It's just that I am really used to the lack of clutter on a fixed and really, really hate futzing with derailleur ajdustments, cleaning and maintenance. But a 2X9 might be OK if I use friction.
Anyone? +1 for "lack of clutter" I will say that with modern (post '90...um... _1990_) quality derailleurs, there really isn't that much adjusting. It's typically the shifters which have been the weak spot, and arguably, those have gotten better (and would be even better if they didn't try to cram another gear into the mix every couple years). If you have good shifters and quality derailleurs, and you are having to adjust frequently, there are other variables probably causing the issues. Housing, cables, slack somewhere in the system, bent/misaligned derailleur hanger, loose cogs on a cassette all create gremlins in the mechanism. Ratcheting, stopless (friction) shifters eliminate 99% of those (maybe 97%...) issues. My wife has a Nexus 8 on her bike, and I like riding it. I'm still clumsy when it comes to tire changes and wheel removal, but for easy errands and in-town riding, it works. I wouldn't swap it for my derailleur, though. Certainly not for a cross race, long mixed-terrain ride or brevet. I like the bits on the outside when it's just me and a wrench, trying to figure out why things aren't working right. - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes The Gallery needs your photos!
