My first camera was a $5-10 110 camera that I asked my
parents for. I look back at these photos and think
they look really bad, but they still have their
merits. And the camera helped me appreciate the basic
art of photography.

Later on, I started learning photography at school. At
this stage, I saved up and bought myself a Spotmatic.

I don't really think you need a lot of automation to
start with, just to get a feel for photography. Then
as your son grows up, he can decide whether he wants
photography to be a part of his life. Some people
manage just fine in life without taking a single
photo.
