Can't find my applications installed through appstore

2011-09-20 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I've installed Lightening browser on my computer running Lion via the
Appstore but I can't find it anywhere. At first, I thought I had
failed to install it but when I go to the Appstore, it says that the
application has been installed. It's not in the downloads folder, it's
not in the application folder, it's not on my dock. Where is it? Has
anyone else had this experience?

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

In Lion mail, if you go to its preferences with vo comma, you can find the view
most recent message checkbox in the viewing tab. After going into mail
preferences, go to the toolbar, interact, move to viewing and hit it with vo
spacebar. There is the checkbox.

They do.

I think your looking at the unified inbox. try going to the inbox that
displays messages from both accounts and press the right arrow to expand. you
should now be able to see an inbox for both accounts underneath the unified.

Menu Navigation Issues - Help with checking a bug please

2011-09-20 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi guys

I am still having issues when navigating menus. I am referring to the menu you
land on when you press VO+M. I am guessing this is unusual. I have posted
previously about this but just to reiterate the basic problem. WhenI use the
arrow keys to navigate I find that the focus is lost and I am taken back to the
Apple menu. For example I might press VO+M, then right arrow over to the File
menu, then start arrowing down this menu. Whilst arrowing down or then
attempting to arrow across into a sub menu the focus will be thrown back to the
apple menu and I will have to start from there again.
I had a one to one appointment in the apple store and advised of the issue.
However of course it did not occur once during the appointment. It was only
after that I realised that I had had zoom turned right down during the hour. I
have since tested this and found that when zoom is turned up to the maximum 20
times then issues ensue. i have zoom set to follow the cursor with it at the
centre of the screen.

One interesting thing about the issue is that if I don't use the arrow keys but
instead use the track pad commander then menu navigation is not effected by the
zoom level.

Could someone else test this on their system to see if they can replicate it.

Thanks for any help.

Garth

searching printer drivers canon ip4850

2011-09-20 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone,
In the past i always had hp printers and i found it really easy to find their
drivers either for mac or for windows. I now have a canon printer though with
two drawers one to put in paper and one that spews paper out. I want the drawer
on the back to be the paper inlet and the other one to be the outlet but under
windows you could only edit those settings after installing the drivers.
I found it already really difficult to find windows drivers for this printer
let alone ones for mac os x.
Would someone be willing to help me with this?
Thanks in advance

see more from, in lion mail

2011-09-20 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,
In the old days, before July this year, lol, we used to see all of the incoming
message text we received. Nowadays, this is no longer true. If you hear: see
more from, and then a name, how can you unhide that part of the message text,
that Lion mail so neatly hides to unclutter the view? See more from, appears to
be a link, but I have not managed to click on it. Any ideas?

More about Window-Eyes and VMware Fusion 4

2011-09-20 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

I just wanted to report that if you have a VM that was created with Fusion
version 3 Window-Eyes will work with this VM using fusion 4 as long as you
don't let fusion 4 upgrade the vm to fusion 4.

To be clear, I am not talking about the installation of fusion 4 vmware tools.
This happens automatically. What I am talking about is the fact that when you
try to start up a vm that was created with fusion 3, fusion 4 will ask to
upgrade the vm. If you want Window-Eyes to continue working, do not upgrade the
vm.

Re: Menu Navigation Issues - Help with checking a bug please

2011-09-20 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi Ricardo

I am using a Mac Book Air but am positive that this is not the issue. I have
made sure not to touch the track pad. I am able to make the behaviour occur by
following the steps I outlined before. Whilst typing this message I have jumped
up to the menu bar whilst zoom is at 20 times, the focus jumps back to the
Apple menu consistently. Whilst still in the menu bar I can use the Option
Command Minus key combo to reduce the zoom to 1 times and I am then able to
navigate the menu structure normally. If I then use the Option Command Plus
keystroke to again take the zoom level back up then issue comes back.

Thanks

Re: More about Window-Eyes and VMware Fusion 4

Hi,

I have not tried creating a new vm but suspect that Window-Eyes would be broken
with a new vm under fusion 4.

You don't seem to have any choice about upgrading vmware tools. At least on my
system, the tools get upgraded automatically as soon as you start a vm.

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Rachel,

If you're going to be scanning in languages other than just English, then
DocuScan is not for you.

Abbyy FineReader can handle up to three languages in the one document and does
a good job.

I use VueScan to create the images as it does an excellent job, then I have it
set to hand over to ABBYY FineReader to do the OCR.

I scan a whole book at a time using VueScan, then ABBYY FineReader does the OCR
in one go.

You can't start reading the book until the OCR is finished.

The thing to remember about scanning and OCR, is that the output depends on the
quality of the input. You have to make sure that the scans are as good as
possible, which can be difficult when scanning a double-page of a book at a
time. I place a print dictionary on top of the scanner lid to hold the book
flat while scanning and get good results this way.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Rachel magario
Thanks Anne,

You are right, I do need multiple languages, and I am guessing computer
language is like another language on its own sometimes. :)
I noticed the quality issue, so I was thinking to buy those scanners that have
3 high speed cameras. Do you know if that works well by any chance?
Also, is there a type of scanner that works better with vuescan over another?
How do you do your books? Do you turn page by page, or you feed pages through?
I was told that unbinding the books might help?
Also, I was told that Abbyy FineReader shows the corrections with an image next
to the text, so how do you chooce the corrected text? Is it accessible with vo?

Thanks so much!
Rachel

This seems to be only sold outside the US as I couldn't find any drivers

If you search for "OS X" that should jump you to the various OSX

What are your experiences with scanners/driverless/drivers?

syntax of datadetectors

2011-09-20 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a syntax to note appointments so that ical can add
it automatically and completely.

What I mean:
in a mail is written:

example of appointment on 22/09/2011/10:00-11:30(2h){global}

explonation:
this should make a appointment with name: "example of appointment"
on 22/09/2011 from 10:00 until 11:30 with a alarm 2 hours before and this
appointment should be stored in the calendar with name "global".

I would be happy if someone knows about syntax , if it exists, to note a whole
appointment in one line.

I am looking forward to your answers.

best regards,
William

I totally agree here. DocuScan Plus is only for people who needs to scan texts
in english. Well, Serotek have told me that they might support other languages

I'll check out Finereader and see how well it works. I'm tired of using Vue

VueScan seems to work with any scanner that works with Image Capture, which
means any scanner that works with the Mac.

> Also, is there a type of scanner that works better with vuescan over another?
I don't think so. VueScan is primarily for scanning and manipulating images by
professionals, which is why it produces such beautiful scans.

> How do you do your books? Do you turn page by page, or you feed pages through?
I only have a simple flatbed scanner with no feed facility, so I scan books a
double-page at a time. I set VueScan to multi page and just keep turning pages
and scanning until the book is finished. Pretty tedious, but I can't afford
anything fancy.

Yes, especially if you have a scanner with automatic feed that scans both sides
of the page. My sighted husband can't bear to see books destroyed, so I just
break the spine viciously before scanning and he can live with that. Also,
keeping the book together avoids the risk of dropping all the pages and getting
them mixed up.

> Also, I was told that Abbyy FineReader shows the corrections with an image
> next to the text, so how do you chooce the corrected text?
Apparently, it shows an image that you can manipulate to place the text in the
right order, but this isn't accessible to VO. However, for books and magazine
articles, I find it gets the text in the right order anyway. Tables are a
different matter. It seems to put each column underneath the previous one. So,
you get the contents of the leftmost column, underneath that, the contents of
the column second from the left, and so on. That's when you choose the
Spreadsheet option.

Cheers,

Anne

2011-09-20 Thread Anne Robertson
hello Søren,

I agree that VueScan doesn't do very good OCR. I used it as a stopgap while
ABBYY FineReader wasn't available for Lion.

These days, I use VueScan for scanning and ABBYY FineReader for OCR.

Let me know if you want the setup guide to get this to work seamlessly.

Re: drivers for scanner

Hmmm. The drivers page for Mac for that scanner lists a Scanjet patch to
use osx 10.6 software and driver on osx 10.7

http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=377691&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=377689&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219

so I'm assuming that's what you need along with the original driver

Re: Question regarding home networking.

2011-09-20 Thread Chris Blouch
Likewise you can turn on SMB sharing on your Mac and then mount your mac
hard drive on your PC. Just depends on which way you want to go. For me
I use a Mac as a 'server' and mount it's drives on my PC. My PC,
currently XP, isn't backed up or anything since I just use it to test
stuff but the Mac is on Time Machine so anything I store there is
relatively safe.

Hi Allison,
One way to share files between windows 7, is what I think you have,
and a mac, can be done, but it is a 2-way configuration. I haven't
played much with accessing mac files from a windows computer, because
I always work on my mac since I have it. Because once you go mac,
you'll never go back. But the other way around is simple, as long as
you have some information collected beforehand. So I will describe how
to connect to a windows machine from one of your macs. The other way
back, how to connect from windows to a mac share, I don't have enough
experience with.

Before I tell you how you do it, here's what you are striving for to
begin with. On your windows pc, you have a share. This is something
like the my documents folder, an entire drive, or anything present for
that matter. On the mac side, you have your finder. Where you would go
into my network places on windows to find other computers, the mac
does it differently. On the desktop, and in some other places, once
you get file sharing working, you will have a new icon. If you open
it, you will be accessing your windows files. It is that simple, but
if you've never done it before, a little more to know before you have
it working.

To access your windows machine from a mac:
1. You need to know the network name of your windows pc that you want
to access. If you already have a network set up, this will be
familiar. If you don't know the windows computer network name of the
pc you want to get into from your mac, you will need is ip address. If
you don't know how to do one of these and you need it, let me know.
2. You need to have an account on the windows computer to log in to.
Because windows 7 is already set up on your side, you will indeed have
a user account, possibly with a password. When you work in windows 7,
you are logged in under your own account, that is usually created when
windows was set up.
You use the same name and password to log in to windows if you do it
over a network This is the name and password you will have to have
ready. If not, then you wil need to set up a password associated with
your user account on the windows pc, because without a password,
sharing will not work this way.
3. Now that you know the network name of the windows pc, and you have
a username and password, it is time to Connect. To do this, from your
mac, in the finder, hit command k. This is a keystroke belonging to
the go menu. It lets you connect to a server. From a mac perspective,
a file hoster like your windows pc is a file server. A dialog comes up.
4. In the text field that you land in, fill in the protocol and the
address of the windows pc and hit connect. The protocol that you
always want to use is smb, as in server message block. Don't worry
about what it is. The first five characters of the text to type in
here, is always: smb://. That is s, m, b, colon, slash, slash.
5. Now say, that the pc you want to log in to is called Allison. Then
the full line you type in is:

smb://Allison
That is all without spaces. So first s m b colon slash slash, those 5
characters, and then the pc name, Allison for this example.
6. You can now select, which shares from windows you want to see on
your mac. In this dialog on your mac, you may see somelike my
documents, drive d, etc.
Just select one or more from the list and confirm. I think there's
just a normal ok button.
7. Your windows share will now be mounted in finder. You can find it
on your desktop and you can open it with command down arrow, and close
it with command w.

Note: in windows 7, you may have to do a little bit more to set up
file sharing to be allowed than you would on an xp machine. From what
I understand, you have multiple windows machines. If one of them is
windows 7 and another is xp, and you can perfectly see your windows 7
files from an xp machine, then you can be sure that file sharing for
this win7 pc will also work from a mac.

Hth,
Paul.

Re: Nervous syncing my iPad

2011-09-20 Thread Chris Blouch
If I recall correctly the Nano uses pre-recorded audio files for all
text. Those pre-recorded spoken snippets are generated on your Mac using
your default voiceover voice selection, compressed down to mp3 and then
downloaded to your device. Depending on how many text bits are needed
this could indeed take quite a while the first time. I'm assuming if you
change your voice preference on the Mac it will re-render all the spoken
text recordings and download it all again. That said, Doug is correct
that the iPad, like the iPhone, has enough horsepower to do it's own
real text to speech synthesis and has no need of pre-recorded text audio
snippets.

a weird issue with Safari and Autio Highjack Pro

2011-09-20 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay, like this is really strange.

There are two web sites on which I cannot seem to record the streams using
Audio Hijack Pro. Those are:

www.ewtn.com
and click on the English page and from there, select the live radio broad band
stream. It plays just fine but Audio Highjack pro will not record it. It's a
WMA stream so I figured for sure that I could highjack QT. NO go. QT won't do
it either.

The other site is:

www.wrbh.org
and click the streaming link at the top left of the page. That's also a
Windows media stream; but, again, plays just fine but will not highjack either
using Safari or QT.

Note, I am running the click to flash extention. Disabling this seems not to
make a difference.

Any thoughts?

Good too is the built in graphing facility of a spreadsheet for any who

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi Anne and others.
I've just tried the latest demo of FineReader and I'm really surprised how well
the OCR works. It works really very well when converting into html, and
VOiceover reads all tables as shown on the paper. That's awesome!
I have some questions about the program:
1: Would it automatically rotate the image if the paper is placed wrong in the
scanner?
2: Is it possible to add Vue scan or Finereader to the menubar in Textedit like
Omnipage in Windows?
3: Why can't I access the preferences in FineReader? Because I'm running the
demo?
It looks as FineReader is really worth the money, but it's a shame it won't
work with my old Canoscan Lide. It's great that it ignores the watermarc from
Vuescan though. :)

Capchas and OCR?

2011-09-20 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folk,

I haven't tried this yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has tried to use
an OCR program to solve a capcha? Theoretically one could download the image
into a folder, and, say, open it in FineReader Express. or one could take a
screen-shot and open it in an OCR app.

Thoughts? Experiments? I will probably try this on my own in the
not-too-distant future.

Issues with a cannon scanner and windows xp

2011-09-20 Thread Matt Dierckens
Hi all,
I have a cannon lida 210 scanner.
When I first installed the drivers for it, it worked fine with Kurzweil on the
windows side as I have no scanning software for the mac.
Next time I go poug in my scanner, vmware comes up with this can't connect to
the host USB driver, windows will attempt to use a different host port or
something like that.
I hit ok, and the scanner makes a noise, then either a dialog comes up or
something but either way I can't use speech and have to restart the computer.
Anyone know why this might be?
Thanks

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Søren,

ABBYY FineReader for the Mac is an Express version and has no preferences.
However, I find it does a very good job for French and English, and it
automatically rotates the image if necessary.

Which Canoscan Lide have you got? I can make FineReader work with my Canoscan
Lide 110, but it's much messier and less effective than using VueScan to get
the images. Also, I haven't found a way to scan more than one page at a time
with FineReader, whereas VueScan can scan I don't know how many images into one
file, which FineReader can then OCR in one go. I find this an efficient way of
working.

As for adding either of them to the menu bar, this is a concept that is alien
to me. I've never used Windows so don't understand the question.

Cheers,

Anne

Apple Mail Problem

downloaded and some that won't download to the Mac at all. This is while I have
both mail programs open or not. This isn't a GMail account. It's my Verizon.net

finding my disappearing email ... or just fixing the problem of why my email

Then am I to assume that if you have never had Fusion on that machine you
still couldn't run Window-Eyes 7.5 with Fusion 4.01?

Thanks for this info. Do you know what happens if you create a new VM?
Also, if you don't update the tools, is the upgrade of any use?

Hi,

I just wanted to report that if you have a VM that was created with Fusion
version 3 Window-Eyes will work with this VM using fusion 4 as long as you
don't let fusion 4 upgrade the vm to fusion 4.

To be clear, I am not talking about the installation of fusion 4 vmware
tools. This happens automatically. What I am talking about is the fact
that
when you try to start up a vm that was created with fusion 3, fusion 4
will

ask to upgrade the vm. If you want Window-Eyes to continue working, do not
upgrade the vm.

I would totally agree with you. I do realize that some people need to scan
in other languages, but I get the strong impression that some on this list
have discounted DocuScan Plus way too far. If they would try it I think
that they would find that it has a lot to offer, and is an excellent choice
compaired to some of the off-the-shelf or website products that are more
regularly recommended that have far less to offer the blind user.

Hi,

If scanning in other languages is really a show stopper then I guess
DocuScan Plus is not for you. I am convinced, however, that it is the best
solution for english at the present time on the Mac. I encourage you to take
advantage of their free trial and see what you think.

I use DocuScan Plus with the HoverCam which is a portable camera that works
really well.

Also, is there a type of scanner that works better with vuescan over

How do you do your books? Do you turn page by page, or you feed pages

Also, I was told that Abbyy FineReader shows the corrections with an image

Abbyy FineReader can handle up to three languages in the one document and

I use VueScan to create the images as it does an excellent job, then I
have it set to hand over to ABBYY FineReader to do the OCR.

I scan a whole book at a time using VueScan, then ABBYY FineReader does
the OCR in one go.

You can't start reading the book until the OCR is finished.

The thing to remember about scanning and OCR, is that the output depends
on the quality of the input. You have to make sure that the scans are as
good as possible, which can be difficult when scanning a double-page of a
book at a time. I place a print dictionary on top of the scanner lid to
hold the book flat while scanning and get good results this way.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Anne and others.
I've just tried the latest demo of FineReader and I'm really surprised how
well the OCR works. It works really very well when converting into html, and
VOiceover reads all tables as shown on the paper. That's awesome!

I have some questions about the program:
1: Would it automatically rotate the image if the paper is placed wrong in
the scanner?
2: Is it possible to add Vue scan or Finereader to the menubar in Textedit
like Omnipage in Windows?
3: Why can't I access the preferences in FineReader? Because I'm running the
demo?
It looks as FineReader is really worth the money, but it's a shame it won't
work with my old Canoscan Lide. It's great that it ignores the watermarc
from Vuescan though. :)

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

I love Docuscan plus for it's features which works very well. It's just a shame
that you need the cloud based system to scan a page. Here in Europe we don't
have access to an internet connection all the time if we are in a confrence
where we get a peace of paper we beed to scan.
Regarding languages: I assume you only speak english . My standard language is
danish which is very different from english. We have some special letters which
an english OCR program simply won't recognize. If I scan a danish text, the
text will be readable most of the time, but the english OCR don't know any word
of the text, which means you'll simply get a bad result. It's like the same if
you use a danish spellchecker on a english document.
The Braille translation software in Docuscan is also an awesome feature which
might work well, but again, if you don't speak english everyday and primary
read texts in english, that feature is simply unusable. In other words: I won't
pay that much for an application which don't fit my needs.
having that said I'll say that I love the idea of DocuScan. The interface is
very easy to use, you get lots of great features and I like the way it shows
the result of the text. I said I don't liek the cloud based system. what I mean
is that it should be an option and not something you have to use.

Re: Scanning software like Kurzweil for the Mac?

2011-09-20 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi Anne.
Thanks much for your reply.
In Omnipage in Windows, you can configure it to pop up in the menubar in Word
or any other texteditor. that means you just open up your texteditor, go into
the menubar and choose scan. Omnipage will then open, scan the paper, put it in
your texteditor and then finally closes again so the only opened window is
still your texteditor. That feature is an awesome feature for people who aren't
very good at computers.
Regarding the preferences in Finereader I just got confused because I saw the
Preferences was dimmed.

Setting An Activity for Dashboard

2011-09-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey everyone. Has anyone tried to set an activity for Dashboard? I'm trying to
set it so that when I open Dashboard to read the weather, I would like Tom to
read the weather for my city? Can this be done?

Shawn

Re: Menu Navigation Issues - Help with checking a bug please

2011-09-20 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

I have had an opportunity to check the bug during my lunch break at our local
Apple store. I could reproduce the issue on both mac books and an iMac.

I was glad to see it wasn't just my machine but am annoyed that it does seem to
be an actual bug.

I would still appreciate it if someone else could reproduce it.

Thanks
