RE: can't get winamp to do anything

2011-11-05 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi there! These instructions do help a little; I heard the llama file, but
after that, I still wasn't able to get winamp to
actually play a file. I tried to open an mp3 and a midi, and nothing happened.
I tried going into preferences, but it seems
that it's just a bunch of unlabled buttons and things. Still, the program seems
to be working now, at least a little bit.
Thanks for your help, and if you have any additional instructions that might
get files to actually play, I'm sure we would
all be extremely grateful.
Missy

I downloaded it and had to play around with it.

I'll have to try this on a fresh installation to be 100% sure, but, here is
what seemed to work.

I launched the app, made sure I was in the window by commad-tabbing. It said,
"winamp has no windows" I then pressed space
then enter. I got the llama message.
Try that and se if it works.

Re: Winamp no good for me

2011-11-05 Thread David McLean
Lion. I had to fool with it to get it to work at all myself and I thought it
was hitting the enter key that finally did it.
Given the fact that everyone else seems to be having a problem I'll tell you I
also tried moving the app to the applications folder as well, hitting the
spacebar, and hitting escape. Also tried bringing up any context key that
might exist with control/option/m.
Ultimately something I did worked but I'm not sure which one it was.

Re: can't get winamp to do anything

2011-11-05 Thread David McLean
In Finder, go to an mp3 file, hit command+i and go down to the open with
pop-up. One of the options should be Winamp. Alternatively in the Winamp app
itself you can open a file by hitting command+l and selecting it.
This version of Winamp appears to be totally library oriented unlike the
Windows version which has a library but can also be started from Windows
Explorer.

got Winamp to work, but, it needs quite a bit of work yet

2011-11-05 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay.

Well, I launched winamp and turned off Voice Over. Then, pressed space bar
then return. Got the lama thingy then turned Voice Over back on. So far as I
can tell, it seems not to have ENQ. At least, I can't find it. Also, the only
thing the preferences seems to bring up is the watch folder. Can't focus on
anything else. Not ready for serious consideration yet.

what's the deal with replying to sender?

2011-11-05 Thread Goodin, Donna
Hi all,

Just wondering if others have found that in recent OS incarnations, it doesn't
seem to be possible in Mail to reply to sender. When I navigate to message
headers and interact, there seems to be no way to highlight the sender's
address, which of course means I can't get the context menu to come up. Have
others found this to be the case? Has anyone found a work-around?
TIA,
Donna

Re: what's the deal with replying to sender?

2011-11-05 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Yep, I believe I have. The trick is to interact with the header group, then,
what you do is use VO+left or right to focus on the address of the person to
whom you wish to reply, then, Press VO+left arrow just once. I don't know
quite why this works, but, at this point, the short cut menu should be
available to you.

abby fine reader

2011-11-05 Thread Denise Avant
hello all,
i am wondering if anyone uses abby fine reader on the mac? i want to know how
good the scan quality is, and what scanners might be supported. i have one of
the older pansoic portable scanners, which i have had for about 6 or 7 years.
can i get a demo of the abby fine reader to try out on the mac?
does one have to save the scanned document and then go to text edit to read it?
thanks.
i am an openbook user when in windows at work, and so i am looking at the
comparison of the quality of the scan to this program.

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi donna, Just about anything is preferable to ITunes, but I think right now
it's just the novelty of the thing for us windows switchers who have fond
memories of winamp for windows. Especially before it got bought out by AOL.
These days I get my windows clients to start out on the KM player since winamp
is now chuck full of bloatware.

I'm not tempted to try it myself since vlc does what I need but winamp for the
mac has been too long in coming for sure. Hopefully the great pioneers on this
list will convince AOL to take an accessible direction with winamp development
and then we'll have yet another option.

Only because it is a very popular music player in Windows so the fact that it

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, to speak frankly, I will tell you; at least from my point of view. With
regard to ITunes as a player, (and mind you I speak here strictly in terms of
the layer itself), I can't argue with it. Well, almost. ITunes doesn't do
ENQ. Okay, there's the ITunes DJ thingie I grant you, but, I can't find tracks
easily with that, and, besides, I don't want to be adding tracks and files to
the ITunes Library all the time just to make them easier to find. Now, we come
to the real issue. ITunes is so damn library dependant. The ITunes library
really sucks! Let's say I have the song "Life Without you" and it's in the
.m4a for mat. Well, I have it on my hard drive; but, when I add it to my
ITunes library, it creates a duplicate file of exactly the same size. That
means I've got two copies of the file where as I only wish to have just one.
that's a waste of disk space. The ITunes library is so cluncky it's beyond
belief. I have numorous loose files which are not tagged and which I have no
wish to add to the ITunes Library thus making unnecessary duplicates. Much
better, so far as I am concerned, to have a layer which has ENQ and which can
be triggered directly from the finder window. In short, you locate your first
file in the finder, and, you can ENQ that file in to your player directly.
Then, the next file and the next and so forth. The player would also allow you
to directly control the cross fading between files and no lag time at all
between files. That's just the start.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Ricardo and all:

Would have to agree with you. Itunes has worked quite well on this end. That
was not always the case. When voiceover first can on the scene, Itunes was
quite difficult to navigate. In the name of accurate journalism, Itunes is
quite a good product now regardless of historical evolution.

Other products are quite good as well though hey ... you purchased an apple
product ;).

Even if it became accessible not sure I would put MS office on this machine ...
or any other ... hahahaha

Take good care and I wish you enough.

RE: can't get winamp to do anything

2011-11-05 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi there! Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried to use open with already, and
winamp doesn't show up as an option, at least
not under snowy kitty. I didn't have any better luck in Lion. I also tried
command L, and found the file I wanted, but it
didn't do anything. I'll try again, though, just in case I'm missing something.

In Finder, go to an mp3 file, hit command+i and go down to the open with
pop-up. One of the options should be Winamp.
Alternatively in the Winamp app itself you can open a file by hitting command+l
and selecting it.
This version of Winamp appears to be totally library oriented unlike the
Windows version which has a library but can also be
started from Windows Explorer.

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I don't understand some parts of this. Yes, iTunes is library dependant. But
I don't look at this as a negative. Yes, it does make a duplicate copy when
you import a song but, only if you want it to. You can easily go into iTunes
preferences and under advanced uncheck Copy files to iTunes Media folder when
adding to library. But, since I have my music and other media save on the
harddrive of my computer, I prefer this on when copying music from an external
drive. I admit, it takes some work to set up iTunes the first time if you have
a large library. But after that, its super easy to use in my opinion. As for
just playing a song in my finder, I just use quick look.

Re: abby fine reader

2011-11-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Denise,

ABBYY FineReader for the Mac does very good OCR, but as far as I can tell, it
only processes one scan at a time. I therefore use VueScan to scan as many
pages as I want into one file, which FineReader then processes with no
difficulty. The resulting text file opens automatically in TextEdit.

I have VueScan set to create a TIFF file, and have set all TIFF files to open
with ABBYY FineReader, so that the handover from VueScan to FineReader is
automatic.

The number of scanners supported directly by ABBYY FineReader seems limited,
but VueScan supports most scanners, including many that have been around for a
long time.

Remember that ABBYY FineReader for Mac is an express version so not at all
tweakable.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Ray, You can thwart that whole duplicate issue by configuring ITunes
correctly. In fact, you can spend hours on initial set up configuring ITunes
to do what you want it to. Or you can use the combination of quicklook and vlc
and escape the library trap. That way your library won't crash on you one day
and dump all it's info about your music and half the configuration you spent
hours on, not to mention the remote possibility of losing your actual music
along with it.

I left windows to escape that kind of politics.

Best,

Strange e-mailing problem

2011-11-05 Thread Christine Grassman
We are at a loss over here. Both my husband and I have Macbooks, while my kids
have PC's. Most people we e-mail to have PC's; we have never had e-mailing
issues.
However, for a reason we cannot fathom, my husband and I cannot get anything
sent to his parents. Straight text, attachments, forwards, replies, nothing.
We have tried reentering addresses in the address book, having them check their
spam folders, cutting and pasting from text documents -- our sent folders say
that all messages have gone through -- but they are not receiving them. They
are both receiving e-mails from others with no problems. I do not know what
else to try. Has anyone ever faced this? (Full disclosure: we use gmail; they
use optonline.net)

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Ricardo and all:

I have the ultimate respect for anyone who wishes to use another application to
do whatever they would like. OK, having said that here comes the wind up ;).

Given many of Apple's networking features this sounds like the re-battle of an
older argument. If one sets Itunes not to import as you stated the library
issue is not triggered and if you set up itunes many ways to play music again
the library is not triggered. And, cross fading may be altered as well with
some playing. Itunes was not initially designed to be a professional or
semi-professional mixing app. So, if the argument is that Itunes is not a good
mixing console ... well ... that is not its purpose. Kind of like calling text
edit a horrible spreadsheet program.

Phew, glad that got written :).

Hope everyone is getting the maximum use of both their hardware and software
today. Go out and make a movie ... Steve would like that.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi Ray.
One thing that may help is to go in to iTune's preferences, go to the advanced
section, and uncheck the option to add file to the iTunes music folder option.
My apologies in advance for the probably misnaming of the option that you'll
want. It's pretty close though.
When you select this option, it'll stop iTune from essentially duplicating
you're files. One area where it is helpful to have this on however, is when you
are adding music from an external drive that you'll want to have on you're main
machine.
HTH.

Re: Does Photo Stream actually work?

2011-11-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Kevin,

Yes PhotoStream does work just fine. Once everything is set up properly, it
just works automatically even when your iPhone is not connected to AC power.
Make sure that:

• PhotoStream is only activated on your primary iCloud account. That is, your
iCloud account that your Apple ID is related to.
• iCloud is configured for PhotoStream in the System Preferences of your Mini
and in the settings for that specific account on the iPhone.
• Photos that you take on the iPhone will appear in the PhotoStream album of
iPhoto.

Re: Why Winamp?

2011-11-05 Thread Goodin, Donna
I hope I'm not being dense here, but I don't get it. So you're saying that if
I stick a CD into my computer and import that CD into iTunes, I end up with two
copies of the file? Obviously one is in the iTunes media folder, but where on
earth would the other one be? All of my music is either purchased from the
iTunes store, or imported directly from CDs I owned, so I don't see how I'm
ending up with duplicate copies.

Donna

You can also control cross-fading in Itunes through the Preferences pane.
Since I don't care that much about it, I don't know anything more, but I know

Hi.

How can I add a jenre and description to a movie I ripped in Handbrage and
added to iTunes? I tried looking in the get more info field, but I can't
find the options. Is there some way to let Handbrake find this info
automatically and adding it to the file? Thanks for any help.

Changing label in mail msg list

2011-11-05 Thread Traci
Hello all,

The other week, someone made the suggestion to relabel inside the msg list to
shorten the extra verbiage. Could that person or anyone expand in more detail
on how to do this?

For example, VO currently says 3 message conversation collapsed disclosure
triangle. Boy, that is a lot to listen to, while scrolling down my msg list.

How do I go about changing some of that, and is the label only changed for
mail? Does it work for each incoming message?

Thanks,
Traci

Re: abby fine reader

2011-11-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Denise,

VueScan is only available direct from the developer, Ed Hamrick. It costs $39
for one year, or $79 for life. It has regular updates, mainly adding support
for new scanners. The Website is:
www.hamrick.com

ABBYY FineReader comes from the Appstore. I don't know how much it costs in
dollars, but in euros, it's €79. $99 sounds more likely than $199.

VueScan will actually do OCR as well, but it isn't as good as FineReader, and
it doesn't correct the orientation, unlike FineReader.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: creating audio cd for the car

2011-11-05 Thread Paul Erkens
hi,
An alternative to burning an audio cd in itunes is burn. Burn is a program for
the mac that yu will find on google. It has a very very straight forward
interface, and all you do is launch it, hit add, select your tracks and hit
burn. Set the speed to burn at, and you have an audio cd. I discovered burn a
few weeks ago and it's fine. One thing to be aware of, is that if you have live
tracks, and you don't want a gap of 2 seconds between the tracks, then you
cannot select this in the final burn dialog. Instead, you do it in burn's
preferences, but for the rest it's okay.

Does anyone understand how Ping works?

guys,
do any of you understand how Ping works? I have two basic questions. First,
how does one invite people to follow them or choose people to follow? Second,
during the setup process, I'm pretty sure I saw some means by which you could
post your Ping comments directly, or maybe even simultaneously to Facebook. I
haven't seen how to do this since and would like to. any help appreciated.

Agreed. I noticed it 2 or 3 weeks ago. The HTML code sent to the browser
is user-agent dependent. If you emulate Internet Explorer or Firefox, no
problem at all: what you get from FB is the old and working code, if
your browser sensd Safari as user-agent, well, it's a mess. Just for
information, if you emulate Safari with Firefox under Windows with NVDA
or JAWS as screen readers or Orca under linux, you'll have the same
problem. But, since iesterday, the problem was present only at
http://m.facebook.com.

 Hi,

I don't understand some parts of this. Yes, iTunes is library dependant.
But I don't look at this as a negative. Yes, it does make a duplicate
copy when you import a song but, only if you want it to. You can easily
go into iTunes preferences and under advanced uncheck Copy files to iTunes
Media folder when adding to library. But, since I have my music and other
media save on the harddrive of my computer, I prefer this on when copying
music from an external drive. I admit, it takes some work to set up
iTunes the first time if you have a large library. But after that, its
super easy to use in my opinion. As for just playing a song in my finder,
 I just use quick look.

changing the user-agent property in webkit

2011-11-05 Thread Eric Oyen
is there a means to change the user-agent string that safari sends to websites?
I find that some sites that see safari as a user-agent turn out to be very
messy. if I use another browser (such as mozilla firefox on linux or windows) I
can get a webpage that is far better laid out. mostly, this is in relation to
Facebook and how they present the pages (they made presentation user-agent
dependent which messes up the interactive nature of the m.facebook.com site for
us safari users).

Re: impossible anymore to like or comment on people's Facebook posts

2011-11-05 Thread Eric Oyen
do any of you have the instructions to change the user-agent string in safari
so that it reports as internet explorer 8?

I am on OS X using safari and my problems with its user-agent go far beyond
Facebook.

Re: impossible anymore to like or comment on people's Facebook posts

2011-11-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, eric,

In Safari preferences, go to advanced and choose "show developer menu". Then
go into the "develop" menu, the user agent submenu, and you can choose IE 8 or
9 from there.

Re: impossible anymore to like or comment on people's Facebook posts

2011-11-05 Thread Traci
It baffles me how everyone can have such different experiences with the fb
site. Is it possible my Facebook page isn't updated yet?

I just hopped on there to see what folks were talking about and I saw the like
and comment buttons just below the posts. I liked navigating via headings, and
how the heading included the person's name and their post.

Wonder why it doesn't seem changed for me yet?

Yep. You do this in the Developer menu. IF you can't see that menu, you need
to turn it on in the advanced tab of the prefs window.

Re: Does Photo Stream actually work?

No. That should not affect things at all. I believe that would only be
necessary if you did not have PhotoStream capabilities. That is, if you didn't
have an iCloud account, with PhotoStream, or if you only had 3G capabilities,
you would use that method to transfer your photos.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that there was a way to set up
iTunes so that it doesn't add everything you play to your library. Perhaps
I was dreaming. Lol.

The one thing I don't like about itunes as a media player is that it insists
on adding every file that is played to your library, that's why I use vlc.
Itunes is not bad in itself, but I got tired of having to clean up my
library all the time.

Mail and Safari

2011-11-05 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi all,

Okay, so I've come to the end of my rope. I'm not really mad or anything, just
considerably frustrated to slowly pulling out my hair. Now mind you, I don't
really know what I am doing on the MBP yet, but, nutting seems to be working
the way it used to. So. Can someone waddle me through resetting my Lion mail
and Safari to their original factory settings? One thing though, I don't want
to loose any of my bookmarks in Safari, nor do I want to loose any of my many
mailboxes and saved posts - especially from this illustrious list.

I only wish to reset these two programs back to the way they were when I first
installed Lion.

So, dear folks, what should I do first?
