Digital signature legislation tutorial posted

2002-11-21 Thread Peter Gutmann
I've recently revamped part 2 of my Godzilla security tutorial, splitting off
the coverage of digital signature legislation and related issues into its own
section. Part2a, consisting of a total of 79 slides, covers the question of
why we need digital signature legislation, what is a signature, paper
vs.electronic signatures, non-repudiation, trust, and liability, existing
approaches, examples of existing legislation of various types including
advantages and drawbacks, and the Digital Signature Law litmus test (and it
also explains why having a techie comment on legal issues isn't as silly as it
sounds :-). It's available as part 2a of the Godzilla tutorial at
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/tutorial/index.html. Comments welcome

Cable News is reporting that the Onion, America's Finest News Source,
has
pulled from its Web site an article on the recent siege at the Moscow
theatre by Chechen rebels.

You got any pointers to that?

I'm not seeing any mention of this story searching www.cnn.com,
news.google.com or news.yahoo.com.

Try searching Google for likely combinations of words. This worked for
me:

"michael bay chechen"

That The Onion (www.theonion.com) no longer has the article which
Google and other sites linked to is precisely the point of the story.

Again, the Google-cached article from 13 November is at:

http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache:aTDv7HqpUIsJ:www.theonion.com/
onion3842/
those_chechen_rebels.html+michael+bay+pearl+harbor+chechen&hl=en&ie=UTF-

Whether the article and its removal were all part of the satire or
political commentary is unknown to me, but the fact is that a bunch of
Web crawlers ("observers," in quantum mechanics lingo) saw the article
and indexed it is enough for me to beleve it was there, at least
temporarily.

But as the DAs and judges in the fascist television program "Law and
Order" like to point out every week, "things are different now."

Urgent Letter from Zimbabwe

2002-11-21 Thread Dr.Wilfred Mboyo
Sir,

 URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP

Firstly, I have to introduce myself to you. My name is Dr Wilfred Mboyo from Zimbabwe.
I
was the chairman of contract review panel in my country before the problem of the land
reform program.
Before the escalation of the situation in Zimbabwe I recovered $16.8Million US dollars
from
over inflated contracts by some government officials. But I was a member of the
opposition
party the MDC(Movement for Democratic Change), and the ruling Party, (ZANU PF) has
been against us. So I had to flee the country for a neighbouring African Country which
I am

Before the escalation of the situation in Zimbabwe I had not reported The recovery of

before I
can get a visa to fly down. So that we can share this money.

I have agreed to give you 10%,which would be ($1.6Million dollars) of this Money for
your

The past two weeks have seen a consistent, international effort to halt the
U.S. war on Iraq. This past weekend, tens of thousands of people joined
separate marches in 25 cities in Canada. In the UK, peace activists managed
to board a nuclear submarine and surrender themselves as part of a
disarmament campaign. Other UK activists are targetting embassies to
highlight the connection between the U.S.-led war and the international
crackdown on dissent. On November 16, they held a mock wedding for George W
Bush and Lee Raymond, CEO of Exxon Mobil, known around the world as 'Esso'
petrol, at the US embassy. A student walk-out is expected in the United
States on Wednesday, November 20.

[IP] Pentagon transcript on TIA (fwd)

Subject: [IP] Pentagon transcript on TIA

http://usinfo.state.gov/cgi-bin/washfile/display.pl?p=/products/washfile/latest&f=02112003.tlt&t=/products/washfile/newsitem.shtml

Q: Can you help us to better understand what Admiral Poindexter's
operation is all about, and how far along he is in developing his
program or plan or -- (inaudible)?

Clarke: I can't, but I have someone here who can. (Laughter.) And
Undersecretary Pete Aldridge, who was thinking: Okay, I've been here
for a while, time for me to leave -- (laughter) -- would be happy to
address that question.

(Laughter.)

Sir?

Q: What's a nice guy like him doing in place this?

Clarke: That's right.

Aldridge: I asked the same question.

Well, I -- we anticipated that this issue may come up, so I have
prepared a very short statement, and then if that statement doesn't
clarify what we're trying to do, I'll stay up here for a few minutes
for some questions.

My statement goes along the following: The war on terror and the
tracking of potential terrorists and terrorist acts require that we
search for clues of such activities in a mass of data. It's kind of a
signal-to-noise ratio. What are they doing in all these things that
are going on around the world? And we decided that new capabilities
and new technologies are required to accomplish that task. Therefore,
we established a project within DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research
Project Agency, that would develop an experimental prototype --
underline, experimental prototype, which we call the Total Information
Awareness System. The purpose of TIA would be to determine the
feasibility of searching vast quantities of data to determine links
and patterns indicative of terrorist activities.

There are three parts to the TIA project to aid in this anti-
terrorist effort. The first part is technologies that would permit
rapid language translation, such as you -- as we have used on the
computers now, we can -- there's voice recognition capabilities that
exist on existing computers.

The second part was discovery of connections between transactions --
such as passports; visas; work permits; driver's license; credit card;
airline tickets; rental cars; gun purchases; chemical purchases -- and
events -- such as arrest or suspicious activities and so forth. So
again, it try to discover the connections between these things called
transactions.

And the third part was a collaborative reasoning-and-decision- making
tools to allow interagency communications and analysis. In other
words, what kind of decision tools would permit the analysts to work
together in an interagency community?

The experiment will be demonstrated using test data fabricated to
resemble real-life events. We'll not use detailed information that is
real. In order to preserve the sanctity of individual privacy, we're
designing this system to ensure complete anonymity of uninvolved
citizens, thus focusing the efforts of law enforcement officials on
terrorist investigations. The information gathered would then be
subject to the same legal projections (sic) currently in place for the
other law enforcement activities.

Q: Protections.

Aldridge: Protection. Legal protections.

It is absurd to think that DARPA is somehow trying to become another
police agency. DARPA's purpose is to demonstrate the feasibility of
this technology. If it proves useful, TAI <[sic: TIA]> will then be
turned over to the intelligence, counterintelligence and law
enforcement communities as a tool to help them in their battle against
domestic terrorism.

The bottom line is, this is an important research project to determine
the feasibility of using certain transactions and events to discover
and respond to terrorists before they act. We all share the
frustration associated with vague warnings of terrorist threats. We
hope that TIA will help the U.S. government narrow those generic --
genetic reports -- generic reports down to advance notice of specific
threatening acts. I hope that's clear.

Q: Pete?

Aldridge: Yes?

Q: There are two things that bother a lot of people -- one, the "Big
Brother" aspect, and if you can talk about possible checks and
balances -- the second thing is the choice of the man to lead it. I
mean, Admiral Poindexter was under a cloud. You know, he was a
convicted felon, even though the conviction was overturned on appeal,
for lying to the Congress. Is he the kind of guy you'd really want in
a situation like this, who has a record of lying and handling
untruths?

Aldridge: I'll repeat, again, that what John Poindexter is doing is
developing a tool. He's not exercising the tool. He will not exercise
the tool. That tool will be exercised by the intelligence,
counterintelligence and law enforcement agencies. So --

Marini needs killing.

2002-11-21 Thread Matthew X
On November 5, the second degree of the Marini trial against several dozen
anarchists in Italy began. For those who are unfamiliar with this trial,
Marini is a public prosecutor who began an investigation against anarchists
over eight years ago. After years of harassment, searches, confiscation of
literature and other materials including computers, electronic spying,
imprisonment without charges, etc., the first degree of the trial began.
Anarchists faced charges of participation in an armed gang and of
subversive association, as well as for specific crimes. The prosecutor’s
case was based largely upon a the testimony of a “penitent” who was in a
desperate situation and could not keep her story straight and a couple of
other questionable witnesses, and the misrepresentation of the title of a
section of a piece written by Alfredo Bonanno. At he end of the first
degree of the trial the judges dropped the charges of armed gang and
subversive association, but sentenced several comrades for specific crimes.
Some of these comrades are currently in prison. The second degree of the
trial is an appeal that allows the prosecutor to reinstate all charges and
present new evidence. The following is a translation of a summary of the
second hearing of the second degree trial that occurred on November 12. The
third hearing is scheduled to happen tomorrow, November 21:
12 NOVEMBER: SECOND HEARING OF THE APPEAL OF THE MARINI TRIAL
Initially, Marini digressed again on the need to hear Giovani Barcia, who,
according to him, could make “ interesting revelations”. One of the defense
lawyers at this point noted that Barcia is not at all disposed to make
declarations of any type, and that his only desire is to return Spain as
soon as possible. In consequence, Marini insisted on the importance of
hearing the prison doctor at Vallette, who received a mail-bomb in 1998, as
a witness since this bomb could be the work of the spectral ORAI [the
alleged armed gang—translator]. The president of the court denied this
possibility, from the moment that the proved to have nothing to do with the
reasons for which the appeal was demanded. After these requests, Marini
began his address, which lasted about four hours, during which he dwelled
upon some elements of the prosecution’s theorem: from the “revelations of
Namsetchi (the “penitent” direct by the ROS [special police
organization—translator]), to the Silocchi kidnapping, to the “double
level” that would be characteristic of the anarchist organization, the
totality frequently emphasizing the similarity to the trials for terrorism
in years past. It is to be noted that during the first hearing held on
November 5, Marini also spoke for at least a half hour about Barcia who
does not enter into the appeal trial at all since for him the trial of the
first degree has barely started; and Marini certainly did not forget to
mention the robbery in Cordoba (Spain) in 1996, and the two police that
were killed in the gun battle. All this continually enriching the speech
with descriptions relating to the defendants: robbers, kidnappers,
murderers, surely with the intent of impressing the jury. It was certainly
not pleasant for us to hear the proclamations of Marini, and it was even
less pleasant to see our comrades (Carlo Tesseri, Gregorian Garagin,
Francesco Porcu currently imprisoned for other crmes) behind glass through
which it was truly difficult to communicate; but we still wanted to stay in
the hall because this is the only way to see and greet comrades who have
already spent so many years in the fatherland’s jails. To them all, our
solidarity, complicity and affection. The next hearing has been set for
today, Thursday, November 21. (Edited by : Anarchist Black Cross)

I suppose They could seize control of all the local Basestations, and
not

Re: Onion Self-Censorship

2002-11-21 Thread Marc Branchaud
Having read the article I can't help but consider more benign reasons
for its removal...

1. It's not funny.

2. It's jokes are in pretty poor taste.

3. Michael Bay got his lawyers to send a letter to the Onion.

The situation raises a mildly interesting issue. The Onion, for
whatever reason (nefarious or not), decided they wanted to pull the
article. However, they obviously failed as I was able to read it.
Google's link still works even now.

I wonder: if The Onion were to attempt to pull an article due to a court
order, or some such, and yet the article persisted in various caches
here and there, to what extent could The Onion be charged with not
complying with the order?

Another angle: If Bay threatened to sue the Onion unless they pulled the
article, would he still have a case against them because of Google's cache?

Worldwide Caution (fwd)

2002-11-21 Thread Jim Choate

-- Forwarded message --
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 07:56:44 -0500
From: PA List Manager <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Worldwide Caution

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

Worldwide Caution
November 20, 2002

This Worldwide Caution supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated November 6. It
is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the need to remain vigilant and to
remind them of the continuing threat of terrorist actions that may target
civilians. This Worldwide Caution expires on May 20, 2003.
In light of the statement released by Usama Bin Ladin on November 12, 2002,
the Department of State reminds Americans that U.S. citizens and interests
remain at increased risk of terrorist attacks, including by groups with
links to Usama Bin Ladin's Al-Qaida organization. Terrorist actions may
include, but are not limited to, suicide operations or kidnappings. These
individuals have proved that they do not distinguish between official and
civilian targets. Because security and security awareness have been elevated
within the United States, the terrorist may target U.S. interests overseas.
Recent events include the terrorist attacks in Kuwait and Bali. We remind
American citizens to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security
and to exercise caution.
On November 14, 2002, the State of Virginia executed Mir Ahmad Kasi, a
Pakistani national, who was convicted in 1997 of the 1993 murders of two CIA
employees. The potential exists for retaliatory acts against U.S. or other
foreign interests in response to the execution.
Attacks on places of worship and schools, and the murders of private
American citizens and other westerners, demonstrate that as security is
increased at official U.S. facilities, terrorists and their sympathizers
will seek softer targets. These may include facilities where Americans or
possibly other foreigners are generally known to congregate or visit, such
as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools,
hotels, outdoor recreation events or resorts and beaches. Americans should
increase their security awareness when they are at such locations, avoid
them, or switch to other locations where Americans in large numbers
generally do not congregate. There is a possibility that American citizens
may be targeted for kidnapping or assassination.
U.s. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert.
These facilities may temporarily close or suspend public services from time
to time to review their security posture and ensure their adequacy. In those
instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide
emergency services to American citizens. Americans are urged to monitor the
local news and maintain contact with the nearest American embassy or
consulate.
As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security
threats to Americans overseas, it shares credible threat information through
its Consular Information Program documents ,
available on the internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to
information on the Internet, U.S. travelers can hear recorded information by
calling the Department of State in Washington, D.C. at 202-647-5225 from
their touch-tone telephone, or receive information by automated telefax by
dialing 202-647-3000 from their fax machine.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

2002-11-21 Thread STANLEY OKEKE
Dear Sir,

RE: YOUR ASSISTANCE FOR REMMITTANCE OF $28.5M

I am the manager, of bills of exchange at the foreign remittance department
of the ECO BANK PLC. I have the assurance that you are capable
and reliable enough to champion an impending transaction.

In my department, we discovered an abandoned sum of US$28.5m (twenty
eight million and five hundred thousand US dollars), in an account that
belonged to one of our former customers who died along with his entire
family in a plane crash, in November, 1997. Since we received the information
about his death, we have expected his next of kin to come forward and
claim his money, as enshrined in our banking laws and regulations. So
far nobody has come forward, and we cannot release the funds unless someone
applies as the next of kin as stipulated in our guidelines. Unfortunately,
we have discovered that all his supposed next of kin or relations died
alongside with him in the plane crash, and effectively leaving nobody
behind for the claim.

It is consequent upon this discovery that other officials and I in my
department decided to make this business proposal to you and release
the money to you as the next of kin or relation of the deceased person,
for safety and subsequent disbursement, since nobody is coming forward
for it, and the money is not reverted into the bank’s treasury as unclaimed.
The bank’s regulation stipulates that if after five years, such money
remains unclaimed; the money will be reverted to the bank’s treasury
as unclaimed fund.

The request for a foreigner as the next of kin in this transaction is
predicated upon the fact that the said customer was a foreign national,
and no citizen of this country can claim to be the next of kin of a foreigner.
We agree that 30% of the total sum we be given to you for your assistance
in facilitating this transaction. My colleagues and I are going to retain
60% of the total sum, and 10% will be set aside for the expenses that
we may incur in facilitating the remittance.

To enable us effect this remittance, you must first apply as the next
of kin of the deceased. Your application will include your bank co-ordinates,
that is, your bank name, bank address and telex, your bank account.
You will include your private telephone no. and fax no., for easy and
effective communication during this process. My colleagues and I will
visit your country for disbursement according to the agreed ratio, when
this transaction is concluded.

Upon the receipt of your response, I will send to you by fax, the text
of the application. I must not fail to bring to your notice the fact
that this transaction is hitch free, and that you should not entertain
fear as you are adequately protected from any form of embarrassment

Do respond to this letter today through my email address to enable us proceed with the
transaction.

Yours sincerely,
STANLEY OKEKE.

Depends on what (c) looks like and how it is obtained.
if it is a random jumble of characters (like a scramdisk) then you might
get away with claiming a key 'k is the otp key for it (and of course
given (c) and the required plaintext, 'k is trivial to construct)

if (c) is self-evidently in the format of a known encryption package
(pgp, smime, lots of others) then your attackers are not going to
believe they are really OTP encrypted

if the message is intercepted, not sniffed (ie, you never receive a copy
yourself) then you cannot construct 'k

Unauthorised access can be taken off by setting fake

the network?

 THURSDAY a.m.
  November 21, 2002

 Strong White Candle

During the rally yesterday, the two "sentiment tanks" for the market -- bonds and the VIX -- both dropped sharply. We're now seeing firmly established downward momentum in both, signaling a potentially strong advance for stocks.

The big "tell" for this market continues to be bonds. You can't trust a move in this market unless it's confirmed by stocks and bonds. We've got to take advantage of this incredible inverse relationship right now, as it's not always going to be like this. But while it's working, it's invaluable.

For insight into the bond market, Bloomberg's bond columnist Caroline Baum is not to be missed. Incredibly, her columns are available free on their web site. It's likely not to be there forever at that price (doesn't make sense!). Her latest piece looks at inflation measurements, and is the usual eye-opener.

The OEX had an important move up yesterday, establishing a strong foothold for an assault on higher levels. The immediate target is the previous high at OEX 472, and a push through there gives a clear look at OEX 490.

Most importantly, the OEX moved over that red candle at 464, and didn't collapse going into the close.

For traders weaned during the great bull market, this has certainly been an uptrend of a different color, with breakouts more often reversing into fakeouts. It's actually been tough for momentum players on both sides. Even the merest whiff of a support or resistance line has been repelling stocks away.

But yesterday's white candle is a strong hint that the bullish forces have gained the upper hand, and are gearing up for another run. Lately there has been a momentum-squasher at every turn, but if the cards fall right now, there should be another significant push higher.

From my "arm-waving" school of analysis comes a feeling that there are still many that doubt the sustainability of this rally. I monitor lots of sources, and most of them are really excellent market sages. All I can say is Rodney Dangerfield gets more respect than this rally. And I haven't seen a single person that's been bearish during this up move throw in the towel and go long, which is kinda sorta something I've been looking for as a warning sign that the end of the rally is near. But the bears are waiting this one out. If the market moves above OEX 472, then short positions are going to be hard to hold. Again, this is anecdotal, but it's worth a mention, I think.

Another point involves the VIX. It's dropping quickly at this point, and is now back down into the high 20s. We have to remember that this is the range the VIX likes to live in during a benign market environment. It's pretty rare historically for the VIX to spend any time over 30, much less spend weeks and months over that level. So a move into the 20s doesn't necessarily signal the end of this uptrend. It could be just the beginning of a new advance phase, actually.

Insight on the News Email Edition

2002-11-21 Thread Insight on the News
INSIGHT NEWS ALERT!

New stories from Insight on the News are now online.

http://www.insightmag.com/

...

Folks, I’m going to diverge a bit today. In case you don’t read the sports
pages, earlier this week The New York Times editorialized that Tiger Woods
should boycott the Masters golf tournament in the spring, unless the Augusta
National Country Club –the permanent home of the event -- admits women members.
Now, apart from the justice or injustice of it all, once again I sense some
hypocrisy from the newspaper on Times Square. After all, Tiger Woods plays golf
(extraordinarily well) for a living. Essentially, they’re telling him he should
deprive himself of a potentially lucrative payday for what they believe is a
moral principle.

But what about The New York Times? They’re in business to cover the news, and in
the sports world the Masters is big news. Especially if Tiger is leading on the
back nine. It’s safe to say that a certain number of people will buy The Times
in April to read about Tiger and the Masters. That’s why they have a sports
section and why they cover sporting events – to make more money. If I were
Tiger, I’d tell them, “Fine. I intend to pursue my vocation at the Masters. But
clearly, your moral position compels you not to cover the event. Even though
your circulation may decline a bit, and the Post’s may go up.” Let’s wait until
April and see what they do. (These comments don’t necessarily represent the
position of Insight magazine.)

Now for the front page. It seems like people can’t get enough of Tim Maier’s
Noah’s Ark/CIA story. It’s still posted for your reading pleasure.
http://www.insightmag.com/news/321357.html And I think you’ll be awestruck at
the logic of the L.A. judge who thinks aliens should work airport security.
http://www.insightmag.com/news/326698.html That’s it for now. Until then I’m
still your newsman in Washington. And still in the Bunker.

  BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

You may be surprised to receive this letter from me since you do
notknow me personally. The purpose of my introduction is that I am
TONY MORANDO,the first son of AKPAN JULIUS MORANDO,the most popular black farmer in
Zimbabwe who was recently murdered in the land dispute in my country.

I got your contact through network online hence decided
to write you. Before the death of my father,he had taken me to Johannesburg to deposit
the sum of US8.5 million (Eight million,Five Hundred thousand United States
dollars),in one of the private security company,as he foresaw the looming danger in
Zimbabwe this money was deposited in a box as gem stones to avoid much demurrage from
security company.

This amount was meant for the purchase of new machines and chemicals
for the Farms and establishment of new farms in Swaziland.

This land problem came when Zimbabwean President Mr.Robert Mugabe
introduced a new Land Act Reform wholly affecting the rich white
farmers and some few black farmers, and this resulted to the killing
and mob action by Zimbabwean war veterans and some lunatics in the
society. In fact a lot of people were killed because of this Land
reform Act for which my father was one of the victims.

It is against this background that,I and my family fled Zimbabwe
for fear of our lives and are currently staying in the Netherlands
where we are seeking political asylum and moreso have decided to transfer my father's
money to a more reliable foreign account.since the law of the Netherlands prohibits a
refugee (asylum seeker) to open any bank account or to be involved in any financial
transaction throughout the territorial zone of Netherlands,As the eldest son of my
father,I am saddled with the responsibility of seeking a genuine foreign account where
this money could be transferred without the knowledge of my government who are bent on
taking everything we have got.

The South African government seems to be playing along with them.I am faced with the
dilemma of moving this amount of money out of South Africa for fear of going through
the same experience in future, both countries have similar political history. As a
businessman,I am seeking for a partner who I have to entrust my future and that of
my family in his hands,I must let you know that this transaction is risk free.

If you accept to assist me and my family all I want you to do for me,is to make an
arrangements with the security company to clear the consignment(funds) from their
afiliate office here in the Netherlands as i have already given directives for the
consignment to be brought to the Netherlands from South Africa. But before then all
modalities will have to be put in place like change of ownership to the consignment
and more importantly this money I intend to use for investment.

I have two options for you.Firstly you can choose to have certain
percentage of the money for nominating your account for this transaction. Or you can
go into partnership with me for the proper profitable investment of the money in your
country.Whichever the
option you want, feel free to notify me.I have also mapped out 5%
of this money for all kinds of expenses incurred in the process
of this transaction.

If you do not prefer a partnership I am willing to give you 10% of the money while the
remaining 85% will be for my investment in your country.
Contact me with this E-mail address([EMAIL PROTECTED]),while I implore you to
maintain the absolute secrecy required in this transaction.

Thanks,GOD BLESS YOU

Yours Faithfully,

MR TONY MORANDO.

Someone may be sued for the original act, but not for failing to coerce
others into disremembering something they witnessed. The principle is
that third parties have no obligation to act to undo the acts of others.

(This is my understanding of deep legal principles, though I'm not a
lawyer and the law is evolving so rapidly toward fascism that things
may have changed completely. If the Red Queen orders the Doormouse to
forget the acts of others, what she says is the law.)

Another angle: If Bay threatened to sue the Onion unless they pulled
the
article, would he still have a case against them because of Google's
cache?

See above.

In practice, Google will remove an item if the submitting party is the
one to request the removal. Certain Usenet pests have been active in
demanding that posts they dislike be removed, and Google Groups will in
fact remove the items (rewrite history) if the submitter fills out a
Web form and requests the removal.

There have been no court cases that I am aware of (haven't searched,
don't have access to the lawyer engines) where a third party like
Google has ever been sued for committing the sin of having remembered a
public event and recounting its memories to others.

That finds a cached copy of the story that is no longer up on The Onion's site. I
believe that the article existed -- I saw the cached copy myself. I'm still not
finding any story, anywhere, that says The Onion pulled this or why they pulled it.

>That The Onion (www.theonion.com) no longer has the article which Google and other
>sites linked to is precisely the point of the story.

Again, what story? Where is the evidence that The Onion pulled this because of the
terrorism content? Maybe someone from Michael Bay's office threatened a defimation
suit and The Onion pulled the story because they didn't want to bother with a lawsuit.
Or maybe Michael Bay's brother-in-law-half-removed is dating someone at The Onion's
step-mother and asked for a friendly favor. Maybe someone at The Onion stole the
story from someone else, so it got pulled until they could sort out who actually wrote
the piece.

But hey, if it makes you feel better to state some sort of conspiracy to silence The
Onion given the complete and total lack of information, go for it.

Clearly, at least hygiene has progressed in the last 300 years.

To flesh this out a little more - the judge was Stephen Trott,
speaking on
September 18 2002 at the Commonwealth Club. Trott credits the torture

Hey, why not? Considering the state of the Bill of Rights and of

We've got secret courts, secret appeals courts, secret laws,
warrantless searches, roving wiretaps, so many laws that nearly
everyone is a felon in one way or another, selective prosecution,
Orwellian gibberings from FL about "The Evil Ones," proposals to data

the IRS and other government agencies (so much for tax returns being
not used except for taxes), more secret trials, persons being held
without access to lawyers and without charges being filed, and on and
on.

(* Not being a lawyer, though reading widely, I have never understand
this crap about how "the 4th Amendment does not apply to Alice if Bob
has the records." Perhaps _Alice_ cannot assert a 4th A. right, but
_Bob_ still has all 4th A. rights to be secure in his papers and
possessions, including his business records! If I have a letter sent by
Greg, Greg may not be able to assert a 4th A. right about his letter,
but Tim sure can! It became one of Tim's "papers and possessions" once
he received it. Ditto for business records, purchase records, etc. This
notion that K-Mart and Costco will be "sharing" customer purchase
records with the Heimatsecuritat and that the 4th Amendment does not
apply is ludicrous. Customers should, I think, organize boycotts of
K-Mart and have K-Mart eventually tell Big Brother "show us the
specific warrant based on probable cause for a specific customer." I
doubt this will happen.)

Dear friend,

REQUEST FOR URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP.

First, I must solicit your confidence in this transaction. This
is by virtue of its nature as being utterly confidential and top

in confidence of your ability and reliability to prosecute a
transaction
of great magnitude involving a pending business transaction requiring
maximum confidence.

We are top officials of the Federal Government Contract Review Panel
who are interested in importation of goods into our country with
funds which are presently trapped in Nigeria. In order to commence
this business we solicit your assistance to enable us RECIEVE the
said trapped funds ABROAD.

The source of this fund is as follows : During the regime of our
late head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, the government officials set
up companies and awarded themselves contracts which were grossly
over-invoiced in various Ministries. The NEW CIVILIAN Government
set up a Contract Review Panel (C.R.P) and we have identified a
lot of inflated contract funds which are presently floating in the
Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N). However, due to our position as
civil servants and members of this panel, we cannot acquire this
money in our names. I have therefore, been delegated as a matter
of trust by my colleagues of the panel to look for an Overseas
partner
INTO whose ACCOUNT the sum of US$31,000,000.00 (Thirty one Million
United States Dollars) WILL BE PAID BY TELEGRAPHIC TRANSFER. Hence
we are writing you this letter.

We have agreed to share the money thus:
1. 70% for us (the officials)
2. 20% for the FOREIGN PARTNER (you)
3. 10% to be used in settling taxation and all local and
foreign expenses.

It is from this 70% that we wish to commence the importation
business.Please
note that this transaction is 100% safe and we hope THAT THE FUNDS
CAN ARRIVE YOUR ACCOUNT in latest ten (10) banking days from the
date of reciept of the following information by E-MAIL
A SUITABLE NAME AND BANK ACCOUNT INTO WHICH THE FUNDS CAN BE PAID.

The above information will enable us write letters of claim and
job description respectively. This way we will use your companys
name to apply for payments and re-award the contract in your company
name.

We are looking forward to doing business with you and solicit your
confidentiality in this transaction.

Please acknowledge receipt of this letter using the above E-mail or
call me direct on 234-1-774-2913
I will bring you into the complete picture of this pending project
when I have heard from you.

We will,we will rock you...or at the very least nickle and dime you.

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 17 — The authorities are investigating whether vandals
who have swept through here in recent months, slashing tires, defacing
businesses and damaging construction equipment, were members of the Earth
Liberation Front, an environmental organization considered by the F.B.I. to
be one of America's most prolific domestic terrorist groups.

AND
Protesters and others swept up in mass arrests during September's
anti-globalization demonstrations filed suit yesterday, saying their rights
were violated. The suit accused District police, the city and federal
authorities of violating the constitutional rights of those at a Sept. 27
protest at Pershing Park, at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. It
said those arrested were surrounded and detained without cause and were
held in custody in often abusive conditions.

Ukraine: Journalist found dead. A journalist who went missing last month
has been found hanged in an apartment in Belarus. The journalist, Mykhailo
Kolomiyets, was the director of Ukrainski Novyny financial news agency in Kiev.
Kolomiyets went missing on October 21 and his colleagues appealed for
police help to find him, fearing he had been targeted because of his
agency's reporting.
Kolomiyets is the third prominent Ukrainian journalist to die in two years.

RSA BSAFE(R) Crypto-J 3.3.3 encryption software has received validation
that it conforms to the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)
140-1 security requirements for cryptographic modules. FIPS 140 validation
through the FIPS 140-1 Cryptographic Module Validation Program is required
before any technology vendor can provide federal departments and agencies
with information technology products. This requirement ensures agencies use
only tested cryptographic products and applications to protect sensitive
information in their computer and telecommunications systems.
With the FIPS validation, RSA BSAFE Crypto-J 3.3.3 licensees may use its
FIPS-approved standard public-key encryption algorithms, symmetric
encryption algorithms, message digest algorithms and other important
security components to obtain FIPS 140-1 validation for their own products.
The RSA BSAFE Crypto-J 3.3.3 validation removes many procurement and
technology deployment barriers for third parties developing and selling
secure software applications to U.S. and Canadian government agencies.

The FIPS 140-1 validation is an important step for RSA BSAFE Crypto-J

Hi,

I wrote to you quite a few days ago about a genuine NO RISK opportunity that enables
you to become a member for FREE and check out the member benefits: Fantastic discounts
on a wide variety of products at stores you use regularly.

There is no cost to join and no obligation (you can opt out at any time). And there is
no hype or false promises. Just a genuine buyer's club with a unique networking
opportunity: Receive a free position in the club's network and watch as others join
your downline. See how our innovative network building program works, allowing you to
augment explosively your income and multiply your free time after you upgrade your
membership (for only $25 per month charged to your credit card) and if you work at it.

How much are we making? Anywhere from $2,000US to $9,000US. We have people making
$10,000US and more every month - and they will keep earning that for the rest of their
lives if they do virtually nothing else except laze on the beach. But they got there
through hard work. That is all; they did not need special skills.

This is not income that is determined by luck, or work that is done FOR you - it is
all based on your effort. And this income is RESIDUAL - meaning that it continues each

UBIK is a book by Philip K. Dick.
In the book, the main character is continually receiving messages to imbibe
or otherwise apply the substance UBIK to himself. He is unaware (for most of
the book) that he has died and is in deep freeze, and that his boss Runciter
is sending him UBIK messages so that his consciousness won't rot too
quickly.

What's UBIK? D'you mean Dr. Seuss' "Ooblek"?

Grammar-based privacy/crypto

I have not been much for posting on the list until now (nothing much
other than opinions to add, and there seem to be plenty of those to
go around already), but Mr. Fairbrother's post demanded a response.

I am working on what I intend to be an industrial-strength,
open-source grammar-based generation toolkit, which might fit the bill
for the kind of thing he posted about (using grammars for privacy
applications). I'm only concerned with generation right now
and not parsing, but going in the other direction is on my list of
desired features. Unfortunately, I have a real day job and am trying
to get *something* good enough done in time to submit to CodeCon
(which deadline is coming up soon, I think). The goals of the toolkit
are to be highly reusable/usable in many contexts, high performance,
and extremely flexible.

I would be interested in knowing what kinds of features you envision
being useful from a toolkit such as this for your purposes. The toolkit
I'm building is in the form of a plain old library written in ANSI C,
with as few environmental dependencies as possible. There are two
main data structures: grammars (gram_t *), and grammar generators
(gram_gen_t *). Grammars can be constructed by API calls or by handing
a file or string containing eBNF to a function that knows how to turn
eBNF into a gram_t. Grammar generators are built from grammars, and
can have different generation strategies associated with them (random,
breadth first, depth first). Generation itself happens by means of
callbacks associated with terminals in the underlying grammar, so
the grammar can really be about anything, not just text (e.g. you could
write callbacks to generate musical tones, raw network traffic, geometric
shapes ala shape grammars (http://www.shapegrammar.org/) etc.).

I'm much fuzzier on how I would like the eventual parsing side of
the house to work, but I'm experienced enough in this subject generally
to build what I need when I finally figure out how I want it to
work exactly. In an ideal world, you hand a gram_t to a third API
that creates an acceptor for the grammar that is similarly insulated
from how the actual raw tokens are presented (same kind of callback-driven
fu I do for generators in the lexical analysis side of the house),
but I was also thinking it would be really cool to do some sort of
code generator instead (or use antlr or byacc or something).

One principle that I intend to follow is to make it easy to use
this toolkit to build up libraries of primitives that can be joined
together, so that common uses can be accomodated with as little
code on the part of the user as possible. For instance, although
there is nothing specific in the core with regard to generating
text (like e-mail), this is an obvious common usage (if only for
debugging), so there will be primitives in the library that make
it easy to "wire up" your grammar and get it to spit out text (I
was thinking of some XML-based config language that you could use
to associate dynamically-loaded primitives from some .so or .dll
by name with terminals, etc.).

If any of this jibes with the kind of things you're thinking about,
I'd appreciate hearing from you; although I have a head full of ideas
on what I'd like to do with it, it's always helpful to hear from
people with other perspectives who are thinking about similar
things. I find myself often working in a vacuum, late at night,
with nothing to go on but my own feeling of what is useful. Perhaps
it's time to delurk. In any event, if anyone besides Mr. Fairbrother
has any ideas, opinions or encouragement, it would be most welcome
(and yes, I am aware of Disappearing Cryptography - it was, along with
shape grammars, the source of much of my inspiration).

Re: Microsoft on Darknet

2002-11-21 Thread James A. Donald
--
According to Microsoft,

http://crypto.stanford.edu/DRM2002/darknet5.doc

Darknet is being undermined by free riders.

: : Peer-to-peer file sharing assumes that a
: : significant fraction of users adhere to the
: : somewhat post-capitalist idea of sacrificing their
: : own resources for the "common good" of the network.
: : Most free-riders do not seem to adopt this idea.
: : For example, with 56 kbps modems still being the
: : network connection for most users, allowing uploads
: : constitutes a tangible bandwidth sacrifice. One
: : approach is to make collaboration mandatory. For
: : example, Freenet [6] clients are required to
: : contribute some disk space. However, enforcing such
: : requirements without a central infrastructure is
: : difficult.

The obvious solution is to monetize the darknet services, with
very small payments, payments that would typically ad up to
five dollars a month for heavy users or heavy servers -- that
is to say, a half a gram of gold a month.

Mojo was intended to do this but it failed, I think it failed
because they failed to monetize mojo before it was introduced
as service management mechanism.

We should get an anonymous micropayment system working,
interconvertible to real money, or real e-gold, then apply it
to such applications as mixmasters and darknet.

Allegedly yodel is such a system, but yodel is connected to
e-rand, which is connected to some people who fail to inspire
me with confidence.

Make your PC create your paycheck!

2002-11-21 Thread chris1956gocalhs304
Hi -

You get emails every day, offering to show you how to make money.
Most of these emails are from people who are NOT making any money.
And they expect you to listen to them?

 Enough.

If you want to make money with your computer, then you should
hook up with a group that is actually DOING it. We are making
a large, continuing income every month. What's more - we will
show YOU how to do the same thing.

This business is done completely by internet and email, and you
can even join for free to check it out first. If you can send
an email, you can do this. No special "skills" are required.

How much are we making? Anywhere from $2000 to $9000 per month.
We are real people, and most of us work at this business part-time.
But keep in mind, we do WORK at it - I am not going to
insult your intelligence by saying you can sign up, do no work,
and rake in the cash. That kind of job does not exist. But if
you are willing to put in 10-12 hours per week, this might be
just the thing you are looking for.

This is not income that is determined by luck, or work that is
done FOR you - it is all based on your effort. But, as I said,
there are no special skills required. And this income is RESIDUAL -
meaning that it continues each month (and it tends to increase
 each month also).

Interested? I invite you to find out more. You can get in as a
free member, at no cost, and no obligation to continue if you
decide it is not for you. We are just looking for people who still
have that "burning desire" to find an opportunity that will reward
them incredibly well, if they work at it.

To grab a FREE ID#, simply reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and in the body of the email, write this phrase:

 "Please secure my free membership"

 Be sure to include:
 1. First name
 2. Last name
 3. Email address (if different from above)
 4. By submitting a request for a FREE DHS Club Membership, I agree
to accept email from the DHS Club for both their consumer and
 business opportunities.

We will confirm your position and send you a special report
as soon as possible, and also Your free Member Number.

 That's all there's to it.

We'll then send you info, and you can make up your own mind.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

 Sincerely,

 Chris Casiano

P.S. After having several negative experiences with network
marketing companies I had pretty much given up on them.
This is different - there is value, integrity, and a
REAL opportunity to have your own home-based business...
and finally make real money on the internet.

Don't pass this up..you can sign up and test-drive the
program for FREE. All you need to do is get your free membership.

It was, and as of an hour or two ago it was still on the Onion's

Yes. Clearly it's okay for torture warrants to exist -- as long as you're
a member of the political class that gets to approve them...

Color me dumb, but when I read the article, I assumed it was an satirical
op-ed piece that The Onion had gotten Michael Bay to write for them.

Even outrageous humor magazines do not generally fail to distinguish
comedy articles written by famous people for the magazine, from parodies
written by their own staff writers.

If I pick up a copy of "Hustler," for instance, I can tell that a Poem by
Charles Bukowski was in fact written by Charles Bukowski, and a liquor ad
in which Jerry Falwell celebrates losing his virginity to his mother in an
outhouse was not written by Jerry Falwell.

If Hustler started publishing its own poems as the work of Charles
Bukowski, he would no doubt be displeased, (well, actually he's been dead
a long time) but you get my point.

Do we actually know that Michael Bay didn't write this article, and have
second thoughts about it afterwards? I suppose he probably didn't, and it
was dumb of The Onion not to alter the spelling of his name, or do one of
the other common things used to alert the reader that parody mode is being
entered.

I know I'd probably be pissed if I found an article in The Onion being
passed off as something I had written, and my inbox started filling up
with hate mail from people who didn't know the difference.

At present, if the US wants someone terminally interrogated,
they ship him to Egypt and ask the Egyptians to do the
interrogation.

I am mildly suprised they do not ask the Afghans to do the
interrogations, since poems have been written concerning the
remarkable effectiveness of Afghan interrogations.
