I have a set of the Acro chicken ladder sections. I like them but I can’t get
the techs to use them. They are kind of heavy, probably the Goat ladder solves
that, but it ain’t cheap. I think the chicken ladder would be easier to work
from in various sitting and standing positions, as well as to keep tools and
parts from falling off the roof.

Re: [AFMUG] OT new splicing trailer

2020-07-14 Thread chuck
You need 500 lux to splice. Hard to get that with 12 volt lights.
Your splicer and otdr will run down in the middle of a splice and you will want
a generator.
You will have night work and you will need some higher intensity lights outside
to see inside the handhole etc.
Unless you plan to have a vehicle running to power your 12 volt system you will
want a generator.
Sometimes you have to drop the trailer and drive to get someone while someone
stays behind splicing etc etc etc...

Re: [AFMUG] OT new splicing trailer

2020-07-14 Thread Josh Luthman
No idea what it is in lux, but all three of us agree there is more than
enough light. I've got the worst vision and can easily see the strands.

I should probably specify...we have an inverter for 110vac coming off that
battery. Works for phones, splicer, otdr, etc. Battery charges off the
truck with the extra pin on the trailer hook up. Take off the trailer
plug and drop the trailer and the truck can go freely. Limited to a
handful of hours off the battery.

All the work is in town right now so there are street lights, but we have a
Dewalt battery powered light stand that does very well (mostly used for
tenting).

I pushed for a generator but the guy doing the work said to take it back

Re: [AFMUG] OT new splicing trailer

2020-07-14 Thread chuck
Aqua vs Blue, Pink vs red. Some are hard to see. But even if you can see
them, after many hours eye strain sets in if the light level is too low.

Lux meters are super cheap.
https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Luxmeter-Illuminance-Display-0-1-50/dp/B00992B29I

You can estimate based on lumens and the pattern given off by the light.
Lux = Lumens per square meter. Just take the total lumens and divide that by
the area of the floor, counter and walls and you will have a rough guess at
lux.

Normal office work, PC work, study library, groceries, show rooms,
laboratories, check-out areas, kitchens, auditoriums 500
Supermarkets, mechanical workshops, office landscapes 750
Normal drawing work, detailed mechanical workshops, operation theaters
1000
Detailed drawing work, very detailed mechanical works, electronic
workshops, testing and adjustments 1500 - 2000
Performance of visual tasks of low contrast and very small size for
prolonged periods of time 2000 - 5000
Performance of very prolonged and exacting visual tasks 5000 - 1
Performance of very special visual tasks of extremely low contrast and
small size 1 - 2

We have used the chicken ladder as well. They are heavy; that is

Re: [AFMUG] OT new splicing trailer

2020-07-14 Thread Robert
a couple of those 100ah lithium iron PO batteries and a couple of 300
watt panels and I would think that you would be good to go for
everything but a big A/C unit.   I would use the tripod milwaukee led
lights for outside lighting with a recharge station inside hooked up to
power from the vehicle.   You can get some very bright led lights with
less than 50 watt draw.   But of course two of those batteries is more
expensive than a generator, just a lot quieter and less maintenance.

You need 500 lux to splice.  Hard to get that with 12 volt lights.
Your splicer and otdr will run down in the middle of a splice and you
will want a generator.
You will have night work and you will need some higher intensity
lights outside to see inside the handhole etc.
Unless you plan to have a vehicle running to power your 12 volt system
you will want a generator.
Sometimes you have to drop the trailer and drive to get someone while
someone stays behind splicing etc etc etc...

I would think that a 1000 watt load would pretty much kill a 12V
inverter (~~ 83 amps), and would also be significant for a 24V
inverter (~~ 42 amps).  It's not until you get into bigger
voltages that the power cables start to look reasonable.

Neat project. Have you considered making it double walled with some
sort of anti-vibration material or suspension between the inner and outer
 layers?

Re: [AFMUG] OT new splicing trailer

2020-07-14 Thread Ken Hohhof
I bought my last Honda generator from Home Depot because ship to store is so
easy. But there was a recall on it, and of course Home Depot doesn’t service
them, so I took it to a nearby tool place that sells primarily to contractors,
and they did the recall in about an hour while I waited.

So now I go there, even if the price is a little higher.

Tried Lowes first. All of the other generators we have are from there.

Went to Harbor Freight second - because I'm pretty sure they just steal their
designs from Honda.

Nope. Bought it and it's just sitting in the office getting dusty.

Neither Harbor Freight nor Lowes models worked for the 110 lights - they would
blink. Extra generators, I guess...

I should probably specify...we have an inverter for 110vac coming off that
battery. Works for phones, splicer, otdr, etc. Battery charges off the truck
with the extra pin on the trailer hook up. Take off the trailer plug and drop
the trailer and the truck can go freely. Limited to a handful of hours off the
battery.

All the work is in town right now so there are street lights, but we have a
Dewalt battery powered light stand that does very well (mostly used for
tenting).

I pushed for a generator but the guy doing the work said to take it back *shrug*

I pushed for a generator. The techs resisted and ultimately we ended up
without a generator.

The lights were easier on 12vdc. Propane works so well for heat. AC is at a
loss.

Why do you say we'll eventually want a generator?

Doing 12vdc in ours.

We use propane for heat and haven't really figured out the air conditioning.
The whole side opens up like a food truck, though. Ohio treats us OK.

Not going to lie, if I had tear ducts, I would maybe have had some gay

solutions, and getting there, wiped out by some wind. I'll find a solution,
it's what idiots like us do, but all that work wiped off the map kind of
sucks.. wife was pissed and made me come home cause of some shit 2 years
