So, I personally think the current design with flags is sufficiently good because it's already noticeable (and we are going to have automatic switch? ;-).

I don't know if we'll have an automatic language switch depending on browser settings.

A compromise might be to emphasize the mechanism for switching language if the user's browser is set to another language than the current. This way, if a japanese user comes to the site he'll more easily see that it is actually available in japanese, but his default will still be english.

Even better, right? Do you think it'd be enough with just the icons?

Yes :) If the number of translations grows, we may have to consider redesigning, but so far I think it's great.

Per request (you?) I've moved the icons to the upper right corner. I'd forgotten that normal users aren't logged in, so it's much more visible to them. I also made the text 'login' smaller, so that it's less intrusive.

I think this apperance is good enough, what do you think?

PS.
BTW, I sometimes notice there appears two arrows on "English" or "Japanese" when the top page is shown.

That's due to some CSS magic, probably to emphasize links to the current page. It's not a problem when the icons are not in the sidebar.
