Hi Michael, the derailer cables don't need to be super tight to begin with. In the first position, just pull it hand tight. I mean pull it pretty taught, but you don't need to worry about it. They shouldn't be sagging at all, but don't need any more than that. I know that's pretty vague, but can't think of a better way to explain it without showing you IRL :-)
