Re: Dragon! :)
Hi Esther, I experienced a problem with dictate, and I know there's no such equal thing as in Android, but maybe you know if there is a work around. When I speak into Dragon dictate, of course there is the voiceover issue, where it talks while the recording is already happening. This can be overcome by ear phones. In Android, after speaking part of a sentence, you can let go of the record button, and Android gives a few choices, so you can pick the correct recognition from that list and then you go on with the next bit. On my iPhone, I cannot seem to do just that. After it recognizes something wrong, I need to do my own text editing to get it right again. I would like to just speak again though, because I want to avoid swiping and typing as much as possible. What do I do, when Dragon Dictate did not understand me correctly? Is there a simple way to just redo it, instead of editing out the errors? Editing takes a lot of time for me, so once you have an error in the text, the speed gain is lost. Interested to know about this. Paul. Re: [Bulk] controlling the cpu fan
Personally I would just leave the fan alone. I see little value in trying to change what engineers have spent time determining is optimal for the machine. Re: Dragon! :)
Hi Musiclady! When you open the app! You have a dictate button and when you've pressed it speak the message you want! So its decide first if your going to send sms or email or post a facebook status or a tweet! After you've spoke you can then choose the keyboard button to check how well the app transcribed your text! And tidy up anything that needs editing! When your happy you press the menu and select the option you wish to use! If you pick email your text will be put into the body of a new message and you have to fill in the rest like subject and so on! I hope they can improve this so you can pick something like add to email or add to comments in facebook! If they would be able to do such things within the softwares capabilities! hth Colin On 4 Oct 2011, at 10:24, musiclady wrote: > So how does it work? Welcome to the list. I, too, have LCA, by the way. First, I can't answer the eBook or captcha questions; I use my iPod or BrailleNote for books and I have no idea about captchas. Browsers: only Safari works with VoiceOver. However, you can install Chrome and then install ChromeVox (see Kevin's post on it from yesterday) and use that in place of Safari. Firefox, Opera, or any other browser besides those two will not work. Apps: before answering, we (the list) need to know what sorts of things you want to do. Youtube? Twitter? Wordprocessing? Music player? Music creator? Sound editing? Re: installing and uninstalling apps general qution
Hi Iona, To add to this, when you download an app from the app store and you hit install in the store, it will automatically be download, and be put into your applications folder. When you install other, single file apps yourself, you do the same thing manually. In other words, you can either download an app from a website, if the developer makes it available that way, and you will then manually need to install the app, usually by taking it from a downloaded dmg file and putting it into your applications folder yourself, or, you download it from the app store, instead of the developers website, in which case everything happens automatically, i.e. it installs into your applications folder and the licensing then has been taken care of by the app store. To uninstall an app, it depends on the app how to uninstall it. There are 2 main procedures. 1: Delete the app from your applications folder, or 2: run an uninstaller if available. The simplest, and this is allowed for most apps, is that you just delete it from your applications folder and it is gone. If the app is a background service though, like dropbox and others, you may need to terminate the app first, then remove it from your login items in system preferences, and finally you can then delete it from the applications folder. Another thing to remember is that most programs leave data elsewhere, for example in your own home folder under library. Safari does it, Skype does it as well, like many other apps. So, just deleting skype.app from your applications folder, will not get rid of the data thet Skype leaves behind in your home folder. The second procedure, as opposed to just deleting the app from your applications folder, is to run an uninstaller that came with the app, or you can sometimes download one separately. You don't need launchpad to uninstall something. I don't exactly know what you mean by rearranging icons in iTunes on your iPhone. Hth, Paul. Re: Is there a work-around for accessing this site with Safari or Omniweb?
Just one little nit here. There is no correlation between the use of javascript and bad accessibility. Actually you must use javascript in many cases to make pages accessible such as updating ARIA roles and states when interacting with a widget or moving focus to a reasonable place when a user actions an item. Of course there are lots of sites that use javascript to add interactivity to a site and fail to do it in an accessible way, but that's not a problem with javascript. Now if we could just get Safari up to speed on ARIA we could really get some sites accessible. As it is today I test web accessibility on Firefox on Jaws or NVDA and hope it will work on Safari sometime in the future. CB On 10/2/11 3:30 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Christine, I wasn't able to get anywhere with the main web site in Safari with VoiceOver on. Not only does the site use flash for its contents, but the source page view indicates that they are using a lot of javascript. I couldn't even click in the web page and select all to send the contents to TextEdit for viewing via the services menu option. What did work was doing a Google search for a separate page for Red Mango gift cards. I found this URL for their online card sales: https://redmango.myguestaccount.com/login/web_card_sale/selectcards.srv I think this is the page you can eventually get to if you manage to get past all the flash and javascript. Navigate to the Quantity field of the denomination gift card you want ($25, $50, $75, etc.), route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor with VO-Command-F5 and click with VO-Shift-Space in the text field. Then type the number of cards you want and press return. You'll be taken to the Billing& Shipping page, and can continue. I didn't try to go through the whole order placement, but this seemed to work with Safari and VoiceOver once you get past that main web page. I'd normally try to find a search field or sitemap link on the main page to do a search, but it didn't work in this case, so I tried Google. So the workaround in this case was to search for the specific web page on the redmango.com site that dealt with gift cards, and hope that if I found this that it wouldn't have the same flash problems of the main page of the site. Navigating messages in mail classic layout
Hi all, I am frustrated with the new lion mail layout since it keeps marking messages as read as I scroll through them. Has anyone found a way around it? I have for the moment enabled classic layout and disabled the preview pain. Now I am running into a different problem. Is there a way to navigate the messages without having to hear only the from or subject column as I change lines? I know I can press vo r to hear all the info but then it talks too much saying the headers unnecessarily. Any help in customizing this would be very appreciated! Re: Navigating messages in mail classic layout
Hi. This is an easy one. First stop interacting with the messages table if you are interacted with it. You can do this with VO shift up arrow. Next and finally, use just the arrow keys by them selves with no VO keys. This should work well for you. However, it will not stop messages from being marked unread. HTH. The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.
Hi, here we go again. Every time I switch on my Mac I take a deep breath. I think about all the amazing reviews I’ve read about these computers and assume that perhaps, this time, I will finally have a really positive experience. Today’s task was uploading something to sendspace. Things started off so well. Sendspace.com loaded no problem; I found the select file button no problem/ when I clicked on it, I got a window opening for me to choose my file. I’m not saying this is the fault of the Mac; it’s probably me and my stubbornness after years of using windows, but it took me ages to find the file I wanted. Did I have to interact with the sidebar or the thing that was called list. There was also a popup menu with a folder selected. Choices choices. After a few minutes of pressing buttons I found the file. The process seemed to have some level of cohesion to it, but I’m not sure what exactly it was. I’m sure it’s very clever and much simpler than the windows way of doing things. In windows I could have found my file in three seconds, rather than four minutes. Anyway, I accept that this is probably just something I need to learn and practise. Fine. I found my file and went to upload. I pressed the upload button and I got: “Safari busy. Busy. Busy. Busy”. After a half a minute I eventually heard “safari, ready”. Hurrah, I can finally check to see if my file is uploading. I pressed VO right arrow and heard to my dismay “Safari busy. Busy. Busy”. I quit safari and tried again. But I got the same problem. Yet again I shut down my Mac and booted up my windows machine. Within two minutes my file was happily uploading to send space. While it uploaded I checked my emails using another instance of Internet explorer. The file has now finished uploading and I am going to email it to my friends. Windows hasn’t said “busy” at me once. And what really gets me about this is that the netbook cost £150 and I’m using the free screen reader NVDA. How is it possible? I really want to know. I’ve got way more am than my windows machine, and my Mac cost fifteen times more than my netbook. How come I have to keep turning off my Mac and turning on my windows machine? The mac looks great; it’s fast; it’s really quiet – very little fan noise. But it can’t do things. It’s ten times faster than my windows computer, but that only means it can do much more to annoy me in a far shorter period of time than my windows computer. I want to join the Mac party. You all seem so elated by your Macs. Is there a magic button to press that starts making it behave. I know I’m ranting again but surely you can see my point. Is my experience so anomalous? I read about all these people who say they bought a Mac and now never use windows. But if I didn’t have a windows computer then I’d achieve nothing. I know this isn’t’ VO specific. I know it may even annoy some of you. I know it’s not a particularly productive email. But if you do find this email to be annoying and unproductive, think of it as a metaphor for my general experience with the Mac. I feel as if I am the odd one out, and I am waiting for the day that I am castigated from this list for being “too PC”. O what irony. I hope you all enjoyed my hilarious ending joke. I’m so sorry for ranting. I feel like an idiot. Please, treat me like one. Tell me how I get the Mac to do the fundamental element of a computer. That is: to compute! Because I am going to end up not bothering to turn this machine on, which is such a shame because it should be a great computer? Apparently. I’m sure I’ll get there, and I promise, if I do, I’ll be singing the Mac’s praises. setting up a printer for the first time
Hi Guys. I have not yet had a printer on my Mac. My husband and I have a network printer since I don't use it very much. He had tried to set up a printer on the iPhone and get Air Print to work. He couldn't get it to work. I just had a situation where I wanted to print a file from TextEdit. However, I couldn't figure out how to do printer setup. I went to help, and couldn't find it. I finally had to make a copy of the file, and go to the Vista desk top computer running Jaws. The file has to be postmarked by tomorrow, so I had to get it done. I guess I should have figured this out before I needed it. Thanks ahead of time guys. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Navigating messages in mail classic layout
Hi all, I made the switch ok to the classic layout. I beg to differ about the messages being marked as read as you arrow through them. Re: Show Notes for Podcasts
Show notes are typically embedded in a podcast file. Tapping on a playing podcast's album art in the iPod app will display them. Most podcast apps have some similar feature, often part of a contextual menu. You can also usually find the notes at the podcast's feed page. Question about Conversation View in YoruFukurou
Hi, If I press command 3 on a tweet that is part of a conversation, it takes me to the conversation view. The problem I have is that, when arrowing up and down through the conversation, only part of each tweet is read by voiceover. It might say the first three or four words, but that's it. I can see the entire tweet by going into the drawer, but I'm wondering if there is an easier way to read the tweets in a conversation. Thanks in advance for any assistance. update on searching mailbox for specific messages in lion
Hi all, I just checked with apple and discovered that the search mailbox is too smart for its own good. If you type let's say >june> in the search field it assumes you are looking for a date and will not let you look in other fields easily. One of these instances where it thinks it knows what you want and is wrong. I found an interesting workaround for the time. If in the message table and not interacting with it you can type the text you are looking for and it will find the first occurrence of the text in what ever field it is. If you want the next occurrence you type the text again and it finds it. Not ideal but works. HOpe they fix this. RE: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.
I can definitely relate--Finder is one of the most confusing aps and I agree it takes much longer to find files for me than it does on my Windows machine. I find both Finder and ITunes confusing in the way they are laid out and would welcome any tutorials on either one of these aps. I have already read the Apple 101 tutorial for ITunes but found it sadly lacking as it didn't have any information relating to VoiceOver. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of David Eagle Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2011 4:32 PM To: macvisionaries Subject: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace. Re: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.
Here's what I have found by just experimenting... 1. The list and sidebar are both important. The sidebar is where you select your location, and the list (after the vertical splitter) shows the contents of what you have selected. 2. Cmd up closes a folder in a tree, and cmd down opens one. 3. It is easiest to hit cmd-3 when in the finder. In this mode, right arrow opens folders and left arrow closes them, just like trees in windows. Again, this is what I have found while playing around so I could be wrong. By the way, has anyone found a way to just type a path? In windows, I nearly always just open up the run box and type the path to where I want to go, but I'm not sure if finder has a way to do that. Sometimes I just want to fire up bash and forget the rest of the interface exists! Re: editing html code
Hi, Ioana, I'd think TextEdit would work well for this. I used to use Notepad for this very same thing. I haven't tried this with TextEdit, but I'm sure it would work. Just be sure you save it as a text file and don't have any formatting in it. Then you could save another version as html and view it in Safari to check the results. Option-click
I searched and found someone asked this before. How do you option-click a button? Ricardo mentioned turning the Trackpad commander off and clicking while holding down the option. I tried that and just got the desktop, or more likely whatever random object over which my finger sat. So does anyone know how to option-click a button? Thanks. - Austin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Re: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.
Hello Alex, To answer your question, yes, you can simply type a path to the folder for any file in Finder. Use the shortcut key sequence Command-Shift-G for "Go to folder" when you're in Finder or in any dialog window that asks you for a file. In the text box type or paste in the path you want to use and press return. This path can be to a folder on a mounted external disk, a system library, another user's account, etc. For example, if I have a file named "my_paper.doc" in a sub-folder of "Documents" named "Papers" on a Crucial USB memory stick that in plugged into the USB port on my computer, I can navigate to that folder with Command-Shift-G and type in a path like: /Volumes/Crucial/Documents/Papers and press "Return". This will point Finder to this folder, and I can then navigate to the file I want, for example, by typing the first few letters of the file name. If I press Command-Down Arrow when I am on that file I will open it with the default application (e.g., TextEdit for a text file, Preview for a PDF file, etc.). If I navigated to an application, then pressing Command-Down Arrow launches the application. However, most applications will be in either the Applications folder or the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder, and there are separate shortcuts to move to those folders (Command-Shift-A for "Applications"; and Command-Shift-U for "Utilities"). We just added ChromeVox to the Chrome Web Store! Hooray! Here are some of the advantages to installing ChromeVox from the Web Store: - You'll get automatic updates - Version numbers mean something - We have a fancy new icon :) I updated the Installation Instructions here: http://code.google.com/p/google-axs-chrome/wiki/InstallingChromeVox and they describe how to download it from the Web Store. Here is the quick version: 1) Make sure you're running Chrome 14 or higher 2) Uninstall any previous version of ChromeVox 3) Go to the ChromeVox page in the Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kgejglhpjiefppelpmljglcjbhoiplfn 4) Click on the "Add to Chrome" button 5) A dialog should pop up titled "Confirm Installation" that lists the permissions that ChromeVox needs. We have a wiki page now about why we need these permissions if you're interested: http://code.google.com/p/google-axs-chrome/wiki/PermissionsGuide . Click on the "Install" button to complete the installation process. 6) Yay, ChromeVox is now installed! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
