You must be using a desktop machine. On all the laptops I've had, I've been
able to hold down the Command and Option keys with my left thumb, the R key
with my left middle finger, the P key with my right thumb and the Power button
with my right middle finger.

On a desktop machine, you would have to move the keyboard close to the Power
button to be able to do this alone.

I don't think so. I always hear the chimes.

> How does one know that it actually worked?
Hearing the chimes tells you that it's working and if problems go away that
didn't go away with just a restart, then that's more evidence that it's worked.

Anne

can't wait to don the tron shoes

2010-12-02 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi list,

This might, to some point have accessibility and apple mixed in it, but i just
wanted to express my mad wait for the adidas tron shoes. Orion elastomeric
light fabric stitched to some probably awesome looking sport shoes.

So where does accessiblity come into this? Well, light and glow means i can
walk in the dark and look like a mobile AFP server or something.

And what about the inclusion or relation with apple? Tron is disney, disney is
steve jobs, steve jobs is apple :)

Ps: does anyone know when tron is coming out?

Re: The Resetting of Prams

2010-12-02 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Ann,

I have a laptop. I tried the combination of fingers you suggested. I held
down all 5 keys. What I heard as I was holding down the keys was the buzzing
sound and the startup sound over and over. I finally let go of the keys and
the system booted. I never hear what I would consider to be a chime, just the
normal startup sound. So I'm guessing this has not worked yet for me?

Maybe I have to be more specific. What I need and I am looking for is an
accessible Usenet client with accessible graphical user Interface. The woman I
am helping is making her switch from Windows to MacOsX; under windows she was
used to manage e-mails, RSS Feeds and usenet with mozilla Thunderbird. Playing
with terminal windows may not be very advisable, right now! :-)

You hold down the Command, Option, R and P keys but just press the Power button
once. Sorry I didn't make that clear in the first place.

Subject: Handy Tech Braille Support for Apple Portible Devices

Hello Folks,

with the release of Apple's iOS 4.21 the Handy Tech Braille displays are
supported via Bluetooth. Now you have access to your iPod Touch, iPad and
iPhone (3 GS and 4).

all models of Braille Wave and Braille Star 40 equipped with Bluetooth are
supported. With Easy Braille and Braillino you need to update the
Bluetooth chip if your product was manufactured prior to the following
serial numbers:

Braillinos from serial number 09308
Easy Brailles from serial number 09124.

Previously, the BraillIno and EasyBraille used a bluetooth chip that was
and still is well supported by several Windows screen readers and devices;
however, for reasons too complicated to go into here, Apple has elected
not to support this module at this time.

United States and Canadian Customers who have a BraillIno or EasyBraille
with the older module may now have these devices updated to the newer
Bluetooth module for $300. If you are not interested in using your
BraillIno or EasyBraille with one of the Apple portable devices, the
update is not necessary.

As always, please feel free to contact Handy Tech North America at:

651-636-5184

or by e-mail at:

i...@handytech.us

should you have any questions about the Bluetooth update or any of the
adaptive technology solutions we offer.

Sincerely,

Earle Harrison
President
Handy Tech North America

Thats true. This one was shipped from China or just outside of Hong Kong. Once
the update was applied, it worked like gang busters. Now I just have to figure

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-02 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Kevin,

I've always been curious as to what the TV is really for. I want one just to
have one, but since Denmark doesn't even have movies anymore much less rentals,
I'm not sure it'd even be useful.

I'm tempted to buy one just to have one, but not sure if it'd even be worth it
for me. I guess by the time we finally get an accessible TV that talks, I'd be
happy. I like channels more than renting my movies. I don't mind renting at
all, but sometimes, I just like to flick through channels and attempt to find
something that isn't garbage.

Hi Yuma:
I guess unless your fingers are doing the walking and they're wearing the

Small Preview Issue

Hello list:
I am having a small Preview issue. When I go to the image sidebar and select a
page to read and then go back to the text box and interact with the current
text of the page I get sent back to the page I was previously reading. Has
anyone else noticed this? How did you go about fixing it?

Thanks,

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-02 Thread Kevin Mattingly
If you get netflicks at some point in time, you'll be in great shape. That
really makes a difference for me. An apple TV just gives you a few more options
and you can operate it from a remote on your TV. My biggest issue now is that
the remote wants to interact with my mini too, so I have to watch hitting enter
on the remote or I'll have music and movies going at the same time.

What Apps for Blind iPhone User?

2010-12-02 Thread M AUSTEN
Hi,
I'd like to thank all those who answered my question about changing the voice
on the iPhone 3GS.
I now have my new iPhone and am looking for Apps. I've had a look at Digit-Eyes
and a navigation package.
Does anyone have any suggestions for other Apps they have found useful.
Many thanks,

With these settings, Preview is working fine for me.

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-02 Thread Neil James
I can't give to much info yet because our Dish service won't be installed
until Saturday, but the latest generation of Dish DVR boxes will give you
complete control via the Dish iPhone app. If you have an iPhone or iPod
touch that is. You can search for programs set recordings and even locate
and start playback of programs which are stored on your dvr all from your I
device. I will report more after Saturday if people are interested.

Just to expand on this,

DirectTV is a different type of thing. Apple TV lets you aggregate your
digital media on to your TV where something like a DirecTV or Dish box
grabs live content over the air or from space.

Re: What Apps for Blind iPhone User?

2010-12-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Mark,

My favourite iPhone app is Kobo. It is an accessible eReader with a very good
catalogue of books at reasonable prices. The setup process is a bit
complicated, but once it's done, reading is easy.

Another useful app is Voxie voice recorder. You can start and stop recording
just by shaking the iPhone.

Cheers,

Anne

Could you elaborate a bit more on this? We are switching from direct tv and

Same with Direct TV, and I don't even need an ethernet cable. I can send
content to my kitchen or living room receiver.

Just to expand on this,

DirectTV is a different type of thing. Apple TV lets you aggregate your
digital media on to your TV where something like a DirecTV or Dish box
grabs live content over the air or from space.

Reading Tables in Pages

2010-12-02 Thread Phil
Hi,

Am having real trouble accessing data tables in Pages with voiceover -
the file in question is a MS Word 2007 file which I created at work
and which has a table in it which I created. I'm needing to work on
this file at home using my MBP with Pages 09 however I can't seem to
get VO to interact with the table or even tell me it's there. I've
tried the help file but not much there, anyone got any suggestions or
suggestions for what I should do?

Many thanks as ever,

Phil

Re: Reading Tables in Pages

2010-12-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

The table in your document will show up as a highlighted space in Pages.
Clipboard this item and paste it into a Numbers document where you'll be able
to work on it.

When you're done, select the table and copy it to the clipboard, then paste it
back into your Pages document.

Yes, this is messy, but it works. I hope Apple fix this problem soon.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: question on how to move the mouse

2010-12-02 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Another option

1. Turn on speak mouse after a delay (see previous message)
2. Set VO tracking options so that VO follows mouse instead of mouse
ffollows VO.
3. Turn off trackpad commander if using trackpad.4. Use the mouse if
you hover over an item for a small amount of time, it should read it
to you. I haven't played with this for about a year, but there might
be issues if the VO cursor is following the mouse and the the
Insertion point is following the VO cursor. In all likelyhood, whenyou
move the mouse you will lose the place you were typing if you were
typing. Gee, I wonder if HOT SSspots and AppleScripting of UI could
solve this problem... Something like on mouse move... If it has been
greater then X minutes since last mouse move then save VO position in
hotspot 9.

If this could be implemented, then one could easily SNAP back to the
insertion point.

Very interesting, too bad I haven't the time to figure out the UI
elemenTs of AppleScript.

Re: question on how to move the mouse

Thank you Anne. I will try that.
On Dec 1, 2010, at 11:52 PM, Anne Robertson wrote:

Hello Marlaina,

To move the mouse to places that VO cannot reach, you need to turn on
MouseKeys. This is done in System Preferences under Universal Access. Select
the fourth tab, Mouse & Trackpad, and just to the right you'll find MouseKeys.

You have to hold down the FN key to use the K, U, I, O, and 8 keys to control
the mouse when MouseKeys is on.

You also need to check the Speak text under mouse after delay check box in the
Announcements tab of the Verbosity category in the VoiceOver Utility.

Cheers,

Re: The Resetting of Prams

2010-12-02 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I would not worry too much about PRAM's. I have no Apple evidence of
the below message, but I can certainly believe it. Though I suppose
that Apple might have updated the key sequence some to clear out other
nasty issues I don't expect that to be the case.

Begin Qote from Tidbits.com discussion in 2009
On Subject of Grey screen and no boot of Macintosh computers

(And just FYI, the days of resetting PRAM / NVRAM doing anything
useful pretty much died with OS9. These days, about the only thing
that lives there is display resolution settings, so zapping the PRAM
may be useful for troubleshooting video issues, but it is unlikely to
help with anything else. Harmless to try, but meaningless if nothing
improves, because nothing really uses it anymore.)

Re: What Apps for Blind iPhone User?

2010-12-02 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
I do not find digit eyes useful; I'm pretty good with picture taking in
general, but I cannot make this thing find a bar code no matter what the heck I
do.

I like an app called around me; it will list out businesses around your current
location.

I also like four square; it's a fun app to see where your pals are and let them
see where you are.

I use MLB at bat to listen to baseball and o o tunes to listen to radio.

Because I don't know your interests, I won't take up more time with other more
specific apps on my phone, but there are lots of great choices out there.

Same with Direct TV, and I don't even need an ethernet cable. I can send

Anne,

when you say clipboard the table, do you simply mean do command c to copy it?

Clipboard this item and paste it into a Numbers document where you'll be able

When you're done, select the table and copy it to the clipboard, then paste it
back into your Pages document.

Yes, this is messy, but it works. I hope Apple fix this problem soon.

Hello Carolyn,

Here in Europe, we can't get most of the books that are available in the US on

Part of the problem for me is that I'm in France but I prefer to read in

Finding and navigating to text in documents on the iDevices [was Re: finding text and getting to it quickly]

2010-12-02 Thread Esther

Hi All,

I'll cc this reply to the macvisionaries list, because I think it is of general
interest, and also because this will let me easily find and link to an archived
post if there are further questions/discussion on the viphone list.

Dean Martineau asked about finding and quickly going to text on an iPhone:
I'd like to be able to do two things: (a) search

a folder for text found in a document and see a list of documents
containing that text; when I open the desired document, the screen
focus is on the found text, and VoiceOver tracks the focus. I don't
think that one is possible. or: (b) I manually open a document,
search for text I know is found within it, and screen and VoiceOver
focus on the found text. I would prefer this work with text
documents, but I can deal with most any file format.

and Annie Skov Nielsen  replied:

The only program it works in is ibooks. therefore I am using that program much.

It's possible to do what Dean wants for text in the Simplenote app by Codality.
You can type in search terms and the app will list the notes with matching
text, and let you immediatley go to the first found instance of a match in your
selected note, and then find the next match and navigate to it, all under
accessible VoiceOver control. I've been recommending this app on this list for
about a year, and the developers continued to add great features. Since I'm
pressed for time, I won't repeat everything again, except to forestall the
people who want note apps that specialize in formatting and specifically focus
on creating Microsoft Office Word Documents -- this is not that sort of app;
Simplenote focuses on simple text and content, and working with this as fast
and efficiently as possible in synced fashion across your iDevices.  The iPad
implementation of this app is a particularly nice in making efficient use of
the layout possibilities of the larger device, but I'll focus on how this works
on the iPhone, where a few more steps are required to switch and access options.

Locating notes with words that match all your search terms has always been possible in Simplenote from the beginning: on the "All Notes" screen you simply flick right
past the "Add" button for creating new notes to the search field to type in the terms you want, then run your finger down the list of notes that match results and double
tap to select the one you want to view.  Now, instead of flicking right from the heading of your selected note to have VoiceOver start reading the complete entry, just move your
finger down from the note heading.  The line at the top of the screen is the first match in that note to any of the search terms you typed in.  If you move your finger to the
bottom left corner of the screen, you'll hear VoiceOver announce two buttons: "BTN prior" and "BTN next". Double tap the "BTN next" button to find
the next instance of a match, and then touch the top of the screen just below the note heading to read the match.  If you want to start reading from that point, do a two-finger
flick down.  Either touch the bottom of the screen, just to the right of the "prior" and "next" buttons, and directly above the "Home" button, or
flick right from the "prior" and "next" find buttons for a summary of the search terms in use and, to have this announced by VoiceOver.

A few comments: if you search on more than one word or part of word, you'll only get matches to
notes that use all your search terms.  However, when you use the buttons to find the next or prior
match to a search term, you'll be advanced to the next  occurrence of any of your search words in
the note.  So if your search was a two word phrase that often occurs together, it will seem as
though you're picking up the same line twice, because the find action will pick up the first word
in the phrase, and highlight it, and then pick the next word in the same phrase and highlight it,
but you'll still be on the same line in the note, and won't appear to have advanced.  However, if
individual word matches to your search terms appear in the note, it's quite obvious that double
tapping "BTN next" moves you to a different part of the file.  Once again, you can always
get to the matched line by simply touching the top of the screen, since the app will scroll through
the display of your note to insure that the match is the first visible line on the screen.  That's
why you need to touch the screen instead of just flicking to have VoiceOver start reading the
entire note. I'm not sure how this would work for navigation via keyboard control unless Apple
implements shortcut sequences for "first visible element" on an iPhone screen, etc. the
way that they do on the Mac

Normally, the order of listing files is most recently modified first.  However, Simplenote now lets you "pin" the notes that you most frequently view to the top of the list.  On the iPhone you need to get out of the current
screen in order to access this function.  Double tap

Locating the function key on a USB keyboard

2010-12-02 Thread Marc Workman
Hi all,

I bought my first Mac today, and I've run into a snag turning VO on.

I tried command F5, but it only made a bonking noise. My guess is that the
function keys are controlling hardware, and I need to press the function key
plus command F5, but I don't know which key is the function key. I'm using a
full size USB keyboard that I bought along with the Mac mini today.

If you can tell me where the function key is, or if you have any other
suggestions, I would be very appreciative.

Best,

Marc

VoiceOver resetting problem

2010-12-02 Thread Austin Seraphin
Something very strange just happened. While browsing in Safari, Voiceover
suddenly reset. I mean, the speech reset, I had to set the rate etc. as I like
it. I even had to reenable the numpad and trackpad commanders. I use the latest
Safari 5.0.3 and it happened while
browsinghttp://senderogroup.com/support/supportiphone.htm ironically enough. I
just thought I'd bring it up and see if this has happened to anyone else.

Re: VoiceOver resetting problem

2010-12-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Austin,

Unfortunately, this is a well-known problem but it is totally unpredictable.
For that reason, most of us save our VoiceOver Preferences somewhere so that we
can reinstate them quickly when the problem strikes.

I think this is a very difficult bug to track down, as is the VoiceOver
suddenly going silent one.

Cheers,

Anne

Handytech is supported with the new Iphone IOS 4 Update

2010-12-02 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi everyone,

Isaac's message reminded me to tell you that the Braillino is now supported on
the Iphone! I was so excited to add it as a display the other day. It loses
connectivity sometimes, I have to power the Iphone off and back on again,
before it will connect. To have this added support is great, now all I need is
a bluetooth keyboard, smile. Have a great day.

Syncing addressbook from Iphone to Mac

2010-12-02 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

Do you know if you can sync the addressbook from your iphone to your Mac? I
know you can do it the other way around. The last time I tried this, the
numbers that I only had stored on my Iphone disappeared and wouldn't show up on
the Mac. Any ideas? I have a few new contacts on my Iphone that are not in my
Mac's addressbook. If I sync will I lose them? I'm using the Iphone 3gS in case
that makes a difference. Have a wonderful day!

Happily,
Allison

can't get voiceover going after an installation

2010-12-02 Thread Marc Workman
Hello again,

I wasn't able to get voiceover running on my new Mac Mini, so I decided to just
install, or perhaps reinstall, the OS. The installation went fine, but after
the restart, I'm still not able to get VO going using either command F5,
control command F5, or function command F5. I also tried pressing enter after
a restart, since one of the archive post mentioned something about having to
choose the setup language first, but no go. Every keystroke seems to produce a
bonking sound.

I've listened to a couple of podcasts of installations for both Lepard and Snow
Lepard, and in both cases, some music started playing after the restart
following the installation, but that didn't happen in my case.

Apologies for the nuby question, but I can't find an answer in anything I've
read or listened to.

TIA

Marc

dvd play on the mac

2010-12-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hello all,

A few days back, I asked about playing dvds on the Mac and somebody helpfully
stated that the dvd player that comes with the Mac is accessible. It does have
lots of shortcuts, which is great. Of course, the dvd menus themselves don't
speak. I guess they are graphics. So my question is, how can you reliably
navigate the dvd menu. You get to it with command d. The help file says arrow
keys highlight, but I've found it very hit and miss as regards say arrowing
down 2 pressing enter and always ending up in the same place, i.e. starting the
same episode of a multi-episode dvd. Sometimes, nothing happens. Sometimes, I
can hit command d and do nothing and the intro music starts playing and another
press of connand d shuts it off. That's with no arrow movement. Other times,
command d followed by a couple or 3 down arrows does nothing. It all seems
quite random, hit and miss. So how do you work with dvds reliably?

Re: musicality

2010-12-02 Thread starkos
I'm Jason Perkins, the author of Musicality. I just wanted to pop in
and let you know that I saw this thread, and I'll take a look at the
issues you've raised.

Those keyboard shortcut controls that are coming up as "unknown" are
provided by a third-party library, which happens to be open source, so
I might be able to fix it.

As far as navigating within the various services (Pandora,
Grooveshark), I'm at the mercy of their websites, at least for now. I
do have a search feature in the works which would allow you to select
a playlist or create a station right from an OS X menu (much like
Spotlight search) instead of navigating the websites.

I am very open to feedback of any kind. I don't want to spam the list,
so feel free to contact me at supp...@industriousone.com with any
questions or suggestions. Thanks for bringing these issues to my
attention, and I hope you enjoy the software!

No, I can't initiate playback with this app but I am going to search and see
if there is another app for directtv like the one for dish; I never thought

Same with Direct TV, and I don't even need an ethernet cable. I can send
content to my kitchen or living room receiver.

Just to expand on this,

DirectTV is a different type of thing. Apple TV lets you aggregate your
digital media on to your TV where something like a DirecTV or Dish box
grabs live content over the air or from space.

Hi John,I was just mentioning on the list the other day, that I frequently find myself needing to bootinto windows on my Mac to complete work because the application does not exist or thedoes not work as well as on the PC.  I truly feel that the Mac software is making leaps and great strides with every new release, however looking at the two platforms critically I feel the Mac is just not quite there.  I am willing to bet that within the next year this will not be the case.  The switchers are growing by the day.  The other little option not found on the pc  is the fact that one can boot into windows or run vm ware fusion to access windows.  On their Mac.  I am  an Adaptive Technology specialist, every month I am getting more and more requests about the Mac.  The truth is that many people dislike the fact that one must use many more keys than on the pc, however we are seeing that Apple is addressing this with each subsequent release as well.  For example the quick nav and the magic track pad gestures for Voice over.  I guess what I am attempting to say is  that I feel the answer is not a cut and dried one.  There are positives and negatives on both sides of the issue.    The bottom line is that looking at a pure productivity stand point the pc would have it hands down right now.  This will continue to change with Apples continued commitment to voice over and the adaptive technology that it continues to incorporate in the OS.  I hope that this helps.Sincerely,ScottOn Oct 10, 2010, at 2:50 PM, Neil Barnfather - Western Digital "my Passport" .. skip the bundled software.

2010-12-02 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
It would start doing its own back up when the VO cursor passed over the
"backup" button without pressing it. On my disk that I got on Black Friday
from Apple, it appears that the software actually on the disk is incompatible
with Snow Leopard, so I downloaded a version much newer, installed the WD
special SW that is supposed to speed up disk access, download new disk firmware
and then got only 40GB stored iVia time machine before the disk claimed to be
mangled beyond any additional writing.

After uninstalling the WD software from my applications, and rebuilding the HFS
partition a fourth time, the drive is working faster at time machine backups,
and passed the disk utility first aid tests.

If anybody wants the software that causes the Virtual CD to disappear I have
it stashed away.

Jon
Beware of the WD software that Western Digital supplies. I spent several hours
fighting the beast and getting corrupt disk partitions, and locked up WD
software. Also found that

Actually, I'm trying to do this on an MBP{ and having no luck. I imagine I'll

Re: can't get voiceover going after an installation

2010-12-02 Thread Jude DaShiell
Might it be that it makes no difference how you insert a DVD into the mac
mini it will try an installation with the right side up or down? If
that's the case, the label on the top side of the DVD could interfere with
the reading and installation and in that way leave you with an unuseable
computer? This would mean that the mac mini has an incorrectly calibrated
dvd sensitivity reader which is allowing an install attempt with the dvd
inserted in the machine in the wrong way. On Thu, 2 Dec 2010, Marc Workman

TIA

No, rss feeds are an infant technology as compared to usenet. On Thu, 2

Eric,
When I connected the bc40 to the ipod touch, the braille keys didn't do a
thing. Why is this?
the function keys did nothing either. I've done no mapping though. Just
trying to learn the display and how it functions when connecte to Apple
products. Thanks.

bootcamp windows xp

2010-12-02 Thread Oriol Gómez
Hi all,
Has any of you found an accessible way to install windows xp while
going bootcamp? I understand it might be possible with an answer file,
but I don't really want to use my own since mine is set to format all
partitions, even though I doubt it'll format the mac.
What do you all think?

Can't Get Home Sharing Working

2010-12-02 Thread Marc Workman
Hi,

I can't seem to get home sharing working. I've authorized two different
computers, I've turned on home sharing, and I gather I'm supposed to be able to
find the other computer somewhere, but I don't know where to look. I couldn't
find anything in the archives concerning this specific issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated.

Regards,

Marc
