It's actually indeterminate until you read the label.
The limits for "bear spray" are lower. The content is set by law

The limits for "pepper spray" are wider. Depending on
usage/brand/whatever it can range between 0.18% and 3%. (pepper spray)
So pepper spray can theoretically be more potent and less potent

When Hally's came around in 1986, it was considered a "poor

Years ago I started a wisp that grew to over 6000 subs.

Part way through I decided to send out a letter to all the subs on the lowest
tier. (The majority of them were on the lowest tier.)
I said something like: Dear customer, we have decided to eliminate our economy
plan. We have few customers on that plan and we have decided to streamline our
rates.

I calculated that if we lost more than 200 customers by forcing them to change
to a higher plan, it would have been a mistake to do this. We lost about 40.
And some of them came back.

When Hally's came around in 1986, it was considered a "poor showing". It's
not clear to me if this is because it is diminishing in general, or whether it
just had bad geometry that time around. None of us will probably be alive to
see it next time.

Hale-Bopp was great, we enjoyed watching it for at least a month or so.

Best one I think I have ever seen. Halley's was no big deal. Hale-Bopp was
not great but was about the same as the current one.

Kohoutek was the first I saw but I had to use field glasses.

Agreed. Almost none of our customers complain of speed.

Sure there is the occasional customer that doesn’t sign up or leaves for the
cable company because “I can get three times as much speed for the same price”.

They don’t realize they aren’t even coming close to using it.

The majority of our customers average 2-5 megabits during prime time.

Yeah, don’t do the cartoon eyes popping out to an aooga sound.

You’ll need to watch a week’s worth of weather girls before the surgery.

Will it be an outpatient surgery center and recover at home? Probably not the
best time for an extended stay in a hospital.

Can we make jokes about 2020 vision, given that it’s 2020?

We do get people complaining about speed, but it’s people on the bottom 2
plans. That’s why I say it’s a $$$ problem.

And of course everything gets blamed on speed, when often it’s a WiFi or device
issue. Complaints like “my Internet is slow, if more than one of us is on our
phone, we get kicked off”, or “I can’t print to my wireless printer”.

[AFMUG] tomorrow

2020-07-12 Thread chuck
Excellent job on the intersection guys. Y’all just keep getting better at what
you do.

This week Centracom said they are coming to splice and perhaps install
equipment in the C.O.
BTW, C.O. stands for Central Office. Many years ago it was CDO for Central
Distribution Office. This is where the telephone operators used to manually
switch telephone calls with “cord boards”. Later automatic switching equipment
took over that job but the C.O. has remained. Internet companies frequently
call their main tech office the NOC Network Operations Center. NOC is probably
taking over for C.O. but I am an older dude and will continue to refer to the
C.O. Ours is so small it would more properly be called a Carrier Hut or
Remote. But I digress.

We want everything looking as nice as we can for our upstream provider’s visit.

Inside the C.O. we need the following done:
Racks straightened
Batteries reversed
Walls and ceiling washed
Stairs installed
Unused wires and equipment removed
Wires straightened up and dressed better
Perhaps run the 120 VAC to the inverter input

Outside the C.O. we need the following:
Back wall painted where the ducts are.
Box that was over that area removed from the field to the North and either
saved for repurpose or put in the scrap metal dumpster.
All weeds removed from the fenced area.
Gravel covering 100% of that area.

Outside the fenced area we need the following:
Put all the pieces of that motorhome in the dump trailer. Any other garbage
too and take it to the dump.
Move that motorhome chassis somewhere it is not obvious.
Clean up, straight up etc the lot. Make sure all the trucks and such are
parked in a nice orderly fashion.
Knock down any weeds and lay down weed killer in those spots.

Need to make sure not to leave the HVAC on in there until we get equipment
actually needing to be powered.
Even then, we will want to set it no lower than 90 degrees. Just got 15 days
worth of power bill (someone had left the AC on down to about 65 degrees) and
the bill was $100. With no revenue producing customers yet, I don’t want
recurring expenses. --

A. Yes. It’s a $$ issue.

Don’t want to pay.

That being said we have very few folks who complain. We try to balance speed
for average household with a $$ amount the average household can afford.

I used a Cradlepoint point antenna until we run cable for outdoor antenna.
This unit is pricey . $900 vs..$500 for a Cradlepoint but it comes with
built-in configuration and cloud server that has a powerful app for phones
and PCs. The AerMod folks asked us to deploy this model.
We also have a Cradlepoint IBR-600 at the RO plant for Tonka Water Systems
to access their PLCs and equipment. Both of these installations are not
on Fabens Water SCADA network.

Agreed. Almost none of our customers complain of speed.

Sure there is the occasional customer that doesn’t sign up or leaves
for the cable company because “I can get three times as much speed
for the same price”.

They don’t realize they aren’t even coming close to using it.

The majority of our customers average 2-5 megabits during prime time.

I know that at some point in the past that anything beyond 15.0.2 was
known to have fairly common DFS issues by some customers.   I thought
this was resolved in later releases, but I also don't see any mention
of said issue being resolved in any release notes post 15.0.02.

I was wondering if anyone knew the current status?  I.E. if they had

Or have tried recent releases and discovered the problem still exists,

Re: [AFMUG] tomorrow

2020-07-12 Thread chuck
Rack mount batteries got installed with the wires coming off the front then up
the rack with wire hangers for a bit then diagonally going to the rack and then
up the back Looks bad. I don’t know why the guy did not route them looking
better. So if we flip them around in the rack, the wires can go straight up
the back side of the rack to the circuit breaker panel and the inverter and
rectifier shelves.

The all aluminum building has the door threshold about 4 feet above ground
level. It was designed to resist flooding. And the place where it rests was
underwater in the mid 1980s. So, now the water would have to be over the top
of I-80 before I have a problem. And since it has a 4 foot sump, we can pump
it out (it has a built in sump pump too). But it needs stairs to get into. I
got some nice gnarly steel stair treat and built a set of stairs for it. They
need to be painted and put in place.

The inverter has a switch that will convert the output over to commercial power
if it fails. It has no 120 VAC feed into it at the moment. Nice Exeltech 4 kW
sine wave modular inverter.

A few years ago a guy wanted to rent some of our back lot to stage his tow
trucks. He parked several tow trucks and an older Winnebago style motor home
there. About a month or less some other guy showed up and said this guy
supposedly bought those trucks from him as well as the whole business but
defaulted. Those were his trucks. I told him that I would not notice if they
all disappeared as I could not get ahold of the guy and he only made the one
rent payment.

I finally made contact and told him to clear out the remaining truck and the
motor home. He never got the motorhome. I should have towed it out to the
highway and just left it. But instead I tried to sell it, give it away get the
local junkyard to take it. I eventually told the crew to go out with a mini
excavator (with a thumb) and pluck it to pieces and put all the pieces in a
large truck sized dumpster. I finished ripping all the pieces they left off
today and made a mess. Not sure what I am going to do with the chassis. It
was running when it was parked.

Kinda fun starting up another company brand new like this. We are installing a
576 strand C.O. cable this week. My C.O. rack can serve up to 10,024 customers
without adding another shelf. 576 strands can serve 18,432 customers. No
remotes, electronics, DLCs etc out in the field. Just 100% optics up to 20 km
and up to 30 km if we cut down the splitter ports.

The upstream equipment we are installing has the ability to go to 1000 Gbps on
a ring of just 4 strands. Thus the name Terabit Networks. The ring will be
about 100 miles long when I complete it. I have 2 gaps left to complete.

If the rack mount batteries are front terminal, you can’t blame someone for
installing them with the wires coming off the front. In a European CO the
racks are back-to-back and you have no choice, everything must be installed and
serviced from the front.

Re: [AFMUG] 450i/450m DFS false detect problem solved in later firmware?

2020-07-12 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
I read the 16.0.1 release notes, nothing really specific about DFS other
than it being on when it shouldn't be. However, I agree there is lots of
stuff fixed in there, some of which could have repercussions for DFS.

Are you saying that mid to late 15.x was generally broken for DFS and this
is largely fixed in 16.x? I guess my real question should have been 'What
is the state of DFS in the 450 platform and how fussy is it'?

I'm still gathering information from this customer but it sounds like
they're still trying to track down the root cause. Sometime in the past
week or so they figured out that there was some correlation between the DFS
events adding a fair bit of PacketFlux gear, so this correlation is now the
leading root cause in their minds. So now I get to try to resolve their
problem for them.

I like to use #6 welding cable for the
big batteries and it is so flexible you often don’t need
to fasten it down, it just nicely routes itself.

Without seeing the installation, my first inclination
would be to have the terminals in front, and find a way to
dress the cables to look more presentable and/or be more
serviceable. Since I can't see what it looks like, I will
  say "Carry on."

front.

Rack mount
batteries got installed with the wires coming
off the front then up the rack with wire hangers
for a bit then diagonally going to the rack and
then up the back   Looks bad.  I don’t know why
the guy did not route them looking better.  So
if we flip them around in the rack, the wires
can go straight up the back side of the rack to
the circuit breaker panel and the inverter and
rectifier shelves.

The all
aluminum building has the door threshold about 4
feet above ground level.  It was designed to
resist flooding.  And the place where it rests
was underwater in the mid 1980s.  So, now the
water would have to be over the top of I-80
before I have a problem.  And since it has a 4
foot sump, we can pump it out (it has a built in
sump pump too).   But it needs stairs to get
into.  I got some nice gnarly steel stair treat
and built a set of stairs for it.  They need to
be painted and put in place.

The
inverter has a switch that will convert the
output over to commercial power if it fails.  It
has no 120 VAC feed into it at the moment.  Nice
Exeltech 4 kW sine wave modular inverter.

A few years
ago a guy wanted to rent some of our back lot to
stage his tow trucks.  He parked several tow
trucks and an older Winnebago style motor home
there.  About a month or less some other guy
showed up and said this guy supposedly bought
those trucks from him as well as the whole
business but defaulted.  Those were his trucks.
I told him that I would not notice if they all
disappeared as I could not get ahold of the guy
and he only made the one rent payment.

Re: [AFMUG] 450i/450m DFS false detect problem solved in later firmware?

2020-07-12 Thread Ken Hohhof
I am unaware of any correlation between DFS events and either Packetflux or
15.x FW.

I don’t use a lot of DFS because honestly it seems fussy no matter what. But I
have a tower with 10 sectors in 5 GHz (8 x 450i and 2 x 450m). They are all
synced from a Packetflux Rackinjector using Cambium Sync. 4 of the 450i
sectors are in 5.4 DFS, and I’m embarrassed to find they are still on 15.2 FW.
Uptime of about 6 months and no DFS events. So I’m dubious about all of this.

The latest production FW is 16.2.1 and it also has a lot of fixes so I’m not
sure why you would be running something so far behind. As I said, I’m
embarrassed to find I still have radios on 15.2.

Has he opened a case with Cambium support? There are some best practices with
DFS. For sure you don’t want to configure the AP to think the antenna gain is
lower than it is (not possible with 450m or integrated 450i). You don’t want
to set the SM Receive Target Level higher than necessary on other sectors.
Then there’s choosing the alternate frequencies. And I suppose a poor sync
configuration could cause false DFS detections, where an AP sees the signal
from an adjacent AP.

But who knows what causes these events? Somebody’s Linksys reflected off a
bird? A competitor aiming a new radio? I used to have a 5.4 GHz PTP500
backhaul and the end pointed in the general direction of Chicago would have DFS
events when there were storms. I thought ducting was causing it to see distant
signals, but it could also have been tripped by lightning. DFS is fussy. I
don’t like it. If I could swap out all the SMs on those DFS sectors for 450b,
I would probably move them to U-NII-1.

I read the 16.0.1 release notes, nothing really specific about DFS other than
it being on when it shouldn't be. However, I agree there is lots of stuff
fixed in there, some of which could have repercussions for DFS.

Are you saying that mid to late 15.x was generally broken for DFS and this is
largely fixed in 16.x? I guess my real question should have been 'What is the
state of DFS in the 450 platform and how fussy is it'?

I'm still gathering information from this customer but it sounds like they're
still trying to track down the root cause. Sometime in the past week or so
they figured out that there was some correlation between the DFS events adding
a fair bit of PacketFlux gear, so this correlation is now the leading root
cause in their minds. So now I get to try to resolve their problem for them.

Lots of things corrected in 15.2 and later for EIRP and SNR related
calculations the help with H/V misreads and A/B channel alignments.

Read the release notes in 16.0.1 for further info.

I'm working with a customer that is having problems with DFS false hits who is

I know that at some point in the past that anything beyond 15.0.2 was known to
have fairly common DFS issues by some customers. I thought this was resolved
in later releases, but I also don't see any mention of said issue being
resolved in any release notes post 15.0.02.

I was wondering if anyone knew the current status? I.E. if they had been
seeing the problem previously, and then discovered it was fixed. Or have tried
recent releases and discovered the problem still exists, etc...
