Ministry of Communication Rejects
Bezeq's Request to Expand ADSL
Trial
By Efi Landau
The Ministry of Communications has
turned down Bezeq's request to
expand the ADSL trial from five to
ten telephone exchanges. With
Ministry of Communication approval,
the trial will comprise five
exchanges - Raanana, Ramat Aviv,
Ahuza (Haifa), Rehavia (Jerusalem)
and Petah Tikva - and 700-800
participants. The ADSL service will
go by the name of Magic Service,
and the trial is scheduled to start
next month.
The ADSL technology enables the
secure transmission of large
traffic volume of up to 8Mbps on an
ordinary telephone line. It is
possible to make telephone calls
and send a fax simultaneously on
the same line. The technology makes
it possible to keep the existing
ISDN or ordinary line, and upgrade
it by adding ADSL features.
Bezeq plans to offer ADSL
technology to Internet access
providers and content providers,
who will offer customers a range of
content, including interactive
games, video films, music, home
computerizing services, various
software types, remote server
hosting, and any application
requiring large and fixed
bandwidth.
The ADSL technology's edge over
other broadband technologies is the
stability of the bandwidth ensured
to each customer and the level of
information security.
The trial will be held for a few
months, and Bezeq will then start
providing the service for a fixed
monthly charge, with the subscriber
linked to the Internet 24 hours a
day. Participants in the trial will
not pay for Internet access or for
the ADSL modem. Some content
providers, however, will charge a
cheaper fee.
Equipment for the trial and for the
service will be purchased from
Orckit, ECI Telecom, and Alcatel
(through Bynet).

Regarding to the experiment of Bezeq: You can't. But if you still
insist, there are 3 things which can help you:
1. Connections in Bezeq.
2. Good connections in Bezeq.
3. Very good connections in Bezeq.
Of course, assuming you are near one of the 5 mirkazot which join
the experiment (only 10% of Israel's population is near them).
Otherwise, you even don't have a chance to join. Moreover, even if
you THINK that you are near one of them, don't be so sure. For
example, if you are near the excahnge of Raanana, you should know
that there are SOME exchanges in Raanana, and only West Raanana
exchange is part of the experiment (the exchange near Beit
Levinshtein). I, for example, live less than 3 K"m from the Raanana
exchange, but can't join the experiment, because it is not the same
exchange :-(
The same is true for the other experiments. All of them are limited
to very small areas, and even if you are in one of them, you still
need good connections with the provider.
