I found some basic instructions to get this working.

I did a few extra things here, but now it speaks all chat. :)

Screen Readers on the Mac

2010-10-16 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello Heather. I would encourage you to start working with vo right away.
Reading is ok but doing is great. You really don't need another screen
reader on the mac because VO is part of the OS. Any other screen reader in
Windows is a compromise at best. I'm not saying that Windows Accessibility
is bad and that the screen readers don't work well. I am saying that VO
generally works better and the overall solution is more cost effective.
Think of it this way. ITunes is available for Windows and the MAC. There is
no comkparison, ITunes works much much much better on the MAC. Synching with
the IPhone is perfect. Any contact or calendar event I add on the mac synchs
flawlessly because the whole system is designed to work together. This is
true for VO on the Mac.

I hope you have a nice day. Since we're both in Austin, maybe we can get
together and work with our macs.

IWork accessibility

2010-10-16 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. I want IWork to be accessible. While working with an Apple
advisor I expressed some frustration about how to get feedback to the IWork
team. In each application there's a feedback option on the application's
menu. For example, I type vo+M to get to the menu and arrow right once to
get to the Pages menu. I arrow down to the feedback option and press enter.
The adviser told me that If I submit feedback this way it is routed to an
engineer on the pages team. I assume it works the same for the other IWork
applications and other apple products as well.

Hello all,

I agree that tables isn't handled very well in pages.
Also numbers, is accessible but it's missing some navigation-features for
everyone like you have in ms excel.
Kenotes isn't very accessible at this moment...

Safari is very bad at this moment : braille in formfields, voiceover is
crashing when you want to give feedback on itunes :( and... busy busy busy.
There are also other sites that voiceover can't access because it's
restarting constantly.

Also, when you have parts of text in tables, you cant jump to this parts
with (shift)vo+command+n like you can do on webpages.
So, it's my experience that you need to explore the table cel by cel and
this can be very frustrated.

I agree also that it would be nice if you can make different configs for
different programs but I don't think they will do that.

There should be more config-options for the braille-display:
specify the representations of different controls in the os like links,
checkboxes, comboboxes, radio buttons...
Also, the information on the brailledisplay should be independent of the
speech.
It's not always interesting e.g. to have tooltips on the brailledisplay and
the brailledisplay should not show dots 7 and 8 below a text because it's in
the voiceover-cursor.
As I understand well, everything on a brailledisplay is in the vo-cursor. If
so, it doesn't make any sence to underline.
On windows, the dots 7 and 8 are also used to show e.g. italic, bold,
underline in programs but here, this isn't possible.

I agree that it's not the main task of Apple to make tird party applications
accessible but, it would be nice if they should make a user-friendly
environment to adjust the representation of voiceover in programs that
aren't accessible out of the box.
e.g , firefox is a very good browser but, the developers aren't willing to
make it accessible with voiceover.
So, we have only 1 fully supported webbrowser and, is something works bad
with that browser, like no, we have no alternative.
The developers of opera will help but , I
think it goes slow.

It's normal that programs have bugs, for shore in the beginning but, they
should make a kind of interface so that we can make a complete and efficient
bugreport of something in voiceover.

And ..., they have implemented a drag and drop function with the keyboard in
10.6 but, it seems not to work at all.
I mean, it's not doing the same for us as for sighted users.

About other voices in osx: it would be nice to have the same voices
pre-installed like in ios4 but, it's not a priority for me.

I can't understand the way Apple is taking care about their software:
Since itunes version 10, workflows aren't working anymore.
We have waited several weeks for itunes 10.0.1 and the workflow problems
aren't still fixed.
At the moment.
No, it's fixed for me with the howto's on the internet but the debug-jobs
are something for Apple, not for the customers.
That's my opinion.
And also in this case: this problem belong to everyone , not only vo-users.

So, this is the most important of my frustrations :)

William Windels

Re: Screen Readers on the Mac

I have to concur with these comments. I seriously doubt anyone will develop
another screen reader for the Mac since there is little incentive. What is
important is to continue sending feedback and suggestions to
accessibil...@apple.com. Receiving feedback and suggestions lets APple know
users are using the product.

Re: IWork accessibility

2010-10-16 Thread Scott Howell
Yes. People, make use of the feedback tools made available to you. If you
honestly believe that feedback is ignored, it is not. COmpanies that provide
surveys and other tools for collecting information from you about your
experience with a product is interested in what you have to say. Surveys and so
forth cost money and companies are not willing to spend money on these things
if they do not intend to make use of the data.

Hello Justin. I hear you and you're preaching to the choir. This is ok and I
suggest that you address these issues with accessibil...@apple.com. In
addition, I suggest that you submit feeback directly to the Pages team.
There's an option on the application's menu. We are here to support each

That's what the rest of the world does and we need to do the same thing.

Permanent hot spots savable on a per application basis would also be nice.
And i totally agree with more accessibility of the ILife suite would be

Bringing back an iTunes library

Hi all. I deleted my iTunes library by mistake. All my library is still on my

Yes, Adium is your friend. You can have all your messengers in one. For

facebook chat and what have you.

There's a handy tool you can install and run via termin.app which will really

to solve a captcha, you just snap a shot of the screen using shift+command+3
and then press a hot key you define to automatically send the image to Solona
using your Solona ID and password. Thanks to Nickoli, this process is so
painless, it's unbelievable. I personally guarantee it does work.

My next question is regarding using the Web. Captchas-need I say more? On
the Windows side, one would remedy this problem by downloading and using
Firefox with the Web Visum plug-in, which performed OCR on the captcha
image
and placed it on the clipboard for convenient pasting into the
appropriate
edit box. Also, if you didn't wish to use Firefox, there was usually an
audio alternative. I am trying to create an iChat account on the Mac.
Naturally, this requires the use of the AOL web site. Before I can
proceed
to create my account, the web site requires that a captcha be entered.
Although they provide an audio alternative, Safari is completely unable
to
use it and the link (upon checking) is java scripted. I know that Firefox
is
not at all accessible on the Mac side (at least from the information I
received on this list), so are there any alternatives for captchas? Also
web-related, how do I go about obtaining Webkit-as some seem to think this
a
better web browsing solution in general? Your contributions, time, and
patience are appreciated.
Thanks:)

I'd like to see better html5 support. It's working more or less, but it could
be better. Improved calendar and garage band accessibility. and a female
voice just so as I could change it up once in a while. If they outsource
voices from nuance I'm going to scream. There's no reason to buy aweful when
we have acapela which is far better. If they would licence acapela I'd be

Grade two braille input is a must. I also want the magnification to go up to
10 times without pixalating. The magnification stuff has got to improve to a
point where it's on a par with the rest of voiceover.

Re: Apple's event next wednesday

2010-10-16 Thread Carolyn Haas
Eric:
On the subject of voiceover voicing, how come they only give breathing
capability to Alex? Also, I wonder why the other voices they have seem so weak
by comparison? Finally, in defense of Samaantha, I like her voice. it seems
to me to be the strongest option besides Alex; at least on the iPhone. On the
mac, if she's there under another name, she's not as strong. As a hearing
impaired person, I've found the voicing on the iPad the easiest of all of the
Apple voices to understand. But, that's just me.
I'm interested in other people's thoughts on this.

Re: Bringing back an iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
You might have to connect the Ipod and show it in Finder as a drive, then
either start Itunes and choose that drive with Itunes and rebuild the library
(I don't even know if that's possible, it's a theory), or copy the data from
your Ipod to your Mac as if from one drive to another and manually rebuild the
Itunes library. I believe holding down the left option key after opening
Itunes brings up the "choose library," dialog.

Re: Bringing back an iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi:
I believe it backs up automagically. If you try a spotlight search for
something from there, you'll very likely find it. If that doesn't work, make
sure iTunes is not set to sync automatically. Plug your ipod into the
computer, and you will be asked if you want to transfer music from your iPod to
your library. In this way, you can restore the library.

Re: Bringing back an iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Colin M
Hi James!
I'm an idiot!
If you put something in the bin that you should not have!
You go in there and get it back, then wash your hands!
So go to trash open the list view and find your library and open vo+shift+m in
there is an option to put back, this is of course you've not emptied your trash!

Re: Apple's event next wednesday

2010-10-16 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

Samantha is pretty good when you consider that DecTalk 32 was the Windows PC
standard for years.

This Apple experience seems to me to be a great ground level place for blind
consumers to set the standard expectations.

We have access to Apple. Let's use it wisely and productively by suggesting
accessibility directions. Yah, we're going to get a lot of different comments,
but that's how it works.

Apple has done really well at this point as a game changer for disability
access.

RE: Some stuff I did with pro tools.

2010-10-16 Thread Cameron
Hi. it depends on your needs and your budget. you don't just buy the
software. You need an approved piece of hardware as well to use pro tools.

There are three main flavors of pro tools. Pro tools le, pro tools m
powered, and, pro tools hd.

Pro tools le uses various avid/digidesign USB and firewire interfaces like
the m box, 003r, 003, etc. Pro tools m powered uses m audio and Mackie
interfaces including the pro fire, project mix, onyx 16-4-2, etc. Pro tools
hd uses high end hardware consisting of pci cards, interfaces, and other
components.

The main differences besides the I/O options are the number of tracks in a
session, and, sample rate.
Also with hd, you can use the pci hardware to do processing which would
free up CPU.

A decent I mac or mac book pro would be fine for pro tools le and m powered,
as long as you have a second hard drive you can use, like an external
firewire drive. For pro tools hd, you need a mac pro desktop, or, a mac
book pro with a pci express card slot and an external case to mount the pci
cards in...

As far as cost, you're looking at minimum, $300 and up.

Pro tools le or m powered are the two you'll probably want to investigate.

Chec out sweetwater or musicians friend etc to read up on specs and prices.

Cameron.

Re: Apple's event next wednesday

2010-10-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, Alex is really new, and the other voices that come with mac are really
legacy. I suspect breathing wasn't even a consideration when the older voices
were being developed. I've got alex running so fast here, that I never even
notice him breathing.

As far as Samantha, she is just about the snottiest manliest woman I have ever
heard. If she came up to me and said, "can I help you sir?", I'd be tempted to
punch her in the nose. She sounds like she smokes way too much. Aside from
just generally not liking her attitude, I find all the nuance voices a bit
choppy, and I find they don't distinguish properly between b's p's and V's, or
d's and T's, or S's and F's. Tom's especially bad for that. I don't know how
most people stand him. Karen at least has a nice sounding voice tone, and I
can live with the fact that she's australian.

The acapela voices are absolutely great. They have amazing tone and
inflection, they are nearly as smooth as alex. They just sound fantasttic. It
would be nice to date heather just once. You know, I really should get out
more if this is how I'm thinking about my computer.

As you might be aware, apple are holding a "Back To The Mac" event next
Wednesday at 10 eastern in Cupertino, California. There are rumours of
possible upgrades to the MacBook Air and also the unveiling of MAC OS X
 10.7.

Personally, I'd like to see a female voice that is as good as Alex, and

Accessibility improvements to garage band would be welcome, as well as

Who is not as good!
Maybe changing Victoria's pitch might help some people! :]

with synthetic speech, because they hadn't a screen reader then. Nowadays,
there is Voiceover so then other voices in other languages are more
appropriate, especially since the screen reader itself is actually
localized into other languages than english.
Other than that, i would love to see a better translation to Swedish of
Voiceover and the feature that the old Outspoken had, namely theability to
know where the cursor was, by hearing a beep when you spell a word, so
that if you had the word "browser" for example and you are in the middle
of the word, just between the "w" and "s", you could hear "b r o w beep s
e r" and if you then went one step to the right with the cursor, it'd go
 "b r o w s beep e r" and so on.
Permanent hot spots savable on a per application basis would also be nice.
And i totally agree with more accessibility of the ILife suite would be
 wonderful.

Re: Bringing back an iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi:
I believe it backs up automagically. If you try a spotlight search for
something from there, you'll very likely find it. If that doesn't work, make
sure iTunes is not set to sync automatically. Plug your ipod into the
computer, and you will be asked if you want to transfer music from your iPod to
your library. In this way, you can restore the library.

Thanks for your answer. Now I know more about protools and the different

I'm new to this software, I only tried sonar with differnt accessibility

work for som home studio enviroment.

Hi. for audio, it's mostly accessible, although the learning curve is
steeper than it is for sonar etc. midi is pretty much a no go for the time
being though in pro tools as you can't edit individual midi events.

Re: reripping cds with iTunes 10 issues

2010-10-16 Thread Kevin Shaw

Relaunch iTunes or reboot your machine. I find this solves problems.

5 to 10 minutes per CD sounds a little long, but with error
checking/correction, the time will be longer to account for missing or
corrupted data on the CD. CDs with scratches and smudges may read slower too.

There may be options in the Preferences you need to check and double check if
you're being prompted for an import location.

Hello Heather,

It isn't so much that VoiceOver doesn't support FireFox, but that FireFox
doesn't work with VoiceOver. When applications conform to Apple's
specifications for accessibility, they automatically work with VoiceOver.
VoiceOver is not tweaked for each application. In fact, VoiceOver isn't even a
screen reader, it's an alternative interface with the operating system.

I hope this explains the situation a little more clearly.

Cheers,

Anne

Heather,
its not that voiceover doesn't support firefox, its the other way around
(mostly because mozilla wants more access to apples code than apple will
allow). its a fight between apple wanting to protect their works and the open
source project that wants free information.

Hi all.

i got so many mails on this list and another one too, that I need to read them

Web Kit

2010-10-16 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

I must admit that I haven't been following the discussions about web kit very
closely as I didn't know what it was. I gather, now, that it is a good thing
for me to install. I decided to Google for it to install it but, something
seems to be wrong with my Google so, I can only type the "w" before my Mac
locks up. I've tried this three times with the same results.

Can anybody provide me the website or direct download url for web kit?

Thx,
Jeff

 Hi all.

As you might be aware, apple are holding a "Back To The Mac" event next
Wednesday at 10 eastern in Cupertino, California. There are rumours of
possible upgrades to the MacBook Air and also the unveiling of MAC OS X
 10.7.
So, what would you like to see included in next version of the OS, either
 generally or VoiceOver specific?

Personally, I'd like to see a female voice that is as good as Alex, and
to have voices in other languages even if it meant licensing them from
nuance as they have done in iOS.
Accessibility improvements to garage band would be welcome, as well as
 making iWeb accessible.
The last major thing I can think of is to finally fix the issue of VO
 randomly resetting itself.

I'm sure they'll come up with a load of things I haven't even thought of.
So what do you all think?

Re: Apple's event next wednesday

2010-10-16 Thread Windels William
hm, yes, good suggestion.
An alternative screenreader should be nice but:
It should cost money I think,
it can't have the same features from the beginning like vo since vo is already
5 years old and had already made big improvements.

However, it should be nice to have it for situations like you describe.

I don't know also if Apple has to make it possible or perhaps some external
companies should understand the need of a external screenreader next to a
built-in screenreader.
I fink we can say that vo has much more quality then a screenreader like nvda
or narrator on windows.

Re: Screen Readers on the Mac

2010-10-16 Thread Scott Howell
Heather, be clear on the fact that it is not VO that needs to support Firefox,
but for Firefox to be made accessible for VO. There are a number of issues for
why FireFox is not currently accessible with VO, but this is not any fault of
Apple. The folks at Mozilla are apparently going to or were going to address
this, but they were looking for outside assistance. At least this is how I
recall the situation.
The framework is in place for apps to be made accessible for VO, which is a
little different from how it works on the windows side of things.

Re: ways of tagging sections in a document

2010-10-16 Thread Jude DaShiell
The first thing to do is to come up with your own standard way of marking
out section headings and stick to that. Then since you know what your own
standard is, you'll know how and what to search for. I'm on the
treasurescroll list with blindtreasures.com and just above each new
product listing two asterisks are placed on a line by themselves. latex
exists and is a language very often used to mark up mathematics papers
with section headers and the like but I suppose latex in your case might
be the equivalent of using a deuterium bomb on a gnat. The key here for
finding out what others are doing though is "mark up languages". I almost
forgot, you might look at groff that's the latest incarnation in a long
line that went from roff to troff and ditroff now to groff. People were
using those in the Apple environment back as far as the Apple II days in
educational institutions and doing so heavily. On Wed, 13 Oct 2010, Linda

Hi all,

I would like one or more .txt files to .rtf files.

Normally, in textedit, I open a txt-file in it and with save as, I should see a
option to save as rtf but I can't find it.
Does it work on another way if you start from txt and want to convert the file
to a .rtf-file?

Do do it with more files at once, Is there a :
accessible, (free) program for the mac that can connvert txt to rtf (and
perhaps other filetypes)?

Thanx alot for your help,
best regards,
William

Re: What's up with victoria voice

2010-10-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, I'm using victoria just for a change. So far she's not doing it for me.

I've played with the pitch and I think she sounds passable at a slightly higher
than normal pitch, But nowhere near on a par with alex or the female acapella
voices.

She is fast though, I have my rate set to 80 and could probably go a little
higher without to much difficulty

Hum, maybe you should revisit NVDA. It hardly compares to Narrator. It's a
fully functioning open source scriptable screen reader with full msaa support,
braille support, sapi5 support, full web browsing capabilities, and
compadibility with other open source software. They've had 4 years to work on
that thing now. I'm not sure it's a full replacement for some one requiring
the advanced features of jaws or window-eyes or voiceover, but most of my
clients would be more than happy with the current state of NVDA for email, web,
basic microsoft word, windows support and other day to day computing.

Re: Telling time with Voiceover

2010-10-16 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Westley:
It's fairly easy to set VO to give you time and date. You'll need to go into
voiceover utilities with control-option-f8. use down arrow to go down to
commanders. Select this with VO (control option) spacebar. Vo-arrow right
until you hear keyboard commander and select this with vo-spacebar. Tab to
"enable keyboard commander and select it (vo-spacebar), Now, your choices are
to use right or left option key as a modifier. Select use right option key
(vo-spacebar). tab, and there's a little table of commands, You should hear
the letter t, followed by "run apple scripts script for time and day".
now tab back to utility categories and arrow up to general. tab to "allow
voiceover to be controled by Apple script." Enable this. Now, you can exit
Vo-utilities with command Q.
If you press right option Key, and the ltter t, Voiceover will speak the date
and time. There is also a default setting wherein with this arrangement, right
option S will open Safari for you from anywhere.
If you are new to all of this, it's not as complicated as it may seem initially.
Hope this has helped.

Using Book Port Plus with a Mac and HCSD cards and card readers.

2010-10-16 Thread Jenny Kennedy(Howard)
Hi guys,

I am looking to buy the book port plus from APH here rather soon. It
seems to be a very good device and I'm really looking forward to using
it.

I've a few questions about it and the Mac. How would you put NLS DTBs
on it? Would you just hook it up to the Mac and the Mac would just
treat it as a mass storage device as it does my thumbdrives currently?

Would I be better off getting a card reader and just accessing the
card via that?

I haven't access to a windows computer, but as far as I understand you
must have windows to regester the BPP with audible. Does anyone do
this? I just figured I might skip that step as I read all my audible
books via the iPhone app so this wouldn't be a "must have".

According to APH website I can use a 32GB HC card. How much are those
and what ones are best? How much is a card reader and what ones are
good that work with Mac.

Is there anything additional I need to know about the BPP and Mac? Do
they play nice together or are there some tricks I need to know so I
can get thse two bits of tech working hand in hand?

Thanks much for any help smile

Jenny

2010-10-16 Thread Mary Otten
If apple were to license voices other than those they've created and put them
on the Mac, I'd rather see them license Loquendo or A capella voices. Since the
A capella once already work, its a paid add on that offers English voices as
well as a bunch of foreign languages, if Apple wanted to add something, I'd
like to see them go there and never mind Samantha. they have to pay for Nuance
voices, so might as well pay for something that is worth the money.

Re: Using Book Port Plus with a Mac and HCSD cards and card readers.

I can't speak to the Bookport specifically since I don't own one but I'd say
it's easier to copy the files to the sd card in either your Mac's card reader
or an external one connected via usb port. Any sdhc card reader should work.
You can buy one of them for less than $10 usually.
Audible files do work on the Mac but you need to register using Itunes. If
that doesn't bother you then no problem
As for the sdhc card a 32 gig one should work well with any card reader
connected to the Mac so buy whichever card is recommended for the Bookport.
Not sure of the prices of the cards these days but I think it's under $100 now.
I paid about $140 but that was about three years ago then they first came out.
Think that covers it.
