booting from CD on Ti PowerBook
Hello, I just got my Ti PowerBook, and I'm trying to install Debian on it, having no use for the proprietary software that came with it. I've made a CD of the non-us 2.2r2 image using the pseudo-image kit and cdrecord. So, I get into OpenFirmware, and then I try using "boot cd:", but that fails with: 0 > boot cd: method not found; ihandle=0 phandle=0 load-size=0 adler32=1 LOAD-SIZE is too small ok 0 > However, "boot cd0" does appear to work at first (I see a line printed on the screen like "Loading ELF", which I assume is coming from the Linux kernel), but then it eventually begins booting MacOS after the screen flashes a few times (I see the "Welcome to MacOS" screen, at which point I reboot). FWIW, the OF header printed when I start the PowerBook is: Apple PowerBook3,2 3.3.6f5 BootROM built on 11/12/00 at 21:26:37 Any help would be appreciated!

Apparently the 2.2r2 CDs don't want to boot directly on the newer machines; but you should still be able to boot from CD by going into OpenFirmware (hold Command-Option-O-F on startup), and then typing boot cd:\\yaboot Does that work?

potato r3
So, I finally got my TiBook back from Apple repair, who kindly reinstalled MacOS. After re-erasing it and installing potato r3, I tried to boot my new Debian system, and I got the "image not found" message from yaboot. At first, I thought I'd screwed up mkofboot, but I eventually traced this message back to the problem that on the new system, /vmlinux was a symlink to boot/vmlinux-2.2.19, which didn't exist! In fact, my whole /boot directory was empty. And just now, looking at the output of "dpkg -l 'kernel-image*'", I don't have any kernel images installed. Using OF, I was able to boot from the kernel from the CDROM with root=/dev/hda5, and from there finish the installation. One other thing; I noticed that the potato r3 CDROM booted on my TiBook, but there was just a white screen. I went into OF and booted using video=ofonly, which worked. Maybe video=ofonly could be made the default for installations? There's probably some reason it's not (I know next to nothing about the PPC world), but I thought I'd mention it.
postgresql?
Does anyone know what's up with the main postgresql package in powerpc sid? It doesn't appear to be in the archive, and I didn't see a failed build log on voltaire. The postgresql-doc package is available, though, which indicates the buildd must have at least tried to build the postgresql source package. But I was able to dpkg-buildpackage from the source package just fine. Also, xlibosmesa3 and xlibosmesa3-dev appear to be unavailable at the moment, which makes task-x-window-system uninstallable, but I assume this is a transient problem...

Well, I did skip the tasksel installation (by answering N to apt-get), because I was upgrading to sid anyways. But I would think that I would still have had a kernel installed as part of the base system installation. I did remove quik right after rebooting, so that might explain why there wasn't other stuff in /boot. > probably a good idea, enough machines need it... it works on all of > them it just makes things hideously slow. i would prefer getting > framebuffer patches into the debian kernels so its not required > though. running a system with video=ofonly is PAINFUL. Yeah, I'm almost positive I did (could I have really avoided it?). But, I just had to do another reinstall, and /boot did have the kernel in it. However, I still wasn't able to boot directly, despite the fact that /boot/vmlinux-2.2.19 existed. I think this might be because I made /boot a separate partition (I plan to move to XFS soon), and the default ybin setup thought the kernels would be on my / filesystem? I understand this is a tricky case. > > Ok, well, if there is going to be a potato r4, it would be nice. > > I think running slowly is better than not running (or rather, not > > running usefully) at all... > > we could add it to the yaboot.conf on the CD, but users will have to > do that themselves since there is no yaboot setup on potato. I think it makes sense to make video=ofonly the default for the CD (assuming there will be a potato r4). And, since (for potato) users already have to frob their /etc/yaboot.conf after installation anyways, so I don't see the disadvantage in adding it to the default append=, possibly with a comment explaining when it's needed.

Somehow I managed to recently do a potato r3 install, but not install a kernel image. My suggestion is to boot from the CD, using your disk as the root filesystem: OpenFirmware: boot cd:\\yaboot yaboot: debian root=/dev/hda11 That should at least allow you to boot into Debian and see if you have the same problem I did (no kernel image in /boot). Funny you mention this, as there was a thread a while back with almost the exact same subject (except postgresql wasn't capitalized). To save you the trouble of looking at the archives, powerpc has no non-US autobuilder, so some things can get out of date. In this case, however, I think PostgreSQL 7.0 is in sid. Right, I had the same experience. Are the framebuffer patches going to make it into the kernel for woody? I really think we should either do that, or add video=ofonly as part of the default yaboot setup.

Well, if the logs aren't enormous or anything, just post them to the list, and hopefully someone will be able to answer. If it's not PowerPC specific (and it probably isn't), posting to debian-user might be a good idea too.

Does the user you are running as have permissions to access /dev/dsp? The best way to do this is to add your user to group "audio". Also, the OSS sound output plugin in XMMS is broken for me (see bug #96251). But using "ogg123 -d oss foo.ogg" works fine, so it's definitely an XMMS bug. The workaround I'm using with XMMS is to use the esound output plugin. If you're using KDE, this might not be an option; I don't know. > Part II Just for fun, I wanted to see if I could play a CD. benh 2.4.6 kernel
Is anyone else out there using a recentish benh 2.4.6 kernel with a TiBook? 2.4.4 from a while ago worked fine for me for pretty much everything, but 2.4.6 kills the machine when I close the lid. I would just stick with 2.4.4, except that it locks the machine when I try to build the Debian boot-floppies, I believe when the build process makes a loopback device.

Well, there's a fair amount of documentation at: http://www.debian.org/devel/> As for this specific case, just follow the instructions I gave in my previous mail for building a package. One issue you might run into is that a package "Build-Depends" on a newer package than you have. If you're lucky, you can just grab the source for that package, build and install it, then build and install the package you were working on. If you're unlucky, and one of the packages it Build-Depends: on is debhelper, which Depends: on perl 5.6, then you're basically screwed, and it's better to just upgrade to woody or sid. What I would do if I was you is to take Ethan's suggestion and get the source for Adrian Bunk's backport of packages needed for 2.4.x on potato, and then rebuild those for PowerPC. I'd ask on debian-user@lists.debian.org if you need more help with that, unless it's PowerPC-specific, in which case asking here would be good.

This doesn't sound like a PowerPC specific problem. Are you sure your /etc/resolv.conf is correct? Can you ping IP addresses? Do you have any firewall rules that might be dropping packets? I'd carefully compare the network settings of your other working computer with your laptop, and make sure they make sense.
Re: [srivasta@debian.org: Re: Bug#100579: kernel-image should not run quik on NewWorld PowerMacs]
So, this problem is hopefully fixed for pmac architectures. Could anyone tell me what problems they've had on non-pmac PowerPC architectures? I'm looking at the kernel-package code now, and it seems likely that it would break on APUs, Amiga, MBX, and PReP (by defaulting to running LILO). Can anyone confirm this? Are there any other problems?

Is there any way I could just drop a new upstream tarball into the Debian XFree packages, frob a configure flag and debian/rules, and expect it to work? Or do you just 'make install' into /usr/X11R6? That seems kinda ugly...I'd rather not walk all over my Debian packages.

Try 'apt-get install task-dialup' if you haven't already.

Just to make this explicit, hold down Command-Option-o-f to get into Open Firmware, then type: boot cd:\yaboot at the prompt. This will take you to the yaboot prompt. At that, type: debian video=ofonly Passing the "video=ofonly" option to the kernel is the critical part. This should all be in the archives, by the way.

I've noticed (and I think this just happened recently on a kernel upgrade) that I need to run "gmix" in order to get sound. Perhaps the default sound level changed to "off"? By the way, I don't think the system beep is produced through the sound card.

(split off /usr /var /home and /tmp and things will > be easier). In my opinion, if you have another computer on the LAN with enough disk space, the best way to convert your filesystem to XFS (or any other file system) is the following: 1) Install system normally (be sure to install xfsprogs). The only required separate partitions are /boot and /, although you can make others if you want. 2) Make a netboot and NFS-root capable kernel (this means enabling CONFIG_IP_PNP and CONFIG_ROOT_NFS). Install it. (You probably want to use kernel-package for this). 3) set up yaboot to boot that kernel. Here's the relevant portion of my /etc/yaboot.conf: image=vmlinux label=linuxnfs root=/dev/nfs append="nfsroot=192.168.5.76:/backup/space-ghost ip=192.168.5.90:192.168.5.76:192.168.5.1:255.255.255.0:space-ghost:eth0:off" read-only Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/nfsroot.txt for an explanation of the options. 4) rsync -ave ssh --exclude /proc / [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/export/ 5) reboot using that kernel. You should now be running almost entirely off the network (except for /boot). 6) use mkfs.xfs on /dev/hdX, mount /dev/hdX /mnt/image 7) rsync -ave ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/export /mnt/image 8) reboot using your shiny new XFS filesystem

Well, -H will make things go more slowly. Perhaps not a big deal though. > I've had to edit /etc/mtab to make mkfs.xfs believe that it can > actually safely create the filesystem. ?? That's bizarre, /etc/mtab should have been overwritten on reboot. Ah, I think I know why this happened. I forgot to list two important steps. 4½) Before you reboot using the NFS root, you need to change your fstab on the remote computer's image to look like: 192.168.5.76:/ / nfs defaults 0 0 /dev/hdX /boot ext2 rw 0 2 # change X to your /boot partition proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 # plus any swap partitions 7½) Change the filesystem type of / from ext2 to xfs in your new /mnt/etc/fstab. Also, be sure the "options" field is just "defaults". This means you need to remove errors=remount-ro or whatever. Good luck!
