Hi Uri, The problem with public participation in the Hebrew OOo effort is the high cost of maintaining knowledge of how to build OOo. OOo does not build out-of-the-box like Apache or Squid. You have to set up a complex development environment. Just learning how to build OOo takes about six months for a talented programmer. There's just too much that you have to learn in order to do the build - before you start hacking the application itself.
What we are considering offering is a Tinderbox-like server that has the development environment already set up and tested with recent code. TkOS will take care of environment problems and build issues for developers who will commit to making serious contributions (read: according to the work plan set by the MoF and Sun, the sponsors). The code changes for the Hebrew OOo are being merged back into OOo, as anyone who follows the OOo porting and dev lists already knows. This process will probably take another month, but it's not relevant to the development server service that we are thinking of offering. - yba On Sun, 8 Feb 2004, Uri Sharf wrote: > Shachar Shemesh wrote: > > > Jonathan suggested that, as Tk are doing that anyways, Tk will set up a > > system where people from the community can log in (either remotely or > > pay them a visit in Jerusalem), and use their facilities to hack > > OpenOffice.
