I use 46/30 on the bikes I ride the most and it's the bees knees!
Two cranks with 50.4 bcd and one 94 bcd, with
12-28 8sp cassettes.
I use the entire range and have never wished for a lower gear (at  
least on the road) and only rarely wish for higher.
