If you use a 2.4.x kernel you should use the zoran driver from CVS. The
zoran driver 0.9.4 you get from the download area is to old for that.
Or at least there are some problems fixed in the current CVS for the
DC30.
A simpler soultion for that would be if you can use a 2.6.x kernel
because the the DC30 driver is working better. 

VHS isn't the best source. If you have some other source like a TV
signal, that is a much more stable source. I guess DVD is also better
than VHS (VCR).
VCR hav the problem that the timing of the signal is not to stable. That
doesn't matter much for TV but the video decoder unsed on the cards,
they don't like unstable sources. The DC30 should be able to show the
VCR video and record it. For the first tests a more stable video source
is better. 

BTW: What lavrec command do you use ?
