Re: [AFMUG] Need some help setting up LibreNMS alerts on core network.

2020-10-21 Thread David Coudron
Hi Sam,

I am not an expert on it, but we have been having pretty good luck with
LibreNMS alerts. We did have some custom alerts set up as well by a
consultant, who did an excellent job. I can provide his contact info if you
are interested. In addition to the normal up/down alerting, we have custom
alerts set up for utilization on Cambium APs, and for utilization on backhaul
links. The backhaul links were particularly challenging as we have to do math
on a number of OIDs to come up with the utilization number, store it, and then
alert on it.

Is there anyone out there that could point me in the right direction to get
alerting set up correctly? I have tried a few times to get AP's to alert me
when they fail, but Libre seems to have some random ways to determine whether a
device is up or down.

Sam,
Most of that is done in the rules for what you want to detect as up or
down ICMP or SNMP
Mine sends me texts and does a weekly report on performance I select to
report on.

Love it :)

2020-10-21 Thread Steven Kenney
Easiest way is to create custom groups and then alert based on those custom
groups. Then further, event within those groups and devices.

Create a group that looks for something with a specific type of OS AND other
recognizable criteria.

For example a very simple one I made for cambium backhauls we have just using
this rule. You can trigger a specific alert based off that group.

devices.hardware = "PTP 450 Slave" OR devices.hardware = "PTP 450 Master" OR
devices.hardware = "PTP 650 Slave" OR devices.hardware = "PTP 650 Master" OR
devices.hardware = "ePTP Slave" OR devices.hardware = "ePTP Master"

2020-10-21 Thread Steven Kenney
Also we like to monitor frame utilization on the cambiums. However since Libre
(and Cambium far as I know) have not supported individual utilization per beam
on the Medusas I take them out.

Here is an alert for that.

wireless_sensors.sensor_descr REGEXP "Downlink" AND
wireless_sensors.sensor_class = "utilization" AND
wireless_sensors.sensor_current > 90 AND devices.sysName NOT LIKE '%medusa%'

This will tell us any AP that has frame utilization over 90% over the course of
a certain period of time before it triggers.

A basic notification if an AP loses sync and has none or is generating its own

sensors.sensor_current = 2 AND sensors.sensor_type =
"WHISP-APS-MIB::whispGPSStats" AND sensors.sensor_prev = 1

Equipment availability is definitely a huge problem right now. Maybe less so
for operators that buy a years worth in advance which I think is how Calix
prefers. Shipping 50 at a time is not their style.

The 15-20k will be integrations with your billing system and API, plus the
setup of the cloud and on boarding for your techs and support people.

If you don’t plan on doing any integrations you can probably negotiate that
number down.

The price is high but it’s high quality set and forget type infrastructure. Our
support calls went way down when we started getting these routers in.

2020-10-21 Thread Ken Hohhof
Awhile back, Streakwave still had some of the Cambium ones in stock but
quantity now shows zero. Just as well because we always threw away the
headphones we just wanted the adapter cable. They were made for
Motorola/Cambium by Best-Tronics and they still have them on their website,
so maybe try there.

https://btpa.com/Cambium-Products/OEM-Replacement-Parts/BT-0674.html

Keep in mind you don't need the adapter cable for 450b SMs.

No, we eat the cost, we also do not charge a setup fee. We retain ownership
of the router and mesh, if they cancel we get them back. Moving to these
routers has been one of the best things we did. It is so easy for my staff to
help with in house wifi issues now, and we never seem to get the my router is
locked up call. Most all the issues are poor signal on firesticks behind the

I assume you don’t send them a mesh unit to put behind the TV. Do you tell
them to put the Firestick on an extender cable? Or to buy an actual FireTV or
maybe something good like a Roku?

I’m getting tired of the Firesticks. Lots of customers have 3-5 devices with
hostnames amazon-xxx which I assume are Firesticks but I guess they could
be other Amazon stuff like Echos. But I’m starting to see 2-3 of them in
houses consuming a constant 5 Mbps each 24x7. I can’t believe that even during
the pandemic, people are watching multiple TVs around the clock, so there must
be some situation where these things are just streaming stuff even if nobody is
watching. They get their power from a separate USB cable so I don’t think they
shut down just because the TV is off. Maybe if you use them with a live TV
streaming service they just stream constantly?

My installers have 6 foot hdmi extender cables and we try that first. That
will usually fix the issue, if not we will look into if they need a 804 mesh
anyways, last resort, probably 20% of the time we convince them to try a Roku
or FireTv. Firesticks and Hulu TV are by far our biggest issues. Hulu just
seems like it has more buffering or lockup app issues than other streaming
apps. YoutubeTV we never have issues along with Netflix.Constant
streaming issue I don’t normally see that often. I do think I have a few
customers though that just constantly have a TV streaming no matter what.

Is this a generational thing: New hire, worked 2 days then no show? Will not
return calls, texts or emails. Has happened repeatedly to us. We also have
guys go through the whole process of getting hired then not ever showing up.

No shows to scheduled interviews is very common.

On a positive note, I am wiring up my new (to me) water jet cutter... Be
making my own HDD drill bits and micro trenching blades soon!--

I hear these stories and then I have to assume unemployment statistics
are wrong.  They must have felt they had a better option.

Years ago I worked for a company that hired a day labor guy who worked out
really well so they offered him a full time job. He turned it down when he
found out he would only get paid every two weeks instead of daily.

2020-10-21 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
I've had a position open here for quite some time. Two interviews set up,
no shows.

I don't doubt the unemployment statistics are correct, (i.e. that's the
percentage collecting unemployment), but a more useful statistic would be
the number of people actually interested in getting and holding an actual
job. I have to assume that number is very close to zero right now, at
least in the local area.

I've had occasion to use several contractors recently related to insulating
the remaining unheated space in our manufacturing facility and it's amazing
how many of them qualify their quotes/info with some "I can't find good
employees and I'm doing the best we can" hedge.

This isn’t something you write - this is a copy of an invoice or

Re: [AFMUG] OT new hires

2020-10-21 Thread Ken Hohhof
That’s probably the best explanation.

Plus I guess a lot of the people out of work are hoping to get called back to
their regular job (after all, we’re “turning the corner”). Plus they may be
able to work a gig job with more flexibility and maybe it pays almost as good
as you’re offering.

If you take a gig job for Uber or delivering groceries or fast food, ghosting
is easy, you just sign out of the app. It used to be you took a job and looked
at it as a 1 or 2 year commitment, or it would look bad on your resume. Now in
the gig economy, it’s a 5 minute commitment.

There’s also probably some depression going around. Lots of 20 year olds see a
dystopian future they blame on older generations and may be curled up in a
fetal position thinking what’s the use.

Of course, you could always try paying more. That won’t work if they really
just don’t want to do the job.

Requalified...might be part of the issue. But getting hired and no show no
call in Texas is a reason to deny benefits. Maybe apart of the reason is
they can't do basic math skills. I have a very few low end positions. I get
some that say they can make more doing gig work. I tell them "You mean you
can gross more. I think you are confused about what you can keep from that
paycheck and the total amount".

I have yet to have one understand the statement.

Re: [AFMUG] OT new hires

2020-10-21 Thread can...@believewireless.net
We had a guy that would teach martial arts after work. He'd make $35/class
and sometimes only have a single
class a night. He'd give up a couple hours of overtime (regular pay
$22/hour) because he was making more
at his other job. He had it stuck in his head $35 > $22 when the reality
was it was $35 vs. $66. I think it took
months for that to sink in.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Yum

2020-10-21 Thread Ken Hohhof
I’ve started making chicken tacos from this, you can heat it up in the pan
directly out of the bag frozen:

https://www.tyson.com/products/grilled-chicken-frozen-breast-pulled/

At first I was making fajitas with it, which is good, but cooking the onions
and bell peppers took time and was too much like work. I’m not a good cook
plus I’m lazy. And if I didn’t open enough windows, the house smelled like
fajitas for a week.

One time I tried poaching chicken breasts and then turning them into pulled
chicken with 2 forks, based on some recipe. Again, too much like work.

For ground beef tacos, I’ve found you can cook up the ground beef, drain off
the fat, put it in a gallon ziplock bag and toss it in the freezer. When it is
just starting to freeze, take it out and massage the bag a little. You end up
with a bag of cooked ground beef that is the consistency of granola. Easy to
cook with, you can take out what you need and put the rest back in the freezer.
I also recently acquired a cheap digital kitchen scale, how I lived all these
years without one I don’t know, I think it was like $20 on Amazon.

Stores sell stuff like meat on the assumption everybody has either 4 or 12
people in their house. If you are cooking for 2, it’s really easy to overeat
or else have more leftovers than you can eat. Ground beef comes in packages of
1.3 pounds or “family packs”. I should make half a package into cheeseburgers
and cook up the rest to freeze for tacos. But my son and I end up eating the
whole package as burgers, and then wonder why we’re gaining weight. I have
come to love the little “slider” buns though. You don’t have to put tiny
burgers on them, they’re fine for quarter pounders. Also good for BBQ beef
sandwiches and fish sandwiches. And nobody will every ask “where’s the beef?”
