    I have fully mirrored MikTeX packages (downloaded off one of the
ftp's listed as mirrors) and I always configure MikTeX package manager
to search a local directory with that mirror instead of an ftp server.
This takes a lot of space and also requires manual updating, but it is
the 'other way' I suppose. Am I missing something? If this is the case,
I'd really like to know.
