unlike its predecessor, grub2 works with OpenFirmware. but just because there's a package available doesn't mean it's being used by the distribution yet. so my best guess is that it's a work in progress -- hence its appearance in testing and unstable. q.v. http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-2-faq.en.html
