You must be using a desktop machine. On all the laptops I've had, I've been able to hold down the Command and Option keys with my left thumb, the R key with my left middle finger, the P key with my right thumb and the Power button with my right middle finger.

Hearing the chimes tells you that it's working and if problems go away that didn't go away with just a restart, then that's more evidence that it's worked.
