INSIGHT NEWS ALERT!

Folks, I’m going to diverge a bit today. In case you don’t read the sports
pages, earlier this week The New York Times editorialized that Tiger Woods
should boycott the Masters golf tournament in the spring, unless the Augusta
National Country Club –the permanent home of the event -- admits women members.
Now, apart from the justice or injustice of it all, once again I sense some
hypocrisy from the newspaper on Times Square. After all, Tiger Woods plays golf
(extraordinarily well) for a living. Essentially, they’re telling him he should
deprive himself of a potentially lucrative payday for what they believe is a
moral principle.

But what about The New York Times? They’re in business to cover the news, and in
the sports world the Masters is big news. Especially if Tiger is leading on the
back nine. It’s safe to say that a certain number of people will buy The Times
in April to read about Tiger and the Masters. That’s why they have a sports
section and why they cover sporting events – to make more money. If I were
Tiger, I’d tell them, “Fine. I intend to pursue my vocation at the Masters. But
clearly, your moral position compels you not to cover the event. Even though
your circulation may decline a bit, and the Post’s may go up.” Let’s wait until
April and see what they do. (These comments don’t necessarily represent the
position of Insight magazine.)

Now for the front page. It seems like people can’t get enough of Tim Maier’s
Noah’s Ark/CIA story. It’s still posted for your reading pleasure.
http://www.insightmag.com/news/321357.html And I think you’ll be awestruck at
the logic of the L.A. judge who thinks aliens should work airport security.
http://www.insightmag.com/news/326698.html That’s it for now. Until then I’m
still your newsman in Washington. And still in the Bunker.
