Owen, I have done a few Raspbian Jessie-Lite installs on rpi 2B and 3B
following these instructions

http://raspberry.gerrelt.nl/

A few mistakes and false starts along the way, but now I can do one in
around 1hr, or less (most of this time is burning the image, updating
the software on the pi and configuring the LMS, so can be split into
stages).

Mounting the Nas or external hard drive is a little more complicated but
there are plenty of guides ont' net.

You should try it, spare a little time at a weekend, it's good fun.

The piCorePlayer runs in ram so can just be switched off, the max2play
has a web gui which includes a power off section and with the Raspbian,
one has to send a simple ssh message via either a computer, tablet or
smart phone.

Ronnie.
