Welcome to the list. I, too, have LCA, by the way. First, I can't answer the eBook or captcha questions; I use my iPod or BrailleNote for books and I have no idea about captchas.
Browsers: only Safari works with VoiceOver. However, you can install Chrome and then install ChromeVox (see Kevin's post on it from yesterday) and use that in place of Safari. Firefox, Opera, or any other browser besides those two will not work. Apps: before answering, we (the list) need to know what sorts of things you want to do. Youtube? Twitter? Wordprocessing? Music player? Music creator? Sound editing?
