Lets be clear, Moderator A uncritically linked to an article that praises the Pope for being against dictators. I respond pointing out how the Pope when he was a bishop wasn't so anti-dictatorial. And then because of the long history of sexual predation, I indicate that referring positively to the words of the church's current CEO involves a degree of denial, of cognitive dissonance, unworthy of a Marxist list.
Moderator A responds to a statement of fact by calling the fact a "trope"-- trope meaning figurative (metaphorical or ironic ) use of a word, at least that's how my concise OED defines it. What and where is the trope in identifying an institution that has practiced and covered up sexual predation for decades? Moderator A then argues that the church's behavior is not uniquely despicable because all such institutions, with the possible exception of the Girl Scouts, have practiced such predation. Well that's a weird way to burnish the church's credentials, but so be it, maybe Moderator A was trained as a Jesuit. Moderator B is betwixt and between, arguing that just because an institution has been a bulwark of reaction for near 2000 years, that doesn't mean the current CEO and his assistants bear any responsibility for that history, or that indeed that history means the institution is structurally reactionary. Moderator B bestows his forgiving spirit on the Democratic Party, not blaming them after all for Tammany Hall. Can't wait for moderators A & B to cite approvingly Schumer's opposition to MAGA. And how about capitalism-- maybe it's not that bad? Maybe capitalism has been troped? And hey, guess what, feudalism was pretty bad, and don't get me started on the Aztecs and human sacrifice. Moderator B then tries to blow smoke up everybody's ass by pointing out how some of his best friends are Catholics, or Pentecostals when that is not here an issue and nobody has said anything about religion as a personal practice. Moderator A claims he's being smeared if anyone claims he is defending the church when he points out that the Catholic Church is just one of many institutions participating in sexual predation. And then he explains, " I meant that the Catholic church is not special when it comes to child sexual abuse. Today in the Portland area, we have a nearby public school system and local community in turmoil over charges of child sexual abuse in the local high school. If sartesian wants to smear me by smearing the Catholic Church, he should be more specific. Here's a clue: indigenous abuse." Where and how hs the Catholic church been SMEARED? Smeared? Clearly Moderator A is doing exactly that, excusing the past actions of the church. Moderator C is going to go Moderators A & B one better and prove that Moderator A did not say what we know he said; did not employ "well, what about..." to bolster his mud fort. In conclusion-- moderator A should fuck off. Moderators B and C have equivocated themselves into irrelevance.
