Re: Stus-List Do I really need OPV Valve on LPG tanks
Rick, NFPA 58 LP Gas Code (2011 edition) says all tanks have to have OPD protection, with the exceptions of cylinders used for powered industrial trucks and industrial welding and cutting. With that, I think you would be hard pressed to find a facility in the US that would refill an old style tank. The upside is that it is an easy refit. I got a great deal on a Flavel stove from a friend who decided to install a 3 burner model in his trawler after already purchasing the two burner stove I bought from him. That made propane a "when I can get to it" priority project. But I just bought two 6-pound aluminum tanks from another boater, and that has raised the priority to "Before I leave for the Chesapeake in June". The tanks I bought are new, and have the "traditional" valve with the round handle and pressure relief. The seller's reason for selling them was that he had been told he needed to convert the tanks to the OPV valve that is used on the tank for your barbeque grill, and he did not want to go to the trouble and expense. Allegedly, propane suppliers cannot legally refill tanks with the older style valves. I was in the forklift business when the OPV valve was introduced, and my recollection is that the valve I have is legal for motive power and marine use so no change in the valves is required. Does anyone have definitive experience with the valve issue, or can you point me to where the requirements are published? Started the topsides this week. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Most of the shear was ground down to the cloth for exploratory inspection. The existing paint was cracking in a lot of areas. Fortunately it was mostly only gelcoat cracking. There is one spot that we found wet balsa core on the starboard side just ahead of the transom. This was exposed, found the dry margins, cored, filled and re-glassed. Only a couple of minor blisters on the vertical areas of the topsides. http://www.flickr.com/photos/46147579@N08/sets/72157632149487011/ The project committee (wife & two teenage daughters) want me to consider changing the color scheme. For normal use though, you really need a windlass with a hook that big. -- As for MV and environs anchorages - Edgartown hates it when you anchor, but if you've got a good dinghy (or don't mind a long ride) you can go up beyond the mooring field and anchor there. It's a fabulous protected anchorage, but the harbormaster will sometimes tell you that you can't anchor there. (Could have something to do with him getting paid to rent mooring balls.) You can also anchor outside the harbor, but if there's any chance of north in the wind I wouldn't do it. (Disclosure: That's the only place, in zillions of nights at anchor, where Bojangles has dragged - because I stupidly trusted the harbormaster's weather forecast rather than consulting it myself) We prefer Vineyard Haven, where there's lots of room to anchor (outside the breakwater, but still quite sheltered) and it's not quite so touristy. My son's also a Black Dog fanatic, so VH is a mecca for him. The beaches on the Vineyard are great, but you need transportation to get there. If you have bikes, you'll get good use out of them on MV. If not, renting bikes is strongly recommended. Also, the bus service around the island is also good. Cuttyhunk is certainly a good stop, too, on the way there. You can buy fresh stripers on the dock there if you've been unsuccessful with your trolling. (Don't ask me how I know this) Have a great trip... Rob, Thanks for that info.that is great news! When I bought the boat a few years back, I looked for these documents with no luck. I will most definitely help defray the cost by joining the museum. Day one of stripping MIRAGE deck hardware complete, albeit a partial day. Estimating I will need the full four day weekend to finish. You may be interested to know that earlier this summer I picked up an additional 60 rolls of original C&C drawings from Tartan Marine in Ohio to add to the C&C Collection at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, ON. As you may know, Tartan acquired the assets of C&C in 1996, and part of the assets were all the drawings from 1973 to 1996. I'm cataloguing these additional 60 rolls of drawings at home before delivering them to the Museum for save keeping and to enter into their data base. One of the 24 rolls of drawings that I delivered to the Museum last week was the Northeast 39. This roll contained the Hull Lines, Deck Lines, Sailplan, Deck Plan, Accommodation Plan, Construction Plan, Spars General Drawing, and two rudder drawings. If you want to obtain copies of any of these drawings please go to the Marine Museum website (www.marmuseum.ca/) and contact them directly by email or phone. Membership to the Museum would also be greatly appreciated as a means to help preserve and eventually digitize this extensive collection of C&C drawings, photos, slides, and memorabilia. In addition to the Northeast 39, those 24 rolls of drawings included the C&C 24, C&C 29, C&C 32, C&C 33, C&C 51, several C&C 27 Mk I, II, and III drawings, the 1994 C&C 30, the 1978 Canada's Cup winner Evergreen, Baltic 39, Landfall 39, 42, and 43, as well as all 40 original drawings of the MEGA 30, and the many Mega Variants, and other less well known projects. Of course, this is just the latest addition to the already extensive collection of C&C original drawings held in the C&C Collection at the Marine Museum in Kingston. I'm in the process of cataloguing the remaining 32 rolls of drawings in my possession, and when completed, will also deliver those to the Museum. Re: Stus-List So New England retirement/harbor perspectives
I grew up in Newport...moved to Little Compton (lowest property taxes in RI) 10 years ago...still moor in Brenton Cove (Newport). I will most likely move back when my girls go to college. I work in Melville...only a few marinas in Portsmouth. It takes me 90 minutes to get from Newport Harbor to New England Boatworks in Melville. From Newport Harbor...23 miles to Block Island...45 to the Vineyard...another 20 to Nantucket. Draft is not an issue anywhere nearby Newport...gets a little thin over in East Greenwich/Warwick areas farther north in the bay. Check Realtor.com for housing ideas. The mounting pole and hardware ended up being about half the total cost of the RADAR installation. That stuff is EXPENSIVE. It has held up remarkably well though. I advise that you price it all out before you jump in. When shopping for which RADAR to buy, I took note that almost all the RADAR domes I saw on commercial fishing boats were Furuno. Turns out that was a good tip. I'm now half hoping that it will break so I can upgrade to a new color HD model. Now that I have the mount installed, it isn't as daunting a prospect, as far as either cost or labor to move up. I just need an excuse. I'm a cruiser, not a racer, and I don't really mind sailing in adverse conditions. I'm often headed out when others are headed in. The RADAR is something I could not do without. Bear in mind that operating and correctly reading a RADAR display requires practice. Like reading X-rays, you need to learn how to interpret what you see. Is that fat blob a navaid, or a tanker? I use mine often even when the conditions are crystal clear, just so I can compare what is on the screen to what I see with the naked eye. Re: Stus-List Stanchion removal
Derek, I did this with mine last winter. I have solid aluminum stanchions in SS pocket type bases. My fabricator tried soaking, heat, cutting the bottom out and pushing with a 30 ton press...all to no avail. He eventually cut the base vertically and was able to press it out. He re welded and polished it and it looks as good as new. Re: Stus-List America's Cup.
I had lunch today with my boss Tom Rich who was crew on Liberty in 1983. He likens the 83 regatta to what we are watching now, a monumental comeback. Liberty was up 3-1 and eventually lost to Australia 4-3. Tom said Liberty went into the finals as fast as they were going to get the boat to go and they watched Australia II get better and faster every race. Hopefully Oracle can pull it off tomorrow! ___ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com

At $650 a kit it isn’t cheap, but it is a lot less than a pair of Harken 56s or Lewmar 58s. Practical Sailor wrote a very favorable article on the conversion kits, and their tester was Ralph Narano who had them installed on his personal boat. So I’m pretty confident they will work out for me. There is one boat locally that has them installed on a pair of Barient 28s. The owners like them, but they are relatively new sailors so they may not have a real standard for comparison to purpose built self-tailing winches. How is the 3rd speed activated on your 32-3s? The jaws and line stripper in the kit cover the entire top of the winch drum. Will this interfere with the 3rd speed?
