I think it will work fine on any bo installation now (it's been tested on many bo systems, and my sgrep based dependancy/conflicts checker doesn't show up any more problems) if you want, i'll give you a copy of my checker if you want to run it against a rex Packages file. it's simplistic and you can't use the output directly - it's only useful as a guide to point out things for you to look into. > I rebuilt rex from a Cheapbytes 1.2.4 CD. Re: divide the list in beginners and advanced
I also agree think we should stick with a single list. Though I still ask more questions than I am able to completely answer, I do often at least attempt an answer and sometimes can give fairly helpful responses. In addition to the we-were-all-newbies-once argument I would like to point out that it can take a quite a bit of work to really learn your way around Debian/linux in general. It is expected (or was until the inception of Debian and similar systems) that the average member of the community can compile code on their own, spot problems (especially common ones), deal with the fact that few companies provide drivers for linux, etc. Certainly more than must be done under Win95. Traditionally, much of this information has been handed along personally in academic or occupational environments, but many modern user don't have these avenues open to them. Lilo revisited
I have recently recieved a question about Lilo in a private email (perhaps caused by my postings to this list). I belive the answer may be of value to others, so I will repost it here. This will also give experts a chance to flame me for spreading misinformation if I have gotten everything wrong :) Question: > A while back I was having trouble with lilo not recognizing my > drive properly. I overcame this by using the "linear" option in the > lilo.conf. would this do the same thing to overcome the need for > requiring the kernel to reside in the first 1024 cylinders? Answer: I believe the answer is no. Lilo depends on the BIOS to load the kernel (and other files in /boot). If the BIOS cannot acces the location on the drive there is nothing Lilo can do about it, and no linear option can change that. The linear option is used for a slightly different purpose. Lilo needs to know the exact physical location of the files in a format understandable by the BIOS, i.e. as sector/head/cylinder. It obtains this information by recording the linear adress of the files and then quering the kernel for the disk geometry parameters in order to translate the linear location into the sector/head/cylinder format. This may fail occasionally on large disks because the disk parameters obtained from the kernel query may be wrong. The kernel retrives these parameters directly from the device. However, the BIOS may use some implicit translation of sector/head/cylinder adresses in order to overcome the large disk problem. This implicit translation is invisible to the kernel, as the kernel never queries the BIOS. Thus the disk geometry reported by the kernel is incompatible with the disk geometry reported (and used) by the BIOS. A solution to this problem is to use the linear option. This causes Lilo not to query the kernel for the disk parameters. Instead Lilo records the linear physical location of the files, and performs the translation at boot-time by quering the BIOS for the disk parameters during boot. The situation is therefore this: - Some BIOSes cannot acces the upper part of a large disk if the disk reports geometry parameters with more than 1024 sectors. In this case the solution is to partition the disk carefully and place boot files on a partition below the 1024 sectors. - Some BIOSes can handle disks that report a disk geometry above 1024 sectors. These BIOSes uses translation to fool everyone into thinking the disk has less than 1024 sectors. In this case the boot files can be placed anywhere on the disk, but it is necessary to use the linear option to make Lilo aware of this translation. - Some newer large disks perform this implicit translation themselves, and thus reports a geometry to the BIOS and the kernel with less than 1024 sectors. In this case the BIOS can access the entire disk and Lilo operates perfectly with or without the linear option. Drives with this capability are usually referred to as LBA drives (logical block addressing). Conclusion: Always use the linear option. If it works everything is fine. If it doesn't work you must resort to the partitioning trick. Note however, that the linear option should not be used on floppies or together with the compact option (which is only useful on floppies). - Sten Anderson -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . What is the best setup in temrs of the internet providers i.e. what is available (e.g. 1) simple email, 2)just telneting to an internet provider's host machine 3) a whole IP address (like I have now) 4) some other setup ). More specifically is it possible (and not extremely expensive ) to be connected all the time and have his own ip address ? I guess that all the questions apart from the first one will be more relevant to UK users. Any help would be greatly appreciated. However after "mount -a" they > are mounted. > What do I have to change so that the vfat partititions are mounted > when Linux boots ? When you execute "mount -a" from the command line the vfat module is automatically loaded by kerneld, a daemon which automatically loads drivers and other modules when they are needed. However, kerneld does not automatically load drivers needed during system startup by default, and vfat isn't loaded, so you get "unknown filesystem." You need to edit /etc/modules. You can either (a) add vfat to the list, so that it is available during boot, or (b) add auto to the list, so that kerneld IS available during boot to load any other needed modules. I prefer (a). Try something like: xterm -e ssh -l username remotehostname X has problems with masquerading because the remote end initiates the port connection. If you use redir to redirect the port, you can only support X on one machine inside the firewall. With ssh, ssh initiates the encrypted connection and all responses come back over this connection. ssh pulls out the X info and displays it locally. No port problems. Also no authorization problems, because you already have permission to use the local display with your own programs. I couldn't agree with you more Fred. I thoroughly enjoy Linux, but I found it hard to get into. I am slightly above an average user having spent 10 years on mainframes, some assembler, some C++ and the last 5 years supporting Windows installations. There does seem to be a tendency within the Unix community that if it isn't a bit difficult to do or use then we must have done something wrong I would support in anyway that I am capable in providing some sort of easy front end to Linux to widen it's appeal. I am particularly interested in seeing something available for charities to use as a stable, cheap and therefore cost-effective way of providing file and printer services, mail and Internet access to support their work. However at the present, with it's rather dense interface I cannot see that being viable. I realise the value of the infinite configurability that the infinite number of configuration files gives you, but it is almost impossible (as well as daunting) for an inexperienced user to work out what to tweak and how. I would also consider that the help system needs to be looked at quite seriously. I believe that there are packages out there that make them more user friendly, but there must be a better way to provide help than man pages and the less command? I think that Linux has a great deal to offer to those who want a good solid OS with a wide range of applications. AFAIK it doesn't have anything like Exchange or Notes supported on it, but I suspect that the number of organisations needing that sort of application within my area of interest are rather limited. xlib6 3.3.1-2 + emacs 19.34-11 problem (?)
Hi all, my Debian system is basically bo. Some time ago I upgraded to libc6 2.0.6-2 and libc5 5.4.38-0.1 and didn't experience any problems with my old libc5 programs. But then I upgraded xlib6 to 3.3.1-2 and installed xlib6g 3.3.1-2 in order to use the new libc6 xfmail 1.2, and things took a bad turn: When I try to start emacs now I get a segmentation fault (this happens under X _and_ tty), and gv doesn't start either but produces the error message "gv: No message text for "missing-resources"". Is this really the fault of my new xlib6? If so, what can I do about it? You know, I _need_ my emacs :-) Greetings, Stefan pgp4e2OJbn9Aj.pgp Description: PGP signature

Database driver module problems
I am having problems getting the DBI drivers for mSQL working on my Debian Linux 1.3.1 system. I am using mSQL 2.0.3, DBI 0.91, and Msql-modules-1.1814. I have installed mSQL and the DBI module successfully (I think). Now I am trying to install the Msql driver module. I call "perl Makefile.PL" and "make" successfully, but "make test" fails. All of the tests print this warning, so I have removed it from their output below. The second test generates the following output: t/10dsnlist. Cannot connect: Unknown database "test" Either your server is not up and running or you have no permissions for acessing the DSN DBI:mSQL:test. As far as write permission goes, because I don't have an ACL file yet (since I don't really have any databases created except as tests) mSQL prints the message that permission is global read/write, so it seems like that shouldn't be an issue. The thing I'm more uncertain about is where mSQL is supposed to find these databases called "test" in the first place, and I'm not sure how to even determine this. If anyone can help with this problem, I'd really appreciate it. That package has problems. xinetd wasn't started when the package was done, and it didn't start after a reboot. That was annoying...so I removed that package. I think that inetd should be reinstated at this point, but the package doesn't do that. So now I'm without an inetd. So I use dpkg -S one inetd and see its in the netbase package. Ok. All of that would be "yes". And when I just run inetd by hand, it doesn't say anything, it works perfectly fine. Maybe I should make sure it removes all of its config files when I remove netbase, and then install again. I think that xinetd did weird things to my init files. BTW, i've been running hamm for months and this is what /etc/debian_version contains on my systems: $ cat /etc/debian_version 1.3 this isn't surprising, though, because debian 2.0 aka hamm hasn't been released yet. craig -- craig sanders -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . smail 3.2.0.100-4, won't accept mail form port25 no more
Hi all I use fetchmail to pop my mail usually, deliviring the mail locally by connection to smail via the standard port 25. Now smail still answers to port 25 if I telnet to it, but it does not for some reason want to deliver messages sent there. It does still seem to handle messages sent by calling it as sendmail, which I have set XFmail to do now. I can't seem to get fetchmail to work that way though. The problem only seems to have shown up since I upgraded my packages to the latest HAMM, which included the smail version mentioned in the subject. If I run Pine, I get this possibly usefull error message: [Error sending: 501 HELO requires a valid host name as operand: 'localhost' smail is set up using the first option when it ask me what kinda host I am (connected to net via TCP/IP or something similar) And when it comes to smart-host setup, I have configured to use my ISP's smtp server (I am a dialup user, BTW), and to use it for all mail. Ideally I'd like to know how to fix my smail problem, but in the mean time, knowing how to set fetchmail up to work in mda mode would be useful too. -- E-Mail: Neilen Marais <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 18-Jan-98 Time: 23:43:24 This message was sent by XFMail -- -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . There is probably no such thing like a debian version, because Debian consists of seperate packages, and each of them has an own version number. This gives finer graduation and makes it easier to fix parts of the system. Well, there are major stable releases, where we try to put together a stable system, where all packages fit nicely together. The last one was Debian 1.3.1, which some revisions that followed. You can get an idea of your version of Debian if you compare the version numbers of the essential packages. There is also a file /etc/debian_version, but this does not really reflect the version of the system as a whole. It says something like: "Hey, the last major upgrade leaded to this version".
