And that's an interesting story,

I'm not sure what it means that a mailing list owns something. I haven't
considered Marxmail copyright. Maybe we should have a Creative Commons
copyright declaration.

I have some experience with copyright and digital rights having studied the
topic for a few years and had a front-row seat to see how Hollywood movie
studios used it. It's complicated because Intellectual property, in general, is
a set of national laws and international agreements. But I have never asked
permission to quote something that I had read, watched or heard. Just as I
don't believe that a professor of film needs to pay royalties to show a class
clips from a movie for the purposes of instruction or exposition. I think that
is certainly the case if the person quoting or showing clips is not making any
money on it. In US copyright case law, that has traditionally been called "fair
use" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use), and it extends to for-profit
uses as well (e.g., The Daily Show in the US).
I think "fair use" is an important working-class defense against being hounded
in the courts by capitalist who we quote.
thanks, Mark
