Anthony

thank you for your reply below:

Re TOS - Forgive my ignorance but what does that stand for? Tiscali Operating
Software? Does it refer to the Tiscal Broadband installation software, if so,
then yes I have agreed to their contract of service

Re Router - I confess I have never used a Router before, so I don't know how
easy they are to set-up. Will I have to manualy configure my internet set-up re
Tiscali SMTP and POP details etc? I will purchase a corded router, as I do not
trust wireless routers with regard to signal interception. Least I know all
routers are Linux compatabe, thank you.

Re your Intel Hardware advice, thank you for that I shall now sort an Intel PC
instead of AMD. I am not worried about 3D graphics at this point

Re incompatible software - From my past experience the worst ofenders are
antivirus guards used in windows and many IM's (however I don't use IM's). Does
AVAST (AVG) run OK on Linux and which is the best Firewall to use? I know Linux
is much safer than Windows but I would still prefer to work behind a firewall
and have an AGV.

  Point 1.

No problem since ISPs usually allow a few computers to connect, you have to
register each one and they usually permit three.

As an aside, the problem you state, was caused by the ISP requiring agreeing
to a TOS, electronically supplied and bundled in to the software. I would
assume (not qualified in law, ) you have a legal basis to ask for the TOS
contract in written form. Luckily you won't have this problem since you
already have agreed to the TOS.

Point 2 : If you intend to use this computer for linux you would be better
supported with intel hardware, intel are the biggest financial supporter of
linux and surprisingly spend more money on linux support than windows. Amd
spends very little money on linux related activities in comparison to their
windows spend. You will get 2D on that R600 based card and maybe 3d by the end
of the year. You won't have problems of restricted screen resolutions.

All routers are linux compatible- All routers are running linux! The router
gives the advantage of only having to register the router and saves you having
to register all subsequent machines. When you move to linux you will have the
benefit of not using software that was made to be incompatible.

Subject: [Peterboro] Hello from Judy a newbie + 2 questions

  Hello everyone,

I am a newbie and within the next two months I plan on buying a new PC (AMD
Phenom64 Quad Core 9550 8.8 GHz). So I thought I would take the opportunity to
(first) use my old (32 bit) computer to try Ubuntu 8.04 (Live) on, with
Open-Office and Gimp

However I would appreciate some help on the following questions please:

1.. Re Setting up Broadband: I read a couple of internet postings dated
2006 from people saying they were experiencing problems setting-up Tiscali
broadband with Linux. From what I gather it may have been a driver issue and
the fact that Tiscali was still refusing to acknowledge Linux. Some people were
saying they overcame the problem by using a Router instead of Tiscali's modem.
Does that problem still exist? If so, can anyone recommend a Linux compatible
Router to be used with ISP Tiscali please?

2.. Hardware / Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD3200 1GB hyper, will it provide
maximum resolution in Linux? Any known problems?

Any other advice will be gratefully received.

Meanwhile I will be copying my MS docs into open-office and back them up,
which will take me a few weeks. So be patent whilst I do my prep work for the
switch-over. Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you

  From Judy
