They're a throwback to the Vietnam antiwar marches and the chants of Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh and the display of NLF flags. However, those younger new leftists were a minority among the pacifists, trade unionists, and CP and other Marxist veterans of past struggles who frowned upon and tried to police such sectarian displays. While we supported the NLF, we did so quietly because our primary concern was to recruit the less politically conscious onlookers lining the sidewalks to our ranks. Today’s demonstrators are more alienated from the working class mainstream and more inclined to openly display their identification with the victims and forces abroad who are resisting imperialism through their symbols and chants.
