Stus-List Hydro locked

2015-10-21 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List

David

I have a 3 HM on my 36 and it actually had spend more than a few days submerged
underwater. Although in my case it filled with water slowly as the boat
settled under the water. As soon as the boat came up, the engine was pickled
in oil. Once the oil was pumped out, we started it right away and all is
fine. I didn't have any engine troubles this year.

Good luck

Stus-List Propane and cabin heat

2015-11-05 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Steve,

I just replaced the propane system on my 36 and also installed the Dickson 9000
on the forward bulkhead and we love it. We sail off of Halifax so it's often
damp and foggy. The heater does a great job of keeping us dry and takes the
chill off too. It really made the boat more comfortable.

The PO had installed a propane locker in the rear port side of the helm seat,
however much to my horror the locker was vented into the bilge and was
connected with Tee's and hose clamps. (I rerouted it for its own vent) As per
Fred's comments you will need a regulator etc.

I went to a local hose company (hose fittings Canada)in Halifax and they made a
custom 40 foot hose with proper brass fittings, a T assembly, 15 foot hose(for
the galley stove), solenoid and regulator.

It ended up being quite an easy installation although it was a bit of a pain
fishing the hose throughout the boat. I chose to run it along the starboard
side of the boat. I chose this as it is easier to access for inspection and
also didn't want a propane hose running through the bilge.

I would suggest that you don't screw around with the hoses/fittings and ensure
they are properly made.

Propane on a boat can be deadly if not properly respected.I also have 2
sniffers in the boat, one near each appliance. This system I hard wired
directly to my battery switch. I figured if the power is on they should be
working as well.

As for the 1 lb propane. I found an adaptor that I keep aboard in case my main
cylinder runs dry and I can connect a 1 lb cylinder for short term use. Keep
in mind every time you attach or remove a 1 lb cylinder a little gas escapes
which would end up collecting inside the boat over time. I wouldn't want to
be near by when that little bit of propane reached the level needed to ignite.

The heater was well worth the investment. Feel free to email me off list if
you want to discuss further.

Stus-List C&C 36 ceiling panels

2016-01-26 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hi Steve.

My panels on my C & C 36 have been replaced. The originals were 1/8 of an
inch plywood(although it looks more like wood paneling type material) covered
with a vinyl/ foam pad. I was fortunate to have my existing panels as a
template. I used 1/8 plywood and went to a fabric store and purchased a few
yards of marine fabric/vinyl. a spray adhesive to attach the fabric to the new
panel. The original panel had little plastic caps that fit over the screws
which I was able to recycle and use again.

I would think 1/4 inch wood would be a little more difficult to bend to the
curve of the top of the liner.

Good luck with the project.

Stus-List Rebedding c&c 36 windows

2015-05-25 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hi

I am the proud new owner of a C&C 36 and the windows leak quite badly. In my
old Tanzer 8.5 they were easy to Rebed as there were frames. It appears on
the 36 the windows are sandwiched between the outer and inner cabin top. I
would rather do this correctly as opposed to a temporary fix.

Thanks

Jim

Sorry about the reply on the last thread I could hardly follow the replys
and I know better. The ports are as you described sealed into a moulded
recess on the cabin top. I think actually from your description now I
understand how they will come out.

I am doing a complete refit of the boat so I will add it to the list of
projects. Although the refit is mostly done.

Mike, we bought Silver Tassie last fall. No comments please on her
condition. :)

Stus-List C&C 36 centreboard refit

2015-09-16 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hi Rino

I actually just did a full refit on a 1981 C&C 36. I purchased the boat after
she sank in Bedford Basin (in Halifax)last fall.

The hull is cored and is cored under the waterline as well. It seems that C&C
did this well as there has been no de lamination of the hull.

As you can imagine most systems had to be replaced including electrical,
plumbing and propane.

I did plumb in a propane system however, primarily because the old system was
scary with hose clamps and a number of T junctions. I had a hose company make
new hoses and attach all fittings so they are properly done. This included a
40 foot hose to the forward bulkhead for a propane furnace.

there is also HMP Marine in Ontario that sells a number of C&C original type
parts.

I documented the entire process with before and after pictures.
One outcome is that I now know the entire boat and every aspect of each system.

Stus-List Original gate valves

2016-05-01 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
I need some guidance.I was in the process of trying to dismantle the
original c and c valves on the cockpit drains as they were seized and have been
worried about potential flooding.Ion the process I have the valve half out.
Meaning the rubber gasket where you use the screw handle on the backside to
push out the valve and gasket. The t handle broke off. Am I now going to
have to remove and replace the entire valve? I think the original was bonded
with 5200 to the hull. and am working on the starboard side through the bottom
of the quarter berth.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Stus-List Seacock feplacwmwnt

2016-05-09 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List

Hey there

A couple of weeks ago I had asked a couple questions about the valves/seacocks.
Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions.

Both cockpit drain hoses were replaced. The old hoses were virtually held
together by the wire and the rubber had been very cracked and damaged.I
don't think they would have lasted the season.
It turns out the seacocks themselves were in very good condition.

I launch on Wednesday and am moving to a new Marina about 50 km closer to my
home.

Thanks again for the advice

Stus-List Painting the interior

Hey listers,

I am considering painting the interior of State of Bliss. As some know she
spent a bit of time underwater. Some of the panels are a little water
spotted. Any thoughts on using a primer like kills or Binz on the areas.
The areas in question are the parts that had the laminate wood or were off
white. None of the teak will be painted. I live in Eastern Canada so winter
temperatures will play. I do not want to be painting and scraping every
spring.

Your advice and guidance would be appreciated

Stus-List Raw water strainer clogged

2016-07-24 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hey guys. I could use some advice.I was heading back to the marina today
and noticed the exhaust from the raw water had mostly steam. Engine is a
yanmar 3 HM. 30 adapted with a closed system.

The raw water strainer sucked in a major gob of seaweed. I thought that was
the issue. Removed the hose from the water pump and connected another hose
and when the engine is running sucks the water out of the bowl but not when
attached to the strainer. Would that sound as though there is another
blockage along the inlet hose?
Any advice or suggestions. It would be much appreciated.

On a side note we had just returned from a weeks cruise across the gulf of
Saint Lawrence and the engine ran fine (thank god)

Stus-List Adding refrigeration.

2016-08-07 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello listers

I am sure this has been discussed before. We have decided to add
refrigeration to State of Bliss. Last winter I re-insulated the ice box with
a dramatic improvement to keeping ice.

We generally do coastal cruising spending 3-4 days away from the dock.

For those of you that have refrigeration or added it, where do you keep the
compressor or what system have you used? I have thought of the lazerette
behind the ice box, however on the exterior bulkhead is the heat exchanger for
the engine.

I would also appreciate any insights in the installation

As for additional room we have had 8 sitting around the table for dinner.

I would also agree with Joe that age isn't necessarily as important as how the
boat was maintained. I have seen newer boats that are in pretty rough
condition that I wouldn't want to sail out of the harbour.

(And for ease of installation it fit in the existing hole.) Up here in Nova

Stus-List Lighting and pumps

2017-06-23 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hey Listers.

I was very fortunate last week. I noticed a drip coming from the seawater pump
on my Yanmar 3HM. Anyway I removed it as I thought the impeller was going.
Turns out the seals were just about dissolved apart and the bearings were
almost seized. I took it in to a local shop and 60 bucks later and 40 in parts
it is as good as new.

My question today is that I noticed when we got back in tonight the starboard
running light apears substantially dimmer compared to the port light or the
stern light. These are led lights. Any ideas why this would happen?
Connections seem fine

Thanks

Stus-List Princesss auto led lights

2017-07-05 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
I installed these exact lifhts during the refurbishment of my C&C 36. They
work perfectly. I installed a double in the galley as I wanted better lighting
for cooking and meal prep. After 3 years of regular use I have not had any
issue at all.I would certainly recommend them as well.I did install
other lights in the rest of the boat as I found them super bright.

Stus-List Painting the headliner

2017-10-02 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello fellow listers

I am considering painting the headliner of our C&C 36 as it is looming a little
shabby. I would rather paint it as opposed to replacing it.

The headliner is probably the original so it would be the wooden panels with
the fabric leatherette look.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Stus-List Foul weather gear

2016-12-31 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List

Happy new year everyone!I would be interested in people's opinion on foul
weather gear. I am looking to replace upgrade my Gil coastal cruising coat.
It seems that it is no longer water repellant and reapplying the waterproofing
doesn't work. I like a number of the features on the coat but I feel it should
last more than 3 full seasons.Up here in Nova Scotia we have pretty cool
and damp weather so for a lot of the season I wear my gear. I won't be doing
any ocean crossings but we sail well into October as well.
I don't have a Bimini and am usually the one at the helm during inclement
weather

Stus-List Stripping the bottom

2017-05-06 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hey everyone.

I am in the middle of stripping the bottom paint off of my C&C 36. I would
day tjere is 30 years of bottom paint. There are no blisters juat that muck
of thr oaint was flaking off. Once done I will be doing the barrier coat and
reapplying the bottom paint.I burned through the gelcoat in a few places
while sanding.

My question is do i need to apply a coat of gelcoat to those places or will the
barrier coat protect the glass and prevent moisture intrusion.

I can honestly say this won't be a job that I will tackle again on this boat.

Stus-List Separation between engine

2017-06-08 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
A few of you have mention that you have netting to separate the engine and
lazerette. Does the engine need the airflow from the lazerette for cooling?
The engines are usually raw water or fresh water cooled as opposed to air
cooled. I was just curious? I have a 36 and have had a few items fall onto
the shaft and like others mentioned burned a bit of plastic. Fortunately
lines are on the outboard side away from the engine area. It is one of those
things I would like to do as well, but have more pressing projects.

Stus-List Dirty fuel

2018-11-14 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
I had a challenge a few years ago when I bought the boat with excess water in
the fuel tank and lines.I actually removed the fuel tank completely and
took it to a shop that steam cleaned the fuel tank or whatever it is they do to
clean a fuel tank. There was a fair amount of crap on the bottom of the tank
that had accumulated over 20 years of use.

It certainly wasn't an expensive activity. The biggest challenge was getting
the fuel tank out of the lazarette.
That was about 5 years ago and nothing is showing in the racor.

Stus-List Leaks and ceiling panels

2019-04-20 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello Listers

We have pretty major water intrusion coming in on the port side by the bulkhead
in the salon of our C&C 36. The water is gathering on the edge of the
fibreglass headliner and running into the storage cupboards. I have rebedded
the chain plates and handrails. The stanchions are too far outboard. Any
suggestions?

Also this has been discussed before. Has anyone replaced ceiling panels and
used velcro to hold them in? What was the best material? I have thought of
those fibreglass panels found at home depot but seems pretty messy to cut.

Hey everyone. I have a question on charging my batteries. I have a 3

The charger is a powermania turbo 320 which has leads for 3 separate batteries.

Current set up is 1 is connected to the house bank and the other lead is on the
start battery. With regards to the house bank should I have leads connected
to each of the house bank or the positive on one battery and negative on the
other. It was originally set up as both leads connected to the positive and
negative of one of the 2 batteries in the house bank.

Yes there is lots of water in most places. You are correct 2 locks and a
swing bridge. There is another swing bridge to get get to the Baddeck area.
There are probably a 1000 different coves anchorages that you could explore.
There is minimal tide once in the lakes.

Dwight
Craymon islands are on the to do list this year. We are at Clarke's cove
tomorrow. Prob next week after we leave Baddeck.

Hopefully we have good weather for the next 2 weeks.

My sailing season ended the night of May 17 when we got 12 inches of localized
rain in 2 hours. A short time later the Admiral, Lexie the cat crew and I were
sitting on the bed watching stuff float through our bedroom in 18 inches of
water. A few days later after loading two roll off dumpsters full of saturated
carpet and pad, drywall, insulation, furniture, appliances and a lot of
memories, we had a mostly empty house with some patio furniture and a bed. A
few weeks, two large commercial dehumidifiers, lots of fans, portable heaters
and a good moisture meter and we had a dry house.

We've installed new drywall, textured it, painted it and replaced all the door
trims, baseboards, etc. that were removed during the drying process. Waiting
on flooring now.

Bottom line, if you think refurbishing/rebuilding a boat is work, try restoring
a flooded house while you're still living in it. I haven't seen Touche' in

Stus-List Using a broker

2021-08-23 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello listers

We are considering/ starting our search and looking for something newer and
slightly larger than our current 1981 C&C36.

I am sure this has been debated before. Do I need to have a buyers broker(
like real estate) looking our for my interests or is that an unnecessary
expense? I purchased my last 3 boats without one but they were more local.

Thanks

It might depend on what you are planning to spend. Most buyer agents split the
commission on a boat with the selling agent. You might find it hard to get one
involved with a used older boat. We bought our boat through a Pop-Yachts
listing and were provided a buyers agent automatically by Pop-yachts
(remarkable for how little we paid for the boat) but we never met him in
person. He was very helpful but as with anyone working on commission, we had to
really push him to negotiate the price down to where we knew it should be based
on the comps we got. More advice is available for completing a Pop-Yachts
transaction if you like.

The best two things we had going for us were:
1. An independent, 3rd party, broker willing to do free comps and give market
advice for us via email with the understanding we might use him in the future
when we buy a more expensive upgrade. I found this guy by calling a buyers
agent office and learned about the disinterest of buyers agent relationships
for low-cost yachts at the beginning of our search. You might be able to pay
someone a fee for this service if needed but ours offered for free.
2. A surveyor lined up BEFORE we decided on a boat. Ours was exceptionally
helpful and spent hours on the phone with me talking about the various yachts
we looked at during our search (try not to abuse their time, but Tom was a
"talker" and kept me on the phone most times)

Thank you,

The heater is a propane Dickenson 9000 furnace. It is great to take the chill
out on a damp day and can become quite warm own below over the course of an
evening. It's a closed system so draws air down the flu(as opposed from the
cabin) There is a Dickenson 12000 that has a slightly higher BTU which
probably would work better for the 36. Dickenson also manufactures diesel and
solid fuel stoves for those that don't want propane appliances down below.

Here on the Canadian east coast we get alot of damp and cool evenings.

Bruce,

There are a few marine Diesel engine maintenance books out there, and your
engine manual may have enough info on that alone.

To check the tube stack, you’ll need to remove the end caps and slide it out.
Do a check for corrosion and clean. If you see corrosion or holes, replace it
($200-300). Replace the o-rings on the end caps as well.

All the best,

Edd

Subject: Stus-List Bilge leak

I'm at a complete loss for ideas on this and would like to ask the group for
some suggestions.

I have had my C&C 33 mkii for 6 years now. There has always been a small leak
in the bilge, i.e. water is actually seeping in through the forward bilge wall
about half-way down.

The bilge is about 2 feet deep and starts about a foot aft of the mast step.

The PO had a grounding a couple of years before I bought the boat. About 2
years after I bought the boat I brought it to Bristol Marine and had the mast
step reinforced (this was a know problem with 33's) and they also dropped the
keel and then rebedded it.

This work stopped the seeping, but it re-appeared a couple of years ago. I
sanded and applied barrier coat around the keel stub joint and the keel stub.
This seemed to help, but the water ingress would start again about a month or
so after launch.

I, and several others, have inspected under the boat after haul-out and none of
us have seen any sign of moisture, cracks, C&C smile, etc. It looks perfect.

The amount of water is small. Maybe a pint glass every 2-3 weeks.

One boat repair guy suggested that I re-bed all my hatches. I didn't
understand that at all.

I suppose the putty in the keel stub could be compromised. But I still don't
understand how water is getting in there.

Any ideas on the source of water??

I suppose I could just apply some glass to the inside of the bilge, but that
doesn't really solve the problem. Should I drill into the forward end of the
bilge to drain the water and then inject some sort of epoxy mix?

Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Mike

Never tried one but it looks worth having the bit.
I'd rather do this at the dock and use a corded angle drill like
this $150 one from Harbor Freight
https://www.harborfreight.com/13-amp-2-speed-12-in-heavy-duty-right-angle-drill-kit-64121.html

Or rig up an electric winch at the base of the mast with a remote control.

Or hoist a duffelbag full of anchor chain weighing the same weight of the
climber to the mast head and then use that to neutralize the climber's weight
so he can scamper on up at his leisure. Never tried it but read it somewhere.

2021-01-25 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
I don't recommend this either.
 https://photos.app.goo.gl/6W4yvZJBcz3HrQtB9

Yes that's me on another boat. We had to lift 2 boats and the guy that
arranged the crane arranged for a 100 ton crane at about $800 an hour. Lifting
straps got stuck on his mast and they were frigging around too much.

The worst was when the guys below said hold on and adjusted the ladder.
It's s**t like this why women live longer then men.

Stus-List Re: Strong track, lazy jacks, stack pack

2021-01-27 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
I switched my regular sail cover over to a stack pack and lazy jack system
about 5 years ago. I have to say I love it and more importantly the admiral
loves it. It makes dropping the sail and covering super easy. There is no
struggling with sail ties.I especially appreciate it in snotty weather or
when short handed in times when the sail needs to be dropped quickly.

At the time it cost about $100 a foot of boom length through Doyle.

I looked at the tide track but like Chuck find the slugs with a clean and
lubricated sail track works well. We also put mast gates on. These allow
the slugs to be lowered even further.

At the end of the season I disconnect the lines and it slides right off and
into the back of the truck.

It has been one of the better upgrades I have done.

Stus-List Panel rewiring

2021-02-15 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello folks.

As one of my many winter projects I have decided to rewire the 12 volt panel
and add pigtails to make it easier to remove the panels by creating a hinged
panel. I plan to run the pig tails to a terminal block. My question is how to
distribute the positive leads from the leads to the various interior lighting
wires. I have about 4-6 different wires from different areas of the boat.
Would you suggest a terminal block with jumpers or a bus bar?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

North, Doyle and Michelle Stevens lofts still build sails locally in Nova

The big question though is do sails have to self isolate for 14 days if

We are running some numbers here and it is basically a choice between upgrading
and replacing. Coquina is 48 years old now and it is time to do some $$$
upgrades or buy another boat with much of the work done. We found a used C&C 40
that looks gorgeous below, the interior beats most used boats of that era. She
seems in good shape, but the engine is original with 3,000+ hours. An Atomic 4
per the manual should be rebuilt at 3,000 hours if FWC, a raw water cooled
version would be very lucky to get that far in salt water. The Yanmar is FWC. I
frequently hear that diesels can last 10,000 hours, but then again a
significant number of boats from that era are for sale with new engines.
Also re the rod rigging – the mast is out for the winter. With the rigging
easily accessed, what would the cost be of a rigging inspection to assure that
the rod is still good.
Thanks!

I have a 30gal water tank under both settees. The valves for each are set to
open flow. However, the pump seems to draw only from the starboard side. I’d
assumed that with both valves open, the tanks would equalize, but the stbd tank
empties and the pump goes dry, while the port tank remains full. Can someone
venture to what’s going on? I’ve read this 2015
discussion,
but the OP then was interested in disconnecting the two tanks. I’ll do some
exploring tomorrow to see what might be preventing the tanks from equalizing.
Ideas are welcome.

Stus-List Panel rewire

2021-03-31 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hello

You may remember a few months ago I asked some questions about rewiring the
panel. I appreciate the advice at that time. After approx 50 hours I am mostly
done, it's not perfect but vastly improved. I built a harness from the panel
switches to my converted cutting board (it was almost the right size and cost
$7.00 as I didn't want to use plywood) distribution system. All connectors
were replaced, properly crimped and insulated heat shrink to seal the
connectors.

I still have some heat shrink on the main cables (the elec tape is temp while
testing circuits tonight )and a bit of tidying/labeling to do.

Here are some before and almost complete pictures.

To anyone who might be interested, all others delete:

On the Tartan 37 with failed transmissionowner has now replaced with new
Yanmar and transmission...apparently I did not get the correct info from the
owner but I did talk to the mechanic todayit actually wasn't the
transmission. The mechanic says it was a coupling failure and he could not
find a replacement part...Yanmar in the USA said it would take a longtime to
get one manufacturedthe mechanic says he can machine one but how long would
it last he could not guarantee. and again my misunderstandingthe current
second owner put 200 hours on the engine/tranni...they now have 1,900
hoursagain, my misunderstanding.

Nevertheless, the Yanmar 3 cylinder engine and tranni are for sale if anyone is
interestedthe mechanic has them in his garage. I did not discuss me
broadcasting his contact info here on the C&C site but he did say if anyone
wanted to discuss with him for me to provide them with his contact info in Nova
Scotia, Canada.

If anyone wants it, let me know here and I will send to your email.

Someone with a blown engine and good transmission that is the same. So far I
have not seen the model number of the engine or the transmission.
Why did the tranny fail after 200 hours?

On our 36 I use a 35 lb CQR and 25 feet of chain. We are in The North East in
Nova Scotia. It has worked well for years. I am sure the newer anchors may
work better however I have to date not had the anchor drag.

If you have a spare don't bother to go out and buy a new one.

Subject: Stus-List Anchor

Give been told my 22# Danforth anchor with 15 ft of chain is too small for is
too small for my 34 ft C&C in SE Alaska. I have a spare stainless 35 lb CQR
anchor on my trawler in MX. Would this be a better choice? Anyone have
thoughts on the matter.
