Respectfully John, I'm not trying to convince the rest of the world to do
things my way. The original poster asked for opinions and that's what he's
getting. It's up to him to decide which way he wants to go.
IMO, if one is going to invest in an automatic camera, and one's not sure if
the user will be interested in learning photography or not, then a P&S is
the way to go. If the user turns out to be not that interested in
photography and more interested in snapshots, then they've got the camera
they want anyway.
OTOH, if they find they do want more control over the camera, then keep the
P&S for snapshots and get something else.
The one thing that probably won't work well is to buy an auto-SLR for
someone that *mostly* wants snapshots. It will be too big of a brick to
carry for what they want to do, in most cases.
