I fully agree with Matthew and think that bold in math should mean
\mathbf and not \boldsymbol. The change was made because \mathbf
cannot deal with greek letters, as an example, but that is the only
use case for \boldsymbol, IMO. However, \mathbf is still accessible
through Ctrl-Alt-B, so the problem is somewhat alleviated.

I still think that r23608 should be reverted, and maybe Ctrl-Alt-B
should be mapped to \boldsymbol.

Another option would be the following. When the user enters
\mathbf{x\alpha y}, we could output the following latex code:
\mathbf{x\boldsymbol{\alpha}y}.
