Sometimes OOo does build relatively easily, especially on Linux. You were
probably using one of the tagged versions that had been designated as a
release candidate. They are usually pretty easy to build. The development
versions in between are usually much harder to build. You have to guess
what compiler to use, what glibc, what JDK, and sometimes you have to
compile some of the projects with an older compiler. It's a mess.

Yes, the solver is a great way to work. The problem is that there isn't a
solver tree available for each tagged version. You are correct to say that
what we are proposing is in essence to publish solver trees for selected
development versions in order to jump start the developers.

BTW it was Shachar Shemesh who suggested this idea.
