Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha1 images, last tests and announce on friday

2010-02-26 Thread Gary
I've not had luck with the final stage of the 64 bit installer -- yaboot
fails to install. I've tried weekly and nightly builds and those fail as
well. I can try again with another Mac G5 but I had to install lenny and run
a safe-upgrade in the mean time. I'll post more verbose error messages when
I've had a chance to reproduce them again.

Re: Debian or ubuntu

2010-03-16 Thread Gary
Ubuntu still has a PPC build maintained by the community. But I don't
think they have an XFCE/LXDE specific installer like Debian does. as
for Gnash, I had no problems with the Debian package & the Iceweasel
plugin package but I've only used it on a G5. I've also not tried the
Ubuntu PPC build in a couple of years or more.

Re sound, Ive been looking through the wiki for info on enabling sound
on the Mac G5. Has anyone found the solution & if so, did it work?

much thanks,

Debian is not really more difficult that Ubuntu IMO.

Not at all, you need to configure in Ubuntu few things as in Debian,

You may want to install a different DE instead of Gnome - for my iBook

It's similar to a Ubuntu install but not exactly the same. That said, it's
pretty straightforward and the XFCE/LXDE combo is quite nice. There's been
some work with Ubuntu and XFCE/LXDE on the x86 architecture in the way of
the U-Lite and Lubuntu projects but they're both still in beta.

It was but it appears I misunderstood your original post. I thought
you were trying to get OpenJDK to work with your govt. tax systems
whereas you were just commenting that it's unusable in general. I've
used Debian since before there were separate stable, testing, and
unstable branches so I'm thankful for all three layers as I've
deployed each of them where appropriate over the years. Some time I'll
tell you about a telco app that I had to support that was based on an
unstable branch of FreeBSD. Let's just say they're no longer in
business for a reason.

there are any PPC or Debian specific issues that anyone's come across.
And yes, I do have the nfs-kernel-server package installed and running

With all due respect, I believe the wrote about it in great detail to

Thanks for the quick reply. I, too, am running squeeze -- maybe I

Only if you plan on multi-booting between OS X and Debian. If you're
only running Debian then mac-fdisk will partition your drive properly
for yaboot to work with it. I don't remember having this issue with
stable but the current testing builds have an issue where they only
create an 800 K New World boot partition when it actually needs to be
800 Mb.

That's correct. But the installer would not pass without my manually
changing its size to 800Mb so there's a typo somewhere when it checks
it size, tell me it's not large enough, and forces me to enlarge it
from the command line with mac-fdisk. This was with the July 1st
weekly testing build but I haven't tried it again since...

Re: installing on PPC Mac Mini without any OS installed

2010-07-19 Thread Gary
The problem occurs when letting the partitioner use the whole disk
with guided partitioning. Honestly, though, the last time I tried to
install testing (this weekend) I gave up out of frustration and used
the stable install disc since its advanced options let me choose from
stable, testing, or unstable. The drawback, however, is that ext4
isn't included.

I thought I'd tried that but one would hope that an auto-config option

I've considered that but I'm not sure how I'd get that in to a boot
image. Doesn't it need to be included in the base and/or installer
package(s)?

Re: installing on PPC Mac Mini without any OS installed

2010-07-19 Thread Gary
I just tried the July 19 weekly build of testing and it won't detect
the GEM ethernet chipset or the SATA chipset. When I tried plugging in
a USB drive in to copy the syslog over, it could see the hfs+
partition and even report them in syslog but mounting fails even
though syslog shows the kernel properly sees all 4 partitions. Then I
ran mac-fdisk to change the partition from hfs+ to ext2, 3, or 4 but
none of those will format (missing /lib/libblkid.so). I can format it
with XFS or JFS but mount tells me there's no such device (/dev/sda3).
So there's no way I can send any files from this failed install... any
suggestions? A different install image perhaps? I don't know if it
makes a difference but I'm using the xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso.

I tried to do this with Zsombor's recent build but, unfortunately, the

For what it's worth, there is a dedicated XFCE & LXDE install CD for
PPC in both stable and testing. Your mileage may vary but I've had
better luck using the stable ISO which -- if you choose the advanced
option -- will also allow you to choose to install a system from
either stable, testing, or unstable packages. It runs quite well in
1Gb RAM on my Mac mini (PowerMac10,1). However, I highly recommend
using LXDE on systems with limited resources as I have tried XFCE a
couple of times and it seems -- at least on my hardware -- to spawn
more CPU/RAM consumptive processes than LXDE.

I would add a sid entry to sources.list, do apt-get update, and then try

# apt-get install [whatever samba packages I want to upgrade]

and see what it tells me I need. This way, only Samba and necessary
packages to use Samba 3 will be updated. (Assuming Samba 3 is available
in sid, which I have not checked.)

When done, remove the sid entry from sources.list and apt-get update.

raidtools2 (or raidtools) or mdadm can be used for software
RAID in Debian PPC. If you are familiar with setting up
software RAID in Red Hat, it will be identical in Debian ppc
using raidtools or raidtools2 (except you will have to write
the config file, which will be easy if you nab a similar one
from your Red Hat system to start with). You'll have to
use mkraid to make the RAID devices (e.g. /dev/md0), and you'll
have to make a file system in the resulting software RAID
devices. I know one can specify devices for software RAID
arrays in the Red Hat installer, and the installer does the
work. But there's not much to it (with raidtools[2], make
/etc/raidtab, run mkraid, format the devices, done).

You will need compiled in or modular RAID support in your
kernel.

I've used firewire hard drives in a Linux PC, and I access
them just as I access any SCSI hard drive (they appear as
SCSI devices, /dev/sda, etc.). I haven't yet attempted to
use the firewire port in my Mac (it's an iBook2, which I now
like using after blowing away OS X ;).

I just did one of these last night using X from unstable and benh kernel
obtained (yesterday) with rsync as described at

http://penguinppc.org/~benh/

It was unusable with radeonfb (had to use video=ofonly for legible text
console, but no X this way) until I did rsync update for benh kernel;
2.4.20-ben1 worked, 2.4.20-rc4-ben0 did not. X works mostly now, but
this was not so until I updated the kernel module radeon.o, obtainable
by adding

deb http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-trunk/ ./

to sources.list and apt-getting drm-trunk-module-src (use to rebuild
radeon.o).

I guess sleeping is still an issue for Radeon M7 units? I tried
snoozing mine (by shutting the lid); it froze. This works fine in a
Radeon M6 unit.

No, I actually didn't. I'll have to double check the details below, but
from memory:

1 radeonfb from 2.4.20-pre4-ben0 gave dark text console with many
horizontal lines moving vertically (hard to describe, but video
quality was poor, and fblevel was working backwards -- 1 was bright,
  15 was dim). I was able to start X (using agpgart.o + radeon.o),
but the horizontal lines were present in X, plus the right 1/5 or
so of the screen had many more horizontal lines.

2 OF framebuffer from 2.4.20-pre4-ben0 gave good text console but
X would not work do to lack of framebuffer device usable by X.

3 radeonfb from 2.4.20-ben1 (rsync benh kernel Sunday evening) gave
good text console, but syslog reported unknown north bridge (instead
of Apple Uni) when agpgart + radeon loaded. I _think_ startx led
to blank screen at this point, but I was able to ssh in and reboot
the iBook. (There was some problem after startx that led to doing
4 below, but I will have to double check exactly what is was.)

4 Replaced radeonfb from Dänzer's drm-trunk-module-src. syslog
now reported Apple Uni North when agpgart + radeon loads, and
  X starts fine. Unfortunately, I realize I downgraded xserver-xfree86
from unstable to testing before I did this, so XFree86 was from
testing at this point. Everything looked good (glxinfo output
looked promising) but glxgears showed a red box and frame rates
(at default window size) of 40 fps (it looked like the red box
was perhaps flashing at high frequency). There were minor visible
artifacts after closing glxgears, at which time I killed X and
was back at an uncorrupted text console.

Tonight I will try 4 with unstable XFree86 and then perhaps with
xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk.

Right; I'm just specifying which versions of each I needed. Without
radeonfb from 2.4.20-ben1, I had scrambled text console and scrambled
X. Without your radeon kernel module, no X, either. (With older
radeonfb and your radeon kernel module, I still get scrambled X, so the
old radeonfb is effecting X, which is to be expected since it provides
the framebuffer device [Provides? I don't understand the relation
exactly] used by X.)

Yeah I was thinking that as I composed the last 1 2 3 4 note. :)

Re: Report of success on iBook3 in woody/sid with video, dri and airport OK

2002-12-16 Thread Gary Sandine
I've done some more tests and am hoping something here rings a bell
about how to fix the glxgears-induced corruption. (Evidently, snooze
and wakeup is out of the question with Radeon M7 at this point in time.)

For decent video at all (text or X), Radeon frame buffer (in console
drivers) from >= 2.4.20-ben1 is required, along with video=radeon passed
to kernel at boot. For X, agpgart and radeon.o (the former from
2.4.20-ben1 kernel, the latter from drm-trunk-module-src) must be
loaded.

Given the above, text console looks good with properly functioning
fblevel (pmud-utils from unstable), and X starts fine. glxgears makes a
red box and corrupts the top of the screen. I get the same behavior
(and log, glxinfo outputs) using XFree86 from testing, from unstable, or
from xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk (with the above specified radeonfb and
radeon.o + agpgart). Current X server is xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk.

glxinfo, XFree86.0.log, and XF86Config follow.

Thanks.

By default, (if my memory serves me well) you will find a line

I second that. I have extensive experience (I own a Web-based PC shop

and Seagate is typically quieter out of the box and remains that way.

You can help keep it quiet (seems to be not such an issue with Seagate,

the hard drive to keep the temperature down, although it sounds like
this is not an option for the use you have in mind.

My iBook did this -- the installer would not boot unless I chose

install-safe

(rather than install or install24 or install24-safe) at the initial boot
prompt when attempting to boot from a net install CD. Pressing tab at
the initial boot prompt shows kernel options. Try something other than
the default (assuming tab shows you have more than one option)?

You can learn this by reading hpmount(1) and the other man pages
referenced at the bottom of hpmount(1). Usage of utilities in hfsplus
is bizarre compared to the usual "mount", "cp", etc., and if one does
not carefully read the man pages I mention above, one will likely have
little success using the HFS+ utilities. The utilities work OK though.
If they don't seem like they are working for you, re-read, e.g.
hpmount(1) and hpcopy(1),

Oh yeah I did not read carefully -- hfsplus is for HFS+, not HFS.

If that is your actual append entry in yaboot.conf, it is not correct.
It should be:

append="hdb=ide-scsi"

plus whatever other options you might need in the quotes. In my iBook,
I have:

append="video=atyfb keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes=1 hdb=ide-scsi"

Every time I have tried to install OS X in a system already running
Linux, OS X's installation disk utility plowed the whole drive, forcing
a Linux reinstall. This happened once, too, when installing from within
mol, which was interesting ;). It could just be that I don't know how
to make the OS X disk utility do what I want it to do ('cuz evidently, I
don't).

Yes I had set it up ahead of time with the necessary partitions at the
front of the drive, preparing to attempt an OS X install from w/in mol.
I left empty space at the back of the drive OS X's HFS+ file system.

The OS X disk utility in the installer killed the existing Linux
partitions that were in use (it was kind of "exciting" [because I did
not care about having to do a Linux reinstall] to wait and see what
would happen next, when I realized what had happened). One window
disappeared at a time, until I was left with a blank screen.

I figured it was just my problem not knowing how to use the OS X disk
utility thingie. (It always kills preexisting Linux partitions for me
-- whether running native or in mol.) Perhaps someone who has
successfully installed OS X in mol without killing Linux will tell. ?

I did try making an HFS partition at the back of the drive (along with
the necessary bootstrap partition at the front), and OS X installer did
not find any partitions in which it could install itself. So, I then
tried leaving the space at the back of the drive unpartitioned,
intending to use the OS X disk utility (in the installer) to make an
HFS+ data partition. It did that, but it killed the Linux partitions in
the front of the drive, too.

Yes I did run mol as root. I don't know how to run mol as non-root or
as non-suid.

Yeah as far as I know, that's the case, too. Although I _did_
create a partition for OS X to claim, and it would not use it
(I had attempted to duplicate the partition scheme from a
previous OS X/Debian PPC dual boot system). The installer
scanned for available volumes for the install, and "found" none.
There seemed to be no alternative to using that lovely disk utility.

I put the appropriate part of molrc.osx as

blkdev: /dev/hda-rw

According to comments in that file, only HFS+ partitions are exported,
unless -whole flag is used. So one can make a type HFS partition first
and export only it, but I do not know how to make OS X identify and
offer this volume as a target for itself. Or, one can leave blank
space, export like the line above, and have OS X's "disk utility" plow
the drive.

I'm at a loss about what's the best way to handle this. I resort to
installing OS X first at the back of the drive (to run in mol or
whatnot), and then installing Linux.

I just saw exactly this behavior due to pbbuttonsd not running. It
attempted to start but failed because /dev/cdrom symlink did not exist.
Attempting to start pbbuttonsd from the command line

# pbbuttonsd

revealed it's problem with no /dev/cdrom symlink.

Went to sleep by closing lid, I meant. When in VT 7 with X running,
unit would not wake up from sleep after closing and opening lid -- no
keys had any effect. This changed once pbbuttonsd was running.

When in text VT (even with X running in VT 7)... hell now I can't
remember if it woke up immediately upon opening lid or if key press was
required. I'll kill pbbuttonsd and try this when I have less going on
in case it crashes.

I figured the problem was due to lid open event not being caught
(because pbbuttonsd was not running). In light of Ben's comment, I'm
not sure what to think now. All I know was I could do nothing to make
the unit wake up after sleep by closing lid when in VT 7 running X until
pbbuttonsd was running.

Are you using ide-scsi for the CDRW device? By the -scanbus output, it
does not look like it. If not, use ide-scsi for the CDRW device
(/dev/hdb in an iBook), and -scanbus will output something like

$ sudo cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 2.01a10 (powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003

0,3,0 3) *

0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *

In this example, I'd use dev=0,0,0.

My append line in /etc/yaboot.conf looks like

append="video=radeonfb hdb=ide-scsi keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes=1"

You might need a line

ide-scsi

in /etc/modules. If you already use hdb=ide-scsi and -scanbus gave what
it did for you, do "/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi" and try -scanbus again.

If you use cdrecord 2.x, you can try using ide-cd (eliminate the
ide-scsi argument) and then try dev=ATAPI:0,0,0.

I too have experienced file system corruption on x86 using ReiserFS;
three times, after which I moved everything (in a heavy use NFS file

always with text files (e.g. modules.conf becomes binary garbage, user
Mozilla config files become binary garbage) after a reboot.

I have found it challenging with XFS to find patches that work with some
kernels I want to run (and I don't have enough knowledge to deal with
some .rej files by hand).
