Voiceover spontaneously reverts to default settings
Dear Listers, At least once a day p- and increasingly more often than that - Voiceover on my Macbook air reverts spontaneously to its default settings, and i have to reenter my settings or else import them again.. It's becoming a bit of a bore as you can imagine if you are doing something else and suddenly you get high verbosity levels etc. Has anyone noticed that behaviour too, and has anyone written to Apple Accessibility about it? I have been trying to be aware of whether anything I do relates to these changes but I can't seem to find a pattern. Sometimes it seems to me that when I activate trackpad to use gestures with vo+rotor, it might happen but it doesn't happen every time. Other times, I will tap the trackpad or disconnect a usb device and Voiceover will change its settings. Thanks for any comments. And by the way, are you receiving my messages? Could anyone please confirm that my messages to the list are coming through? Re: Voiceover spontaneously reverts to default settings
Yes, and yes to both questions. I haven't had my settings reset themselves in quite some time though. Even when the problem was at its worse, It happened maybe 3 times in the space of a month. I never experienced the problem with the frequency your reporting. In short, that sucks. I'm confident Apple is aware of this problem though. I know quite a few on the list has reported this bug. Thanks, Ricardo, I hope Apple is going to fix the spontaneous reverts in the next version of their operating system. Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over
Hello Zack, and thanks for responding. Right now, the only way I know of to get to the offline contacts is to do precisely what you suggested. I knew about this option, but logging off and then logging back on, just to get to all of one's contacts, seems arduous, to say the least. Then, there is also the issue of being able to reach someone during another call whose status is set to appear offline, though, in actuality, they are really online. In terms of interacting with the toolbar and the Conversation Menu, I have tried this but have not been successful. While it is possible to do many things from within the Conversation Menu, turning off and on the video camera is not one of them, nor can this be accomplished from the Toolbar. If you go into the Skype preferences, you will most definitely find an option for allowing your camera to automatically start when you place a call. However, this still doesn't give you the ability to turn on and off the video camera at will. In my particular situation, this is a show stopper. Back to the initial login screen: I really like it because it allows you to right arrow between possible actions for the individual whose Skype name is currently showing in the contact list. I am wondering if there is an approach to making this screen appear whenever the need arises, instead of just when one has logged on.. Thank you very much for your kind response, and my best to you. Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over
Dear Simon, Thanks for responding. In my case, it is imperative, during a conversation, to be able to turn the camera on and off at will. If I were to use the camera merely as a hobby adjunct, this problem wouldn't be worth discussing. However, this is a real need in my case. Hello Colin, I have tried your suggestion on several occasions while sharing my screen with sighted assistance. Although my sighted friend could see the video camera icon, I couldn't get to it with VO. I remember doing something once that got me there but, unfortunately, had just been trying a lot of things without documenting each attempt and, as a result, couldn't reproduce my one and only success. Michael: There is a video button in the call window that lets you start/stop video. It took a bit of playing around to find it. At least in my case. VO wasn't automatically showing me all of the contents of my window until i interacted with and manipulated one of the splitters. Nowe, once I set it to reveal the whole window's contents, they are reliably there. I can be more help to you when i'm home again and in front of a mac. John, thank you. So if I understand you correctly, during the course of a conversation, you were able to turn on and off the web camera at will? Was this an option in the Conversation Menu? Which splitter did you move, and do you remember what value you set it to? I am wondering if VO provides a way to let the user know when nothing is being covered or cut off by the splitters. Hi John! I found your suggestion interesting so I had a look on mine! I could only find one splitter and when I moved it from about 40% to 90% and then back to 65% and a couple of others! When I went back to the main window there was no change to my view! So I was wondering if either of you have your Skype in list mode? And as I suggested to Mike I think you have to do everything inside the contacts list! So if I'm right interact with contacts and stay there! Go to the name you want and call! And if you want to add someone just go to there name and call them as well! I do not know if this is right [haven't had the chance to try it] But could be the answer! And I think this might apply to turning on and off camera! And have you updated to 5.1.0914? This gives a tab for both Skype and address book options! All the best Colin Qapla! Hello Colin, As far as the version of Skype I am using, it is indeed 5.1.0914. Your suggestion is good, but it's not quite what I am looking for. During a Skype conversation, I need to be able to turn the camera on and off at a moment's notice. Initiating a call with the camera being on has never been an issue or problem. I need to be able to accomplish turning the web camera on and off during the course of a conversation. I have never gotten the hang of sound flower
Hi good people. I will receive my Vestax Spin tomorrow, then there will be a lot of playing going on, i'm sure. Someone on this list, i think it was Yuma talked about a way to route Voiceover via Soundflower to the cuing channel of ... DJay? The Vestax unit? i have installed Soundflower but have never gotten the hang of what this is, how to use it and how to set it up. Do i need programs, apps or other devices to do whatever you do with Sound flower? What can be done with it and of course how? How do i decide what goes where? In other words, i don't know the first thing about Sound flower but would really like to know as much as possible, so please if you have an answer step up and shed some light for a confused soul.:-) Thanks a lot. /Krister -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Krister. >From what I can see when I read about this unit it is a soundcard in itself >and in Djay you can select the device to use as the main and pre listening so >I think you can leave the system sound on the mac and let v o do it's talk >there and let the music from djay go over the Spin. I don't get the idea behind soundflover too. About djay so are there some issues I have. There are a lot of checkboxes that don't have labels, the help tag still work so I can figer them out. There is also a table wich I think includes categories of for example artists but there is only "unknown" items in that table. If I select a song and in the context menu select "load on table 1" I can't get it to play from table 1. Maybe that's not v o issues but the man behind the keyboard thats the problem :). I'm going to try it more later. So maybe it works better with the controler you are about to try. Good luck with your new gadgets. Question About Downloading Podcasts
Hello listers, I just subscribed to a podcast. I know that iTunes will download the latest episode. I see a list of "undownloaded" podcasts within the podcast itself. How exactly do I ensure iTunes downloads those episodes, without me going into the iTunes store, searching for the podcast, and manually downloading the missing episodes? Any help is appreciated. Sample lab help needed
Hi everyone, I have received a very positive mail from the developers of sample lab who have confirmed they Will be implementing further accessibility in their sample lab sequencer/beat box on ipad for their next update. They have also asked me to investigate every aspect of the app for any lacks of accessibility, and have provided me with necessary promo codes to do this. If anyone here is interested in working with me on analyzing the app, please contact me off list to get the promo code and test the app out from which point we will make a detailed report on what other features are required for the visually impaired. Some requirements: You need to own an ipad or ipad2 preferably -Optionally, having a currently compatible LPD8 from akaï will be helpful to test and report on functions which can be further assigned to the midi controller. This would require a camera connection kit. I am really inspired by the great response from the devver, and since this would eventually be the only accessible sequencer/beat box on the ipad, i am confident this would be a great addition for music heads. Hi Christine -- I guess I'm not surprised. While I managed to get it working on mine using those steps, accessing flash content on the Mac is awfully difficult. In step 10, which did you use: The mouse keys, a trackpad or a mouse? When you moved the mouse cursor to the VO cursor and started moving the mouse to the left, did you hear anything at all while moving the mouse cursor? Also, did you hear back from the website regarding their use of flash? Bryan On Mar 29, 2011, at 6:00 PM, Christine Grassman wrote: > My frustration continues. Re: Introducing myself, and a couple of questions
Hi Gail, Ashley's response regarding the older Mac Mini should work for you as far as opening it up. I think the tool she was referring to is a putty knife. Also, there are lots of websites that list the compatible RAM and hard drives. My personal favorite is Other World Computing at www.macsales.com. On that site, select the link labeled "Memory, RAM, SD." Then select Mac Mini and then Mac Mini 2007 - 2008. There you will find more specs and options for RAM and hard drive upgrades. A quick look shows that model can physically accept up to 4 GB RAM but is limited to addressing up to 3 GB of that RAM. HTH, Bryan On Mar 29, 2011, at 11:08 AM, Gail the U. S. Re: Unlabeled Flash Player Buttons on http://bitesizeirish.com [Was, Re: Two unrelated inquiries: Garage band accessibility and unlabeled Flash Player buttons on Web site]
I did just write to the Web site again, asking about the possibility of an alternative to Flash. I wish I had more info or suggestions, but I am not tech-savvy with such things. As for trying to access the content, first I tried my track pad. I have a MacBook with a track pad. All it did after I followed all steps (I believe!) was say various things such as "desktop" and various text on the site. I don't have an external mouse, so I then tried to use mouse keys. I hit the option key quickly five times, but did not receive any feedback from VO, so have no idea if it took. There was also no feedback when I told click to flash to load flash content from the screen. When I hit vo command 5 (plus function), VO stated the word I was on, which was one of the numbers. When I looked through VO commands, the only mouse commands I found were Mouse Up and Mouse Down and simply Mouse. When I ttried these, there was a definitive click, but no VO response. I tried hitting the left and right arrows along with the other keys (a rather unwieldy feat), but again received no feedback. I suspect strongly that either a lack of info from VO and/or clueless user error is responsible for my lack of success. :) Christine On Mar 29, 2011, at 7:02 PM, Bryan Jones wrote: > Hi Christine -- I guess I'm not surprised. Re: forward delete on the apple bluetooth keyboard
Hi Mary, If you are using the Apple WIreless Keyboard with the Mac, then the commands for editing changes are just the same as a Mac laptop user would make, and you can verify this by turning on keyboard help mode (VO-K), pressing the key combinations, and listening to what VoiceOver announces before exiting this mode by pressing the escape key. Press the Fn key in combination with the arrow keys: Fn+Left Arrow = Home Fn+Right Arrow = End Fn+Up Arrow = Page Up Fn+Down Arrow = Page Down These Fn key combinations do not work under iOS when you use the Apple Wireless Keyboard paired to an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. In fact, a good hint that, at least initially, the Fn key was not meant to be part of the standard shortcut combinations for iOS 3.2 and 4.x, is the absence of an "Fn" key on the keyboard of the iPad Keyboard Dock. The bottom row of keys is otherwise identical for this keyboard and the Apple Wireless Keyboard. To forward delete a charcter with the Apple Wireless Keyboard (on the Mac) press Fn+Delete. To forward delete a word (on the Mac), press Fn+Option+Delete. These are all shortcut commands that are part of Mac OS X and work independently of VoiceOver in all Cocoa apps (which means most of the standard apps you work with, such as TextEdit, Mail, etc.). When you use your Apple Wireless Keyboard (or other Bluetooth keyboard) paired to an iOS device many of the combinations described in my archived post on "Moving and Selecting in Cocoa Apps" will work: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg02038.html I'll paste in a part of this below. However, I'll add that since the original post and the extension to Bluetooth keyboard usage for the iOS devices, you can use either the Control key or the Command key in some of these combinations (for moving to the beginning or end of a line, or the beginning or end of a document, for example). I suspect this was done to accommodate Bluetooth keyboards that have no Command key. In fact, for earlier versions of iOS 4.0.x and 4.1.x, in keyboard help mode for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, VoiceOver would not announce the commands for moving to the start or end of the line, etc. whne you used the Command key in place of the Control key, although it would perform the action. On the iOS devices the way I would perform a foward delete by one or more words with the Apple Wireless Keyboard is to press the Shift key along with the Right Arrow and Option keys and then press "Delete". You'll hear VoiceOver announce the selected text (e.g. press Shift, Option, and tap the right arrow key while continuing to press the Shift and Option keys to extend your selection by words, then use the Delete key to delete your selection.) HTH. Excerpted selection from longer archived post that details more ways to move and edit is pasted from the archived link: Control-a moves you to the beginning of a line Control-e moves you to the end of a line but you might have an easier time remembering their counterparts with the Command key and the arrow keys: Command-Left arrow moves you to the beginning of a line Command-Right arrow moves you to the end of a line These key commands work independent of VoiceOver -- they're shortcuts built into the Cocoa structure and are used by everyone -- not just VoiceOver users. You can put together most of the sequences to move that use the Command, Option, and arrow keys, with corresponding sequences to select by simply holding down the Shift key when you execute the commands: command+up arrow move to beginning of the document shift+command+up arrow select to the beginning of the document command+down arrow move to the end of the document shift+command+down arrow select to the end of the document command+left arrow move to the beginning of the line shift+command+left arrow select to the beginning of the line command+right arrow move to the end of the line shift+command+right arrow select to the end of the line option+right arrow move one word to the right shift+option+right arrow select one word to the right option+left arrow move one word to the left shift+option+left arrow select one word to the left option+up arrow move to the beginning of the paragraph shift+option+up arrow select to the beginning of the paragraph option+down arrow move to the end of the paragraph shift+option+down arrow select to the end of the paragraph up arrow move up from present position shift+up arrow select upward down arrow move down from present position shift+down arrow select downward Cheers, Esther Mar 29, 2011, at 12:06 PM, Mary Otten wrote: As there is no "sixpack" of keys containing things like insert, delete, page up, down etc, on the Apple bluetooth keyboard, I am wondering how one does a forward delete on that keyboard. Hey just purchased the I-Work package or whatever it is. I have a textbook that I need to read for my Intro to Computers class and I've noticed that when pressing the VO+A hotkey to read all, it doesn't necessarily read all. It'll read 10 or 15 paragraphs and then it'll stop. I can send someone off list a chapter of the text I'm reading to see what I mean. Re: Voice Over and Pages
Sean, Try one of these: 1. In Pages, open the document. Press Command-P to bring up the print dialog box. Navigate to the PDF menu and choose save as PDF…. Type a filename and choose a location. Switch to the Finder and open the document in Preview and press VO-A to read the entire document without interruption. 2. If it is a DOC file, open it in TextEdit and read it that way. As far as I know, the Say All command does work in textEdit, so long as you do it as soon as you open the document. This has been my experience, anyway. Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over
Hi Mike, That's just it. The screen shouldn't appear only when you log on, it should be a fairly constant companion throughout. Are you using the VO cursor to explore the Skype window? If your version is the same as mine, you should see a Source List on the left, a splitter, and then something on the right which changes depending on the source selected on the left. If that source is "Contacts", your offline and online contacts should show up on the right. Note that the labels of online or offline only seem to appear when using the VO cursor keys to navigate. You'll need to interact with the list, of course. As I said, I'm not very familiar with video. I know it is possible to turn it on and off during a call, as I've occasionally seen the options for doing so, but am not sure of precisely where they are. I would investigate the splitter suggestions made by others. Best, Zack. Re: forward delete on the apple bluetooth keyboard
Hi Mary, I guessed you wanted to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard paired to your iPad or iPod touch for text editing, which is why I wrote the reply in two sections: one outlining behavior when paired to the Mac under OS X 10 (only, covering the Fn key combinations) and one part that was generally applicable. I gave the example of forward deleting by words, because that's less obvious, but if you want to forward delete by characters use the same principle: hold down the Shift key as you tap the right arrow key in order to select and advance by character, then press the delete key to delete your selected text. Selection of text can be by character, word, line, or to the end of the document, and you can change the unit of selection as long as you continue to hold down the Shift key. So, for example, if I want to forward delete two words and the first two characters at the start of the next word I can press the Shift and Option keys and tap the right arrow key twice (which will select and highlight the next two words), then I can release the Option key (while still pressing the Shift key) and tap the right arrow key two more times (which will select the first two letters of the next word). When I press the delete key, my entire selection will be deleted. To undo the deletion I can press Command+Z. To redo the deletion I can press Command+Shift+Z. One thing to keep in mind (that was explained in the link to the longer archived post) is that selections may be made in either the forwards or backwards direction -- and if you move past the original insertion point in the opposite direction, you undo the selection. So, for example, if I press the Shift key and the Option key, then tap the right arrow twice, I have selected the two words following the position of the insertion point. If I press the delete key at this point, I remove those two words. If, however, I continue to hold down the Shift and Option key and then tap the Left arrow key three times, the first two taps move back over my original selection, and undo them. At the end of the first tap of the left arrow key, I've undone the selection of the second word. After the second tap with the left arrrow key, I've undone all my selection, and am back where I started. When I tap the left arrow key for the third time (all the while holding down the Shift and Option keys), I move to the left of the original insertion point. I have now selected the word before my original insertion point, and when I press delete this word is now deleted. You can also extend your selections to encompass several lines by simply holding down the Shift key and tappng your down arrow (or up arrrow). It's easiest to do this at the beginning of a line, because otherwise your arrow may move your selection to the middle of a word in a later line. One further thing to keep in mind if you use a paired Bluetooth keyboard with an iOS device and change input keyboard languages with Command+Space: VoiceOver will only announce languages with non-Roman letters if your language rotor is set to the "Default" voice. If Russian is one of my selected input keyboard languages, and I have the voice set to Karen, the Australian voice, although my default region is the U.S., I will not hear VoiceOver announce anything when I switch to a Russian input keyboard with Command+Space. The same goes for any other language with non-Roman characters -- Greek, Chinese, etc. I'll only hear VoiceOver announce these input language keyboards when I press Command+Space if I have switched to the Default voice in the language rotor -- otherwise there is just a silence. If you never change your input language to a keyboard which does not use Latin characters then this will not be an issue for you. But since you do use a Russian voice on your Mac, this might come up as a problem for you if you try to type Cyrillic characters. There's both a setting for the standard Russian input keyboard and one that is phonetically based (where the letters you type correspond to their closest English counterparts -- so that for "yes" you would press the "d" and "a" keys, instead of the letters that would be the "l" and "f" keys on an English input keyboard, for example.) Of course, after you switch to a Russian input keyboard with Command+Space, you would want to switch to a Russian voice, as well Hope this is not too confusing. Esther, your posts are always a source of amazing in depth information. I don't know how you remember all this stuff, but I am grateful that you do. If you ever write a memory book, I'll be first in line to buy it. Re: Safari issues
Hi Zach: Thanks for your reply. I do use cmd+l to load pages also. I think that the worst problem I have is when I am loading links from pages that are already open. Also, on Facebook in particular, I have a heck of a time going past the latest news page. I have turned the load images feature off in the VO web settings which helped with some of the sites, but now when loading certain pages like the AP news pages, it will only show the tabs opened and I have to use the reader, which is fine in most cases, to read an article. I don't know what might happen though when it can't find the text, which happens sometimes. Perhaps the page I was trying to load from Google had some problems, but VO kept saying name of the link and pressed. If I wanted to go somewhere in a page that loads just showing the tab, I don't quite know what I would do. When I try to activate the tab with vo/spacebar it simply says the name of the tab pressed. My computer knows I am complaining as VO just crashed while writing this message. :) Sometimes I just wish things would work as they are supposed too.
