Can someone please describe shimmy to me? I would think it is an uncontrolable vibration you get similar to a car wiht the front end out of alignment or the wheel is out of balance. I have an Atlantis, Quickbeam and Rambouillet and have never experienced shimmy on them. On the Rambouillet I have taken to using the largest Berthoud handle bar bag they make and it sits on a berthoud rack. Never had anything I would call shimmy. I do experience wheel flop at low speeds. I have thought about getting a low trail fork but would the bike still be a Rambouillet? Would I be able to get the same gorgeous Orange color? The bottom line is a Rambouillet with a custome low trail fork is still cheaper then a full custom frame so if this will increase someone's riding pleasure why not? I am still on the fence about what to do about the Rambouillet. I am now a confirmed believer in Handlebar bags and low trail is the way to go. Without a front load the Rambo is one of the nicest bikes I have ever ridden. This is really only an issue on long slow climbs so probably I will live with it. Although a Weigle would be nice. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [RBW] Re: Low trail Atlantis forkDate: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 20:32:18 -0700 I have to believe that shimmy has a strong component of Human Body in it. My good friend and 35 year cyclist, twice trans-America rider, and former wrench has had many bikes over the years and has had shimmy on every one of them. Given the variety of his bikes, geometries, materials, etc. that his particular build is the only common factor and, therefore, evidence of at least one cause outside the realm of design. I'd be willing to bet that every bike ever designed has shimmied under a rider at some point. Does that mean every design is flawed? No, of course not. I, OTOH, have never had a bike shimmy, nor have I witnessed it, in my 35 years of semi-serious cycling. Ultimately, shimmy caused by poor frame design is probably the most intuitive rationale, but rarely the true and total cause. ----- Original Message ----- From: CycloFiend To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 8:01 PM Subject: [RBW] Re: Low trail Atlantis fork on 9/16/08 5:04 PM, EricP at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:> In the interest of fairness - I recently posted on a different list> about shimmy. And what do I know?Hey there Eric - My comments weren't to dismiss the occurence of shimmy when it occurs - Ihope it didn't come across that way.I've seen it, heard stories, seen abrasions and damage from folks whopanicked, locked up and lost it, but been lucky to have it happen only onetime to me directly.I honestly think that shimmy is one of the least well understood conditionswhich can occur on a bike. There is a lot of conjecture on the subject, butlittle study.
