IMHO this is not an issue of old vs. new users. Continous spell checking can 
be a very useful feature, but it also can get in the way and distract from 
the main task in early phases of text production, as Rainer wrote. Another 
case where it hurts is if you have many special terms which are not in the 
dictionary, and you are quite good at spelling anyway. I'd prefer to keep 
the default off, but if the majority wants it on I would not object.

IMHO we should not fiddle with the setting in prefs2prefs, even if that 
means that the feature will be enabled in cases where it was disabled 
before, since there are many possible pref files which are read (e.g. 
installer/distro generated ones, which may not be in the newest format). 
Therefore it could easily happen that the feature will be switched off even 
for new installs. If you upgrade, it is a good idea to read RELEASE_NOTES 
anyway.
