Create a batch file that does the following: del C:\SystemStateBackup\SystemState.bkf ntbackup backup systemstate /F "C:\SystemStateBackup\SystemState.bkf" This will backup the system objects using Windows' ntbackup utility. If you need to restore the entire box, restore systemstate.bkf after the TSM file restore, and you get all of your system objects back. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Berbee Information Networks Office 262.521.5627

TDP Lotus Domino Backup/Restore Procedure
Hello again everyone! Since I only do the administrative portion of tsm I am not familiar with the TDP for Lotus Domino that we have for our Lotus Notes servers. We are currently running TSM 5.1.6.2 on os/390 and the lotus notes servers are TDP Domino AIX version 4.2. I was wondering what the standard include/exclude list is for such servers and what is the normal procedure for restoring the server? We recently had a problem where the NFS and txn files were excluded from the TSM backups, but in order to bring up the TDP you need these files? If anyone has a good explanation of their process and how TDP works I would appreciate it! Thank you! Joni Moyer Systems Programmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] (717)975-8338
Re: IE 6.1 and command line
What version of Mozilla are you using? Although I'm pretty sure the my admin client has been working since at least 1.2, I'm runnning the client just fine on Mozilla 1.4b. What symptoms do you have? My server is on AIX, tho, so maybe that's the difference. Mark Bertrand wrote: I would love to use Mozilla, use it at home, mush less popups. The problem is I can't seem to get the TSM Admin GUI to work, even after installing the Java plugin. I know command line is the preferred admin way, but I'm relatively new to TSM, about 1.5 years and I taught myself through GUI, so I am really attached to it. TSM documentation only states it will work with IE or Netscape, so I guess supports out. My server is W2K, so I guess I am stuck with IE. Client backups in MediaW state
We often run into this situation: Client backups normally go to the disk storage pool, but if it fills up, they start going directly to tape. We have many more clients than tape drives, so we eventually have a number of clients in MediaW state. Eventually, migration frees up a good portion of the disk storage pool, but we don't see the clients in MediaW state becoming aware of this. Instead, they just sit in MediaW state waiting in line for a tape to become available. Is there a sure-fire way to cause all the client sessions (or a given client session) in MediaW state to immediately revert to using the disk storage pool again? If the answer is no, is there a way to raise the priority of a given client session in MediaW state so that it gets the next tape that becomes available? Bob Brazner Johnson Controls, Inc. Re: TDP Lotus Domino Backup/Restore Procedure
Joni, FYI... Data Protection for Lotus Domino requires at least Domino 5. It does not support Domino 4. (Domino 4 did not have the backup/restore APIs for doing database level online backup/restore.) Once you get to Domino 5, Data Protection for Lotus Domino will handle the online backup of the Domino databases and templates. So, you can exclude those in the options file that handles the file-level backup. But, you do NOT exclude those in the options file for Data Protection for Lotus Domino. I recommend looking over the "Backup strategy considerations" in the User's Guide and also looking at the Redbook, "Backing Up Lotus Domino R5 Using Tivoli Storage Management. Pub number: SG24-5247-00 You can find that at: www.redbooks.ibm.com Thanks, Del > Since I only do the administrative portion of tsm I am not familiar with > the TDP for Lotus Domino that we have for our Lotus Notes servers. TDP Domino and database security (ACL)
Under what userid/permission does the TDP Domino agent use to backup the databases? I was just working with a Domino admin to restore her mailbox which does not allow the administrator to open it without prompting for password. I was able to backup her mailbox and restore it to a different location. When I open the restored mailbox we were not prompted for password. She is a little concerned about using Tivoli and permissions. Bill Boyer "Some days you are the bug, some days you are the windshield." - ??
Start /B switch for TDP Domino
Why do the sample scripts for TDP Domino use "start /B" to run the agent? Doesn't this then NOT wait for the backup to complete before the script completes? This way I don't get a true schedule completion on the event. Bill Boyer "Some days you are the bug, some days you are the windshield." - ??
Re: Tape reclaim & stgpool migration question/
You may have a little confusion about Reclamation and Migration. Do 'q stg xxxpool f=d' and find 'Reclamation Threshold' which governs how reclamation will be done. Highmig=xx and lowmig=xx are parameters that works only for Migration of data from one pool to another. When a stg reaches highmig #, it kicks migration until reaches lowmig#. Hope this helps. Reclamation % is set to 50 on tapepool.Reclamation Threshold: 50 Migration set as High Mig Pct: 80 on SQUEnTIal ACCESS Stgpool disk with devclass cfile. Low Mig Pct: 0 Migration takes place but after certain retries . What I see is after dsik stgpool reach 95% it retries with No more space in stgpool of disk pool to which tapes are getting reclaimed. NAS Agent
Is an agent required to backup Network Attached Storage, or does it just require a Client license? I found SAN Agents, but nothing on NAS. And does anyone remember when you could go the IBM storage page, Click on "Get the Code" And go to a grid that listed all the Server code, client code and agents by platform, complete with shortcuts to the downloads and manuals? Was this too easy? Is that why it's not there anymore? Are we being tested? Is that why it's not there anymore? Are we being tested? Sure, do, Doug! Those were the good old days. My sense is, from feedback from the web team, that ease of use was sacrificed to achieve a goal of strict corporate organization and corporation-wide web standards. I also remember when it was possible to send feedback to the Publications people to help improve the manuals: they enjoyed rapport with the customers. Since early spring, however, a veritable Berlin Wall has been erected, with customers left with nothing but a generic web feedback page with a data entry area little bigger than a postage stamp, and no response to submissions through even that. I'm afraid we're in another era of corporate IBM deeming customer relations not worth bothering with. Thankfully for us, we have "rebels" like Andy and Del carrying on the right tradition of helpfulness. Richard Sims, BU
Schedule for the last day of the month...every month
I have a client that wants to do monthly backups on the last day of the month. A co-worker did some testing and creating a schedule for say 5/31/3002 with PERU=MONTH. The June event gets scheduled for 6/30, but then remains the 30th day from then on. Until Feb next year when it moves to the 29th. Outside of creating a schedule for each month with a PERU=YEAR, is there a way to do a schedule on the last day of every month?? Re: Schedule for the last day of the month...every month
If you are doing it inside TSM I can give you an approach. I am not good with SQL so you or someone on this list could help. You could run a schedule everyday and have a select statement in it like the following: select 1 from whatever where month(current date) = month(current date + 1 day) if(rc_ok) goto stop do your stuff for the last day of the month exit stop: do stuff here for other days exit Hope that helps -- Phillip Ford Senior Software Specialist Corporate Computer Center Schering-Plough Corp. Problems with empty files restored
In a client`s file system /t in the subdirectoy /tuxedo/bialogs/stdout there are 3 files that were created erroneously. TSM backed up that file system and, obviously, those files. When I try to restore that subdirectory, all the files are restored empty, I mean "0 Kb". All the info in tsm`s databases looks correctly backed up. The problem is that I need to restore that info! Do you think those files with invalid names are corrupting the tsm databases? How could I erase those files from the databases?...to eliminate the possibility! Re: Schedule for the last day of the month...every month
You might be able to develop & schedule a little script which a) does a 'delete schedule' b) goes through a loop that performs a 'define schedule' for the 31st/30th/29th/28th (in that order) c) after each 'define schedule' attempt, checks the Return Code (or output of 'q sched') d) exit if/when the 'define schedule' is successful. Then schedule the script to run on any of the 1st through 28th day of the month. How many clients? I have about 2400, 2200 active. 2. How much stored? I have about 65 Tb on line. (Sorry Paul, I made any arithmetic error.) 3. How many servers, and what type? I have 2 AIX SP2 nodes, both in need of upgrade. 4. How many tape drives? I have 8 shared in a 3494 library. 5. Do you have a centralized organization? With how many domains? We have a central organization with many branches, many independent IT departments, and a number of autonomous operations. I have more than 30 domains, each with an independent admin with "policy" privileges. 6. If you are not a central organization, do you have a recommended retention policy? I have recommended 5/2/30/60, some prefer 4/1, some others. 7. Do you allow archiving? for longterm? We now restrict on a grandfathered basis, but it's a major headache. 8. Do you backup desktops? data only? We backup desktops, laptops, labtops, servers, etc. Attempts to restrict desktops to backup data only have met with limited success. 9. Do you charge? We've talked about, and plan to do it, maybe after we've finished our discussions. If you can think of anything I've overlooked, add it. TIA
tsm logic volume snap shot agent question
I am running tsm server version 5.1.6.3 on w2k. When I bring up the client gui on the tsm server and go to the setup wizards I see an options for TSM logic volume snapshot agent setup. Does anyone have any information on this or can someone point me to some documentation. I didn't see it in the administrator manul. channel bonding
We are installing a new TSM server. During setup, we recently determined that with the hardware we have, we have to move our platform for TSM 5.1 from RedHat Linux 7.2 to Windows 2K Server. One of the downfalls I see in that is that Linux supports channel bonding, but Windows doesn't. Is this true? Has anyone got channel bonding to work in 2K server? I assume most TSM'ers would want bonding, because it speeds up the transfer of client data to your TSM spool disks, thus you can shorten the nightly backup window. I've looked at bit at groups google, and I see people who say it can't be done, and others that say you need NIC's that have channel bonding support built into it, but I can't find any NIC that seems to have that. I'm using the Intel Pro/1000 MT Sever Adapter. So I guess my questions is: does anyone here run TSM on 2K Server and get channel bonding? Or are people having with a single NIC Thanks! Or are people >>having with a single NIC I am not familiar with the term "channel bonding", but I am assuming you are refering to Ether-Channeling. This is also sometimes called Link-Aggregation (though really they are two different things). If so, yes it is possible on Windows 2000. This functionality is more of a function of the hardware/driver support than it is OS support. You must also have switches which support it, but if you had it running previously, then obviously they do. All of the Intel Pro 1000 series supports Ether-channeling/Link Aggregation, and AFAIK you can even mix and match the different models (we do). While I do not use it with TSM, we have several severs which use Ether-channeling. Consult the documentation/readme from Intel for guidance setting it up. It's very simple on Wintel boxes, and ensure you have the newest driver revs available! Re: Schedule for the last day of the month...every month
We've just decided to get rid of the whole TSM scheduler for the most part and go with an external schedular for TSM backups (AutoSys). It fixes the whole "last day of the month, or quarter or whatever" problem easily. It also lets us quit using the TSM scheduler on our clients. This may not be the right answer for you, but it looks like it's going to work fine for us. curtis stewart Kent Monthei wrote: You might be able to develop & schedule a little script which a) does a 'delete schedule' b) goes through a loop that performs a 'define schedule' for the 31st/30th/29th/28th (in that order) c) after each 'define schedule' attempt, checks the Return Code (or output of 'q sched') d) exit if/when the 'define schedule' is successful. Fresh install of TDP for Domino crashed on Win2K
All, I've installed the latest TDP for Domino client on one of our W2K Notes boxes. I can't run the GUI at all. It crashes on startup. I can however run domdsmc but domdsmc also crashes. But it only seems to crash when attempting to access the Domino server. I've managed to register the client to the TSM server and I can change the tsm password and I can set settings (eg: ini path). But if I do anything involving the domino server eg: domdsmc q domino, it crashes. A dump of the crash and the .rip file follow. Any ideas? FIXED: Fresh install of TDP for Domino crashed on Win2K
All, Turns out the problem was that I was accessing the W2K server using a terminal services client. I switched to a remote control of the console and everything went OK. Strange huh?
