I see your point, David. I meant that the Catholic church is not special when
it comes to child sexual abuse. Today in the Portland area, we have a nearby
public school system and local community in turmoil over charges of child
sexual abuse in the local high school. If sartesian wants to smear me by
smearing the Catholic Church, he should be more specific. Here's a clue:
indigenous abuse.
But it's a smear to say I was apologizing for the Pope or the Catholic church.
I made several statements and shared some insights about the Catholic church,
the left and right sides of the institution. So, sartesian needs to tell me
what I got wrong.
I gave a little background information that might explain why Francis
reconfigured some US dioceses by replacing clerics, either after they died or
while they were alive, and installing ones who support immigrants without
papers. My statements are evidence-based rather than sartesian's silly
inventory of the crimes of the Catholic Church over two thousand years. As I
said once to Dennis Brasky: Duh!
WHY THIS MATTERS: US churches have historically been allies of immigrant
workers, particularly those without papers, and they have provided real
support. For people who want to engage in the struggle against Trump
deportations, this matters because allies will matter, both to activists in
defense of those without papers and to those workers themselves. I volunteered
for a half-dozen years with a farmworkers and immigrant support group in
Oregon. We would frequently call on churches for meeting places, lodging, and
other types of support. In a struggle against deportations, real allies matter,
and this is unlike a flame war on a discussion list. It is conceivable that we
get to a point where we want to organize to protect churches that sheltered
housed migrants. It all depends on the circumstances. In my post, I observed
some of the current circumstances of the Catholic church and why it might
matter to people who might actually want to do something about Trump
deportations.
