What I've done for years when initially fixing the long end of a cable (range of motion limit screws roughly adjusted to hand manipulation of derailleur before chain put on and barrel adjuster all the way in then backed out one turn) is to feed it through the housing and ferrules, making sure all are seated nicely to each other (just fitting them snugly) and when I am pulling it to the cable clamp, instead of pliers or third hand tooling it to get more tension I deflect the derailleur against its spring action with my hand when I tighten the cable clamp. The derailleur spring pulls any overt slack and then I give the shifter a push through a gear or two's range of motion and let it sit for a bit to really seat the ferrules on housings, and both into the stops. No funny kinks or smashed placeson the remaining cable.
