Joel;
A few months back, I posted here on the Wrenches List seeking specific
code references regarding this, and of course the NEC hounds were
released. It all started with one of those solar shade companies wanting
us to carry their product line..... and I jumped their ass big time on
"dedicated branch circuit" for sources...Real cordial for a while, they
were "seeking to learn more information"....then all of a sudden, I
heard nothing back.
It's a big enough problem that thousands of these non-UL listed grid
tie inverters that "plug into your wall outlet" are being sold on Ebay
and installed , but having US companies build product lines around these
things is far worse. But that's how the law goes -- they might be
illegal to install, but they are legal to buy and sell.
Apparently my rant to them had no effect, even the part about how
insurance companies would deny claims if such equipment were found. I
guess maybe so far it has all burned up in the house fire, with nobody
the wiser.
Well, I tried to do my part. In that...."your product line is both
illegal and dangerous. Cease and desist, or you will get sued."
I would be happy to forward all my correspondence with these idiots to
any AHJ that is interested in busting them.

Wrenches,
We've seen solar shutters displayed recently at two trade shows in the
Los Angeles area. See http://plugnsaveenergyproducts.com/shutters/ The
solar shutters use zip cord and the people at the shows were telling
people to just plug the inverter into a wall outlet. I told them that
they were violating the NEC and endangering people. They replied
that ETL is testing their product and said it will get listed and be
put on the CEC eligible module list. We asked how much power a
solar shutter produces when mounted inside a window and getting light
through the window and frame and if one shutter slat shades cells on
the slat below it. They replied that their solar shutter works
and seem to sincerely believe in their product.
