        Wow.   I wonder how the formula in the howto was derived.

        Offhand I'd say that the formula in the howto section is 
        incorrect based on the real world numbers above.

        And I'll have some numbers too in the near future.   I'm running a
        set of encodings varying -N and using a good DV capture from an
        analog source.   So far the pattern I mentioned last night is
        holding up though.
