This doesn't sound like a PowerPC specific problem. Are you sure your /etc/resolv.conf is correct? Can you ping IP addresses? Do you have any firewall rules that might be dropping packets? I'd carefully compare the network settings of your other working computer with your laptop, and make sure they make sense.
