Get him the K-1000! It's nothing to do with what you want; it's
everything to do with teaching youngsters the principles of photography.
If you get him an automatic-this, automatic-that camera, what will he
learn? How to compose an image? And what else?

My son will be in a similar situation soon and I am contemplating getting
him a camera with no light meter in it at all. It's only after learning
what it's all about and exploring the image-making with very basic
equipment that the appreciation is experienced. Before he was allowed to
use an electronic calculator, he had to prove that he could do the sums
in his head, and on paper. He *earned* the calculator. Now, he has
*earned* a PowerBook as well. He is learning (and earning) all the time,
and he's having fun on the way.

Hell, most of us remember our first cameras - whether they were ours, the
school's, or whatever. If I was quick, I would get the Spottie with the
sello-taped film door, if not, I was landed with a Zenit, and boy did
they chew up film sprockets. I eventually saved for a Practica, then a
Fujica 605, and finally the MX. Interestingly, I had an ME Super once,
but found I was using the MX more, so sold it. I'm still fully manual,
and love it.

Not to say I'm a luddite - I am chomping at the bit for a MZ-D (MZ-S
digital) - can't wait. But this is because I know how to calculate
exposure, depth of field, etc, and how to develop and print. I learned
from the very basics, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone with
children starting out in picture-taking.

Only one thing I would change : instead of the K-1000, at least get him a
*decent* manual camera: an MX of course ;-)

Cheers,

Cotty
