I am one of the folks who do a lot of work on copyright law for the Marxists Internet Archive. Comments such as "Letters to the Editor", interviews, etc. If you write a letter to an entity (web site, newspaper, media) those comments fall under the publication domain (whatever format it is in). To my knowledge Marxmail is not copyrighted formally but has the post 1988 paradigm that anything published here is Marxmail's. However, the reposting, for example, of John's blog, Oakland Socialist, is still copyrighted by John. But if John makes a comment public by posting here (either on his article or someone else's as part of a, again, public discussion, it really belongs to Marxmail or, it resides in the public domain.
