one machine and continue working on it with a different machine. I guess I want Dropbox functionality without dealing with Dropbox! I have no interest in running Windows on my Mac. Can somebody point out any web references that would explain how to do this? I am okay with purchasing new hardware if it is required. Re: Vo Support for Brailliant 40?
Humanware definately gave Apple all the information needed in order to support that display months ago. But, nobody has control over when Apple will get around to including a driver for that or any other display. It is totally in Apple's court. There has been a number of updates since this display was released, and Apple already had the information when the display was released. But, with a 1.35 GB release just recently they couldn't include a Braille display driver. And, who gets hurt? The display company and people who would like to use that display. Re: Vo Support for Brailliant 40?
Is that outburst really necessary? Why not criticize Apple for delaying puting in the driver for that display when they have had the information so that they could have put it in months ago. Why must you bash the company who did what they were required to do and gave Apple what they needed to put in the support instead of the company who has stalled again on this kind of thing with no criticism and no loss of sales because of it. Do you think that there were not people who would not purchase that display because it did not have the support yet. I know several folks who would like to have that display but they won't buy it until Apple has it supported. Loss Humanware, gain Apple. Re: Problems with new extended keyboard
I figured out the solution last night. In frustration, I went to the keyboard pane in preferences. One of the options was to use function keys as regular function keys. I check the box, and guess what, all of the function keys worked as function keys. Problem solved. Tom . Thanks, I appreciate your reply. I think that we all have a tendency to come down on producers of blindness products, and sometimes we do it without knowing all the facts. I'll admit I have done the same thing and found out later that I was in the wrong. Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!
You definitely need to at least have a monitor connected, the older minis, from before 2008 could get around this by connecting the adapter that allows you to connect it to a TV through the RCA plug. All newer minis however, must be connected to a monitor, no way around it. Re: about the workgroup manager app message for Tim
Hi Tim, Sorry for not getting back to you in a while. The preferences control for user management seems like a straight forward but daunting task. I wanted to share this little command line application that allows you to simulate moving a mouse to an x y coordinate and click the mouse. http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2008051406323031 You can type for instance click -x 500 -y 500 and it will move the mouse cursor to that location and emulate a click. It doesn't matter whether the wgm window is open then as you can always aftewards physically reclick the button. I use this often for certain au plugins on garage band that are not accessible. In this case, you can create a do shell script within applescript to get to the coordinates you want. You will eventually need to confirm that your coordinates are where each of the preferences are with the option shift 3 command if my memory serves me right, or using the voice over command to check where the mouse is in x y coordinates, which you obcviously have to configure in the vo settings. I will try this out when i have sighted assistance, but it has worked for me on several other applications which are exactly at the same degree of inaccessibility as the wgm user preferences pane. Hope this makes your life easier :) Best regards, Yuma On 28/01/2012, at 8:38 PM, TIM KILBURN wrote: > Hi Yuma/Scott, >> >> 1. For adding Users to Groups in WGM, it works in either direction.
