We try to be conservative and the disc space is not a constraint.
FWIW I would suggest to drop bzip2 and add lzma to the set.

lzma has usually a best compression rate while it is faster to compress and
decompress.

Agreed. But this reauires some newer automake version (I do not remmeber which one).
Note thqt this is not .lzma, but .xz.
