Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha1 images, last tests and announce on friday
I've not had luck with the final stage of the 64 bit installer -- yaboot fails to install. I've tried weekly and nightly builds and those fail as well. I can try again with another Mac G5 but I had to install lenny and run a safe-upgrade in the mean time. I'll post more verbose error messages when I've had a chance to reproduce them again. -Gary

Ubuntu still has a PPC build maintained by the community. Re: installing on PPC Mac Mini without any OS installed
I just tried the July 19 weekly build of testing and it won't detect the GEM ethernet chipset or the SATA chipset. When I tried plugging in a USB drive in to copy the syslog over, it could see the hfs+ partition and even report them in syslog but mounting fails even though syslog shows the kernel properly sees all 4 partitions. Then I ran mac-fdisk to change the partition from hfs+ to ext2, 3, or 4 but none of those will format (missing /lib/libblkid.so). I can format it with XFS or JFS but mount tells me there's no such device (/dev/sda3). So there's no way I can send any files from this failed install... any suggestions? A different install image perhaps? I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm using the xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso. -Gary -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-powerpc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? For what it's worth, there is a dedicated XFCE & LXDE install CD for PPC in both stable and testing. Your mileage may vary but I've had better luck using the stable ISO which -- if you choose the advanced option -- will also allow you to choose to install a system from either stable, testing, or unstable packages. It runs quite well in 1Gb RAM on my Mac mini (PowerMac10,1). If you are familiar with setting up software RAID in Red Hat, it will be identical in Debian ppc using raidtools or raidtools2 (except you will have to write the config file, which will be easy if you nab a similar one from your Red Hat system to start with). You'll have to use mkraid to make the RAID devices (e.g. /dev/md0), and you'll have to make a file system in the resulting software RAID devices. I know one can specify devices for software RAID arrays in the Red Hat installer, and the installer does the work. But there's not much to it (with raidtools[2], make /etc/raidtab, run mkraid, format the devices, done). You will need compiled in or modular RAID support in your kernel. I've used firewire hard drives in a Linux PC, and I access them just as I access any SCSI hard drive (they appear as SCSI devices, /dev/sda, etc.). I haven't yet attempted to use the firewire port in my Mac (it's an iBook2, which I now like using after blowing away OS X ;).

I'll have to double check the details below, but from memory: 1 radeonfb from 2.4.20-pre4-ben0 gave dark text console with many horizontal lines moving vertically (hard to describe, but video quality was poor, and fblevel was working backwards -- 1 was bright, 15 was dim). I was able to start X (using agpgart.o + radeon.o), but the horizontal lines were present in X, plus the right 1/5 or so of the screen had many more horizontal lines. 2 OF framebuffer from 2.4.20-pre4-ben0 gave good text console but X would not work do to lack of framebuffer device usable by X. 3 radeonfb from 2.4.20-ben1 (rsync benh kernel Sunday evening) gave good text console, but syslog reported unknown north bridge (instead of Apple Uni) when agpgart + radeon loaded. I _think_ startx led to blank screen at this point, but I was able to ssh in and reboot the iBook. (There was some problem after startx that led to doing 4 below, but I will have to double check exactly what is was.) 4 Replaced radeonfb from Dänzer's drm-trunk-module-src. syslog now reported Apple Uni North when agpgart + radeon loads, and X starts fine. Unfortunately, I realize I downgraded xserver-xfree86 from unstable to testing before I did this, so XFree86 was from testing at this point. Everything looked good (glxinfo output looked promising) but glxgears showed a red box and frame rates (at default window size) of 40 fps (it looked like the red box was perhaps flashing at high frequency). There were minor visible artifacts after closing glxgears, at which time I killed X and was back at an uncorrupted text console. Tonight I will try 4 with unstable XFree86 and then perhaps with xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk.

Without radeonfb from 2.4.20-ben1, I had scrambled text console and scrambled X. Without your radeon kernel module, no X, either. (With older radeonfb and your radeon kernel module, I still get scrambled X, so the old radeonfb is effecting X, which is to be expected since it provides the framebuffer device [Provides? I don't understand the relation exactly] used by X.) > radeon DRI only works with my packages yet, you're basically lucky it > didn't crash and burn. :) Yeah I was thinking that as I composed the last 1 2 3 4 note. :)
Re: Report of success on iBook3 in woody/sid with video, dri and airport OK
I've done some more tests and am hoping something here rings a bell about how to fix the glxgears-induced corruption. (Evidently, snooze and wakeup is out of the question with Radeon M7 at this point in time.) For decent video at all (text or X), Radeon frame buffer (in console drivers) from >= 2.4.20-ben1 is required, along with video=radeon passed to kernel at boot. For X, agpgart and radeon.o (the former from 2.4.20-ben1 kernel, the latter from drm-trunk-module-src) must be loaded. Given the above, text console looks good with properly functioning fblevel (pmud-utils from unstable), and X starts fine. glxgears makes a red box and corrupts the top of the screen. I get the same behavior (and log, glxinfo outputs) using XFree86 from testing, from unstable, or from xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk (with the above specified radeonfb and radeon.o + agpgart). Current X server is xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk. glxinfo, XFree86.0.log, and XF86Config follow. You can help keep it quiet (seems to be not such an issue with Seagate, though, as it is with IBM and WD) by blowing a slow (quiet) fan across the hard drive to keep the temperature down, although it sounds like this is not an option for the use you have in mind.

Although I _did_ create a partition for OS X to claim, and it would not use it (I had attempted to duplicate the partition scheme from a previous OS X/Debian PPC dual boot system). The installer scanned for available volumes for the install, and "found" none. There seemed to be no alternative to using that lovely disk utility.

I put the appropriate part of molrc.osx as blkdev: /dev/hda-rw According to comments in that file, only HFS+ partitions are exported, unless -whole flag is used. So one can make a type HFS partition first and export only it, but I do not know how to make OS X identify and offer this volume as a target for itself. Or, one can leave blank space, export like the line above, and have OS X's "disk utility" plow the drive. I'm at a loss about what's the best way to handle this. I resort to installing OS X first at the back of the drive (to run in mol or whatnot), and then installing Linux.

By the -scanbus output, it does not look like it. If not, use ide-scsi for the CDRW device (/dev/hdb in an iBook), and -scanbus will output something like $ sudo cdrecord -scanbus Cdrecord 2.01a10 (powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003 J?rg Schilling Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24 Using libscg version 'schily-0.7' scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) 'TOSHIBA ' 'DVD-ROM SD-R2102' '1K27' Removable CD-ROM 0,1,0 1) * 0,2,0 2) * 0,3,0 3) * 0,4,0 4) * 0,5,0 5) * 0,6,0 6) * 0,7,0 7) * In this example, I'd use dev=0,0,0. My append line in /etc/yaboot.conf looks like append="video=radeonfb hdb=ide-scsi keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes=1" You might need a line ide-scsi in /etc/modules. If you already use hdb=ide-scsi and -scanbus gave what it did for you, do "/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi" and try -scanbus again. If you use cdrecord 2.x, you can try using ide-cd (eliminate the ide-scsi argument) and then try dev=ATAPI:0,0,0.

I too have experienced file system corruption on x86 using ReiserFS; three times, after which I moved everything (in a heavy use NFS file server) to ext3 and have had no problems. The Reiser problems were always with text files (e.g. modules.conf becomes binary garbage, user Mozilla config files become binary garbage) after a reboot. > I've now been using XFS and ext3 for quite a long time without any > serious problems. I have found it challenging with XFS to find patches that work with some kernels I want to run (and I don't have enough knowledge to deal with some .rej files by hand).

Then I try again and all goes fine. Does this mean > my harddisk is not stable anymore My iBook did this a few months ago and I nabbed the data after a successful boot and then changed the hard drive (which was crazy hard to me who is used to working on PC laptops; I had three screws left over of about 30 removed when done :). No problems since then.

I remember now this happening to my ibook, indeed due to a stuck key. Finding and pressing the stuck key a few times made it un-stick.

No Keyboard Input
I am a Linux newbie with a major problem. I did a minimum install (plus development tools) from the Woody 3.0r1 CDs, the updated everything using "dselect" to Sid over my slow internet connection. I re-booted with the aim of installing X11, but at the login prompt, the keyboard is unresponsive. During the configuration stage for Sid, I chose "Standard" Macintosh keyboard --- was this the correct choice for my PowerBook G3 (Pismo)? I've started up the rescue CD and and mounted /root (/target using the CD's shell), but I have no idea what files to edit to get a working system. Running /target/usr/sbin/base-config fails. My bandwidth is regulated (1G per month), so I don't want to start over again. Any help would be great http://personals.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Personals New people, new possibilities. Evolution Strangeness
Hi all, I have migrated from Yellow Dog 3.0 (Evolution 1.4) to Debian Unstable (Evolution 1.4.5). Now some of my "all day" appointments take up 2 days in the monthly calendar view. I suspect it is a Daylight saving issue, but it is not consistent, and I can't pin it down. Has anyone seen this before? Gary Martin

modconf stopped working
Hope someone can help? All-of-a-sudden, modconf stopped working --- I type modconf at the prompt, there is disk activiety for a few seconds, then I am returned to the prompt. Any ideas. Is that the PowerMac3,4? If so, we might still have a couple in the office so I'll look around on Monday.
